I agree that this is a beautiful piece with or without backing. An interesting note, this is the only one you don't count off on, and I think I learned it with the "one" shifted from where it is supposed to be (I supposed the first note was on the "upbeat 1"). Still, I think it smokes this way.
The background is available on the CD with the play-along book. However, I think that the pieces sound nice even without the backgrounds. The backgrounds need to be internal...you need to hear the chords in your head while you play the piece. If it's just sounding like a "load of notes" to you, it means that you're probably not yet hearing the details of the chords implied by the streams of notes. Please check out my site for more info on this concept.
Counterpoint is what's making playing solo on a saxophone very intriguing, just like Parker did (and Bach also ;-). Melody+Rhythm+Harmony are being heard very clearly! NICE!

Hey Greg, would you recommend your books to anyone really studying these sax lines? I'm a guitarist and I'm really looking to snag that sax phrasing, but I haven't found a good resource yet.
I've bought everything I can find with your name on it. Your instructional materials are top-notch. I never thought about trying to find you on You Tube!
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you're enjoying my books. You can find me on Facebook. I'm now teaching skype video lessons. Let me know if you'd like to take a sax lesson sometime.
Oh sorry, I forgot to add: I hope you'll continue making great books! I especially enjoy the Jazz Saxophone Duets which I play with my brother (I play alto, he tenor), and so I'm greatly impressed with the fact that you have included all three combinations (alto-alto, tenor-tenor, alto-tenor)in your book! I hope you'll come up with a second volume of the Jazz Saxophone Duets soon!
Greg - you ARE the man! Really been digging volume two so far and what a nice surprise to find you on You Tube. I've almost got Wacker Drive licked, but I'm a long way off staking a claim on LaSalle St.
