Ennio Morricone, a legendary composer and Yo-Yo Ma, a virtuoso cellist. Every time I hear Morricone's music or Yo-Yo Ma's playing, I get chills. They are truly the best and together make a perfect team.
The only composers that could get me at this level of emotion (0:02-3:27) were Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams and Elmer Bernstein. And of course, Ennio Morricone.
@lonnegan4 Sure Bernard Herrmann was an outstanding and brilliant composer. But I still hadn't heard him create a piece of music that has the same sorrowful and enchanting melody as Deborah's Theme.
hm..maybe you're right, herrmanns music is dark and therefore a perfect match for pictures like psycho or vertigo.
but when it comes to a simpe and beautiful melody, morricones work is unparalleled. right now, another composers name comes to my mind - thomas newman. have a look at his compositions for "shawshank redemption" or "american beauty" - they are breathtaking.
What comes to my mind when it comes to simple and really hauntingly beautiful melodies were Elmer Bernstein's "To Kill A Mockingbird" & "Far From Heaven"; Jerry Goldsmith's "The Sand Pebbles" & "A Patch of Blue"; and John Williams' "Schindler's List". Not so bombastic and grand, but simple, haunting and ethereal in it's beauty. Just like Deborah's Theme.
a great list. when I hear perlmans violin solo from schindlers list, I can't even move. to kill a mockingbird is the only album I don't know (yet). I think it's the quiet moments when the real talent of a composer shows. thats why I admire morricone so much - "cinema paradiso", "the mission" or "the untouchables" - thats pure genius. another one of my favourites: goldsmith's "chinatown"
@lonnegan4 Chinatown was also one of my favorites. At the the hands of a master, a trumpet and the piano can be very haunting. I also like Morricone's music from "Malena".
@lonnegan4 Btw, I also forgot to add John Williams' "Memoirs of a Geisha", especially "Sayuri's theme" to the list, which incidentally also had the involvement of Itzhak Perlman as well as Yo Yo Ma.
the main theme from malena is beautiful! thats a great thing about this cd - it contains some of morricones finest pieces, rearranged for chello by the maestro himself. also some of the less well known pieces, like "Dinner" and "Nocturne" (I put them on youtube, too)
another cooperation between williams and yo yo ma: 7 years in tibet - some passages move me to tears every time I hear them.
@lonnegan4 Oh definitely. Though I read and heard some rumour that John copied some passages from Randy Edelman's score to "Dragonheart" and placed it in his score to "Seven Years In Tibet". How true that rumour was I've never confirmed.
a bernstein album that really deserves to be mentioned here: the age of innocence. the music + scorsese's picture...one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen in the theatre. just bought the cd yesterday :-)
Its underrated because its a mess. Visually spectacular with an amazing score, but its too long and nobody knows what the second half is about because its been edited to death.
I saw this movie for the first time last week and i fell in love with the music the actors just everything about this movie was amazing i just wish it would have been appreciated more especially Ennio Morricone's music....its just sad how people arent reccognized for real talent anymore
Sergio Leone was under-appreciated for both "Once Upon a Time in the West" and "Once Upon a Time in America" (both criticized by US audiences and critics upon their first release). Now both are considered unraveled cinema classics. Both are graced by Morricone's scores.
The American (i.e. "butchered") release of the movie stacked the cards against its being rightly acclaimed as a masterpiece. I viewed the complete version for the first time only a month ago. I'm hooked! The dialogue, acting, locales and music are a masterful blend. Leone said of it, "It's not a realistic film, not historical...It's a fable. I force myself to make fables for adults." Well said and well done!
BRILLIANT RENDERING of Morricone's gem - I can feel the emotion of the artist here clearly. A difficult and challenging undertaking, well done, Maestro!
Ennio Morricone... what a genius. I hate him intensely for making me feel so much when listening to this song. But I will be eternally grateful to him for allowing me to discover emotions I thought I buried deep under the sands of time in my heart. Thank you Ennio.
Wow, i couldn't say it better but it's the same with me. Ennio Morricone is the greatest composers of all times, he doesn't makes music, but "feelings". Every piece bring me feelings to my heart.

Once upon a time in America is so under rated and doesnt get the attention it deserves and the crap gangster films like Scarface do.

I couldn't agree more

I disagree... Scarface was better than Once Upon a Time In America, but I do agree that it is underrated.
lampmaster3000 1 year ago
@lampmaster3000
on the other hand, you can't really compare the two pictures, they're totally different.
the comparison between once upon... and the godfather would be much easier, they are both very romantic and have the same rhytm.
lonnegan4 1 year ago
@lonnegan4
sadly, only the 1st godfather is romantic and special. the other two are amazing as well, but they didnt have that same feeling anymore.
lampmaster3000 1 year ago
@lampmaster3000
that's true. but it was almost impossible for coppola to keep the level - godfather 1 is nothing less than a perfect picture.

I did an electric version of it, and played it live to Elizabeth McGovern, who impersonated Deborah in the movie.
Your version is very moving, delicate, expressive, Im sure it'd impress maestro Morricone himself.
Well done :0)
