The sun would have to go nova for this scene to happen, but by the time the sun is ready to do that, it would have already swallowed up the earth as a red giant.

The only other way for this to happen would be a gamma ray burst, but so far there are no GRB capable stars close enough to Earth to pose a threat. So don't start repenting yet guys.

Gamma-ray bursts only happen when stars that are 100-300 times the mass of the sun die, and there aren't any stars like that near us that could cause harm. However, the sun will die in about 5 billion years, and when it does, there won't be any life left on earth. But until then, there's no need to worry.

It is very possible the same thing or something terrible happened to Mars. It most likely had water and life and when the atmosphere and shield had deteriorated far enough, the solar radiation cooked the planet and giving us Mars as it is today. You can clearly see other alien ships leaving the Earth at the same time as the one holding the two kids, and then later, on the new world, other alien ships are leaving just after the kids' ship leaves.

It's not rocket science to assume that other people have also been saved: hundreds, if not thousands, from around the world.

Try noticing things that happen in movies - it really helps you understand them!

I think the movie would have been harder hitting if everyone had died, including the kids, and we'd simply been shown another world where life was slowly evolving anew, not the Adam and Eve, Garden of Eden garbage that we got instead.

It would have sent the message that life is everywhere, one planet dies as another blossoms and that humans are not an essential element in the mix.
