The only third-world country I've been to is Mexico and for job travel only. While there I've seen some pretty harsh poverty such as people living in plywood shelters and other horrible living conditions. I asked several people there why conditions are like this in Mexico and the response was always "Government corruption". One lady said most of the money that should be in the economy was in Swiss bank accounts. Americans are relatively rich only because our government isn't oppressing us!

I have to debate were vs. was only because the "world" is singular and not plural. If the worlds were going to end than it would be correct, however, I need to debate you on one world and was. I'm sorry and I'm sure you're correct. Can you please explain?

When we say "world" in this context, the plurality is implied by the conclusion of the sentence, "If the world were going to end in 7 days, what would you do?" As the "you" is singular, and part of the whole, "world," it thus makes "world" plural. I hope that makes sense. It IS confusing, and one could argue "was" could be correct in another context.

If I may, let me say that singular/plural makes no difference here. It would be "were" either way, as a verb tense that suggests a theoretical situation. To say "If the world was going to end," you would be implying that at some point in the past, the world really WAS going to end.

A clearer example is the old lyric "If I were a rich man." If I WAS a rich man, I truly once was and no longer am, while the peasant in "Fiddler on the Roof" was considering the possibilities of BEING a rich man.
