@MrEdjedj Hey there. I bought a 2HP 3 phase motor second hand...cost me a couple hundred bucks and hadn't had much use. 3 phase motors are often sold second hand, and can be easier to get than single phase. Note that I use a variable speed controller to convert my single phase power to 3 phase to run the motor. Happy hunting!
@JaiacosM The small pulleys were a real problem for me to get here in New Zealand. In the end, I asked my machinist nephew to buy a round rod of aluminium and machine it for me to the size I needed.
@SpitBucket17X Variable means I can accurately control my grinding...for smaller work with a fine belt I can drop the speed right back and control what I'm doing. Otherwise I run it flat out! Thanks for looking.
@carolinadare lol...the truth is, I have used this grinder for so many things I wouldn't have thought of...but I it was a whole lot of fun building it!
thinking about getting back into Knife making and I'm interested in 1 of those variable speed controllers you use, reminds me of the way a rheostat controls light levels. I'm interested in it for a flat grinder, will you give Details please?
what are you using for a the speed control? Very set set up from the looks of it. Sorry if this question has been asked already but my youtube connection is buggy right now and I can;t see comments from others at the moment.
Hi. Speed control is KBAC-27D by KB Electronics. This has been great, but I didn't have it to begin with, just a fixed pulley. Thanks for your question.
Where did you get the wheels? I want to build a 2x72 and have a 1 hp motor but I need wheels. Thanks for your help, you did a nice job on that grinder.
I had my nephew turn (with lathe) the drive and idler wheels. Try sunray wheels...I haven't bought from them, but they have a wide range. Thanks for your comments.
try searching on uk google for 'modular adjustable grinders ' or 'dlcprecision.' There's grinders to be found, it took me a year to find what i wanted though...
If you were in the UK, I'd pay a fortune for that. Fantastic example. Your configuration, to me looks perfect. I especially like the speeds and the big contact wheel :-)
I hope you're getting lots of use from it. I'm green with envy.
Great, you've find a lot of uses for it...I've used this for more than knife grinding...I shaped chopping boards, made a couple of pine stirring spoons, plus untold miscellaneous jobs.
Fantastic! I had tons of fun building mine - there is a deep satisfaction in making something for yourself. I started with a 1.5hp (1.1kw) motor, but moved to a 2hp motor (1.5kw). The higher the hp the better (to a point - very little point in going beyond say 3hp). The 2hp motor is 3phase, controlled by a KBAC-27D variable speed controller. Thanks for looking.
This is a home built grinder, based on photos I found on the net. Some additional machining was required and my father and I assembled it. Altogether, it is very smooth and a pleasure to use.
great... i d see all yours videos.. and.. i m going to made this grinder.. congratulations.. so.. see my videos.. ..thanks.. from buenos aires , argentina
Thanks for posting all these videos! I am thinking about getting into knife making. What is the difference between a smooth wheel like yours and a rubber coated one? Thanks
Actually, a rubber coated wheel is much better! I did attach strip of rubber, but upon the first start it unpeeled, snapped into multiple pieces, and nearly made my heart stop! The rubber will absorb some vibration, and prolong belt life.
Knife making is a very satisfying hobby, and can be as simple or complex as you like. Start your first knife with what ever tools you have, and go from there. Good luck!
What motor do you use with it? I live in Australia and am having a hard time finding a suitable motor.

Did you cast the small pulleys like the contact wheel? or did you buy it?

Very nice grinder gents, one to be proud of. Looks like it's based on the unigrinder, I plan on making one similar to that one too.
