it is so sad how far the british monarchy has been made to stray from its place in british society. that area should be full of clergy in robes. they filled it with guests. it really shows how the monarchy has been marginalized. it seems such a shame. i really believe that the monarchy should have a lot more power.
Paul, I've watched this video countless time and am blessed by the purity, worshipfulness and serenity of this extraordinary piece. The calming to my mind and emotions was desparately needed the day I was told my teenage granddaughter has a brain tumor. Thank you for this powerful music. My best and God bless- Bev
I will be celebratiting nearly 20 years of marriage soon and will renew the vows...I would love to have this song sang at the ceremony. I've never heard a song of this magnitude before! Oh how beautiful the melody and the words of this song...This song compels me to worship my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ...God Bless you for composing such a beautiful masterpiece and thanks for posting.
I would like to add my praise for this music. I am not a royalist nor do I attend Christian mass anymore - but to my ears this music is celestial, exquisite. It makes me glad I watched the royal wedding on TV or I might never have heard such a treasure! So beautiful!
I believe that there are songs in this world that trigger an emotion so deep, so powerfull that they can only be described as godly. Ubi Caritas is the best exampe of one of these "god songs" I have ever had the pleasure of listining to. Paul Mealor, your efforts will go down in the history books... for you have created something more powerfull than motsart or bach could ever dream of. im not going to say good job, not even great job, but instead, PERFECT job. you are a genus my friend.
I've had this bookmarked since the wedding. I bet I've played 1,000 of those 74,000 views up there ^ lol... It's so beautiful and serene. So soothing. As a former soprano in a choir I can appreciate the beauty of this piece. It's ethereal. I am in love with it.
Fantastic piece, I feel like I'm in another universe when I'm listening to this but the constant clack from the middele of the piece is very annoying.
Absolutely Stunning piece of music as someone who has sung as a Cathedral Chorister and sung as Choral Scholar in several Cathedrals; it truly stood head over heels of the "Rutter" composition which was offered, definitely up there with other great choral pieces.
I wouldn't say i am a massive fan of classical music and can stand very few, but this piece was amazing and the best classical song I've heard for a very long time
It's unusual to find a young adolescent like myself who listens to a lot of hip hop and mainstream R&B on a youtube video like this, Paul no award could be great enough for this work of art! :)
@PaulMealor hello Paul - for ease of access I have added your YouTube channel to this video's drop down list.
and can I just say, when i heard Ubi Caritas for the first time on that wedding day broadcast, I thought a little piece of heaven had come loose and drifted for a moment into my television speakers.
@PaulMealor writing from Massachusetts in the USA to say thank you for this piece of heaven. Your writing is simply gorgeous. I sing with a fine choral ensemble here and I am hoping to program your Ubi Caritas in the fall. I can't wait!! THANK YOU!!!!
What an absolutely incredible piece of music. Only a boys choir can produce such a perfect sound. The bass and Tenor parts are incredible. I'm in awe. A standing ovation.
Paul Mealor is my composition lecturer at the university of aberdeen. its so strange hearing people say omg he is awesome and seem to treat him like a celebrity or watever. yes he is incredibly awesome and one of the nicest people ever (even tho he has his moments when u could hit him). just so strange cause to us hes just Paul. lol
@madrasmasala I saw an audio cd of the wedding at Barnes and Nobles for like 20 dollars. That's the only one I've seen but its probably also on Amazon.
Some guy said --> "It's too bad they used autotune, you can totally tell at certain parts." Umm, no. It's called being the best in the world. The autotuner you may be hearing is called their brains.
@henryr16 pauls music isnt a knock off of whitacre! i personally know paul. hes my composition lecturer at uni and he has actually met eric whitacre afew times and has said to his face that some of his music is harmonically incorrect lol as for being fit for a king, if they had wanted whitacre im sure they would have got him but they asked for paul personally and we are all incredibly proud of him :) xx ps soz if i sound bitchy i dont mean to, just very proud of him :)
@JohnBrookMusic Blah blah blah...and Brucker is a knock off of Brahms, who is a knock-off of Bach, because he really loved and emulated Bach in many ways. All composers borrow from each other, it's the name of the game. However, I do agree it does sound like Whitacre, but I love them all!
There are those choirs with professional musicians, who can produce, and maintain, the correct pitches. You may be surprised that there are also some non-paid choirs that can do the same thing.
@henryr16 I've listened to the choir at Westminster Abbey sing Evensong there about a hundred times. They're not using autotune. They're just great musicians... It's their full-time job to be. I'm so jealous of the fantastic choral tradition in the UK, and the fact that it's used as part of the system of worship. Makes the clap hands guitar shlock I have to listen to in church sound even more painful. Beautiful composition by Mealor.
@drmanerd Yes yes. That comment was an attempt at dry humor (given the comments I've seen on videos like this.) I would never suspect a full choir of the travesty that is autotune. But I do agree with you totally on the subject of 'clap hands guitar shlock.' Even organists in places of worship are a dying breed, it seems.
i'm in love with this piece, and would love to explore similar music. my choir has done rutter and whitacre before and loved them. anyone has suggestions on where we can go next?
Every few weeks I come back and listen to this. I bought the sheet music and now I follow along with the score in hand. The changes between 2/2 and 3/2 times signatures are interesting. Four minutes of perfection every time.
It doesn't get any better than this. Truly haunting; the most beautiful piece of music I've ever heard. Makes you feel like you're floating through Heaven over Westminster Abbey in the thirteenth century. I have to get my fix of 3-5 consecutive listens of this every few days. Magical!

@eztobeme the only tiring thing is that no matter which choral group I'm in, we always do some song with lyrics like these. and I don't just mean latin
This song reduces me to tears. im not a religious person, i have no idea in English or latin they are saying. I don't need to know because i feel it...

An example of a high point of human Civilisation - flawed, fragile and vulnerable as it is. There are many others of course. What we see here, in this example, is a culmination of humanity's singular genius and creative spirit over millenia, which is in imminent danger of complete destruction - for reasons we are all aware of, political and environmental.
When i watch this back and the choir hits that first crescendo, i feel i really witnessed something awesomely beautiful that day. Something historical, and how i hope i never forget sat watching it with my parents in my living room.
This video has been reversed. In reality Prince William is on the right, also the Royal Family are sitting on the right. Beautiful music, though, especially the bass at the end. Thank you for posting.
This song is absolutely divine! I am a huge fan of similar composers like Eric Whitacre. While you listen again and again to these heavenly harmonies, here are the lyrics (from Wikipedia):
I love this version of Ubi Caritas! It has a sort of gregorian chant meets Whitacre meets Lauridsen feel with it's main motif combined with the flowy dischordance. I was falling asleep watching the wedding and thought I had died and ascended to heaven. If you like this you should check out the version of Ubi Caritas done by a composer called Mack Willberg in his requiem setting. It is great too!
this song tipped me over the religious scaled from agnostic to theist. rage at me all you want, but for someone who has always doubted the existence of a higher power, this is an example of just how wondrous the human voice can be. truly God given. God Bless the happy couple!
I know what you mean zach343. If you notice, Kate and Williams are seated and camera focuses on the choir but at 2.45 we see them standing before the altar. The fact that the music reaches a climatic point makes the whole thing to be so very moving – their stillness and subservience before the Almighty while they receive their blessing – not from those around them but from above. A great choice by the couple.
I didn't want to detract from Paul Mealor's telling achievement in my earlier comments here, but for those who like this plainchant, listen to Morten Lauridsen, Eric Whitacre, Durufle's take on the Ubi Caritas hymn, as well as Karl Jenkins.
@AntPDC because Durufle was a choral genius - subtle, brilliant, masterly. The other two have only succeeded in cheesing up choral music with big cluster chords. In many cases they have no idea how to write for a voice. Whitacre is better I think, but only a bit
@PatRibsey I wish you would recognize the genius in BOTH Durufle and Mealor. And do you have the score in hand before you criticize the voice leading? I ask because as I follow along each of the parts with my ear, as best I am able, I find four (or eight) beautiful individual lines within this gorgeous piece. I think Mealor is an outstanding composer for voice, not to mention for overall effect. He certainly has the education and experience for it. His success does not preclude love of Durufle.
@PatRibsey I say "four (or eight)" not out of ignorance, but since this brilliant piece is SATB with divisi, so the number of voice parts varies from four to eight-- and possibly in between if there is unison between the same part in both choirs at any point.
If you love his music, send Paul Mealor an email to tell him so! Such a young composer could use all of our thanks and encouragement. His email address is posted publicly at his University of Aberdeen faculty site. To find it, Google: Dr Paul Mealor Aberdeen.
The "Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal" was magical... truly beautiful. You know when there is greatness in music when it makes you pause your thoughts to REALLY listen. The two choirs did it justice in Westminster Abbey... I have not heard anything like this in a long while... William and Catherine chose a lovely piece for their wedding.
This is the best thing I have ever heard of late!... And it really does send shivers down my spine!... The national anthem that was played here was also excellent!
Heard this for the first time at the Royal Wedding and I must say this beautiful piece just entranced me and literally raised goose bumps. I really felt like I was in some very quiet still place. Quite an extraordinary performance. Thank you for sharing with us.
I was a naysayer about the whole thing until this moment... I don't view the wedding cynically anymore, that it's just some ostentatious formality or something. If only everyday of humankind could be like Friday... The entire thing was so beautiful and peaceful and this song pretty much sums up the whole day. A friend of mine told me I was living in a fantasy world for thinking that, but really, what's so bad about that, anyway?
@bauersnarky Totally agree. Simply beautiful. There's no words to describe. I wasn't planning on watching the wedding but when I just so happened upon it, I stayed to watch and when this came up, wow. I was speechless. And tearful. haha
If you love his music, send Paul Mealor an email to tell him so! Such a young composer could use all of our thanks and encouragement. His email address is posted publicly at his University of Aberdeen faculty site. To find it, Google 'Dr Paul Mealor Aberdeen'.
@Kenojuak already did that mate and got a reply the next day. Im a Drum and Bass DJ so this aint really my Fing but after watching the wedding this song sent me somewhere and i just had to find out who did it. Such an epic piece of music.
@SARM71 it's available on iTunes for $0.99 just search royal wedding soundtrack and then convert it to MP3 if you need to. I love this I seriously think it's the most beautiful choir I've ever heard!
I want this version on my MP3 SO bad. Anyone know where it might show up at some point ? Someone needs to get it out there so we can download it. It made me weep !!!! Hauntingly beautiful.
Oh, heavens! That chromatic mediant at 2:12...

This song is absolutely divine! I am a huge fan of similar composers like Eric Whitacre. While you listen again and again to these heavenly harmonies, here are the lyrics (from Wikipedia):

I hope the iTunes version doesn't have that photographer clicking away.
This was the highlight of the entire day for me - utter perfection.

Absolutely stunning and uplifting! The dissonance in the mystical sounding chords worked so well in Westminster Abbey that it gave me goose bumps.

AntPDC 10 months ago
@AntPDC AH! Don't group Whitacre and Lauridsen with Durufle! *shudder*
PatRibsey 10 months ago
@PatRibsey Why not?
AntPDC 10 months ago
@AntPDC because Durufle was a choral genius - subtle, brilliant, masterly. The other two have only succeeded in cheesing up choral music with big cluster chords. In many cases they have no idea how to write for a voice. Whitacre is better I think, but only a bit
PatRibsey 10 months ago
@PatRibsey I wish you would recognize the genius in BOTH Durufle and Mealor. And do you have the score in hand before you criticize the voice leading? I ask because as I follow along each of the parts with my ear, as best I am able, I find four (or eight) beautiful individual lines within this gorgeous piece. I think Mealor is an outstanding composer for voice, not to mention for overall effect. He certainly has the education and experience for it. His success does not preclude love of Durufle.
Kenojuak 10 months ago
@PatRibsey I say "four (or eight)" not out of ignorance, but since this brilliant piece is SATB with divisi, so the number of voice parts varies from four to eight-- and possibly in between if there is unison between the same part in both choirs at any point.

So gorgeous! This piece took my breath away as I was watching the ceremony. I was so moved by it. Except, the image here is inverted. :)

I was a naysayer about the whole thing until this moment... I don't view the wedding cynically anymore, that it's just some ostentatious formality or something. If only everyday of humankind could be like Friday... The entire thing was so beautiful and peaceful and this song pretty much sums up the whole day. A friend of mine told me I was living in a fantasy world for thinking that, but really, what's so bad about that, anyway?
bauersnarky 10 months ago 44
@bauersnarky Totally agree. Simply beautiful. There's no words to describe. I wasn't planning on watching the wedding but when I just so happened upon it, I stayed to watch and when this came up, wow. I was speechless. And tearful. haha
