your air filter was probably dirty as fuck. not to mention you would have to do like 10 of non helpful things and 10 of helpful things and average them out to be more accurate
Sorry, your last test with the K&N filter is not accurate due to the fact that you drove 174 miles further than your previous trip. Remember, the less fuel you have in your tank, the better weight savings you'll have which would provide you with better mileage. One gallon of gasoline is roughly equaled to 8.66 pounds.
Great video, thanks. Did you know that here in the UK, a car's fuel economy is calculated in miles per gallon, but at the pump the fuel is sold in litres? It used to be sold in gallons, but several years ago, when the price started to skyrocket, they changed it to litres to give the illusion that you were getting more for your money.
Get away from 87 octane gas. Check your owners manual (a few engines recommend only 87 octane) but if put in 89 octane or better, you'll not only FEEL the difference in performance, it also makes a surprising impact on fuel milage. 10 cents/gal makes a $2 difference on a 20 gal fill up, but if your getting another 50 miles or more down the road on a fill up, it's a well spent $2. You'll also see the difference when change the oil... it will not be as dark (black) after running only 89 oct.
you should not use any additives in the fuel when making comparison testing unless you are testing those additives . Them alone may affect your readings
if you try techtron chevon in your tank and you slam the accelarator down untill you max it out,do this a couple of time and you will get what ever mpg your van is suppose to get .i have a 1994 mpv mazda v6 with 170,000 and i did this and im suppose to get 20mpg on the highway and im getting 22
Lastly, if you have a Fuel Filter it may be worth replacing(get a non-made in China part if possible)...
...and the best Fuel System Cleaners(FSC) out on the market are those that contain PEA. It's not solvent based, but rather a potent detergent/dispersant. Red Line's SI-1, Amsoil's Pi, and Chevron Techron(SP?) all contain a good amount of PEA.
Find out when the spark plugs were changed last, but unless one is misfiring, usually fuel economy won't change just by replacing plugs alone.
Also, this particle oil isn't designed for extended service, but is generally good for 7,000-8,000 mile intervals. The only way to know if the oil holds up from '9 months - 1 year' as you say you typically do, would be to have a Used Oil Analysis performed. It could very easily have sheared out of grade or had base stock depletion(the ability to neutralize the corrosive acids, thus the oil is shot and wear begins to spike).
Air filters can restrict to a point before they affect MPG. The government put out information about this. The only part where improved air-flow happens is at WOT, where fuel efficiency is the worst. The butterfly at the throttle body is more restrictive than any non-capacity reached(full of particles) air filter. A K&N also allows in more dirt entry on a lot of applications.
As for the oil choice, a good choice! Stay within grade but the lower starting oil viscosity will help. Check PCV valve!
If your tires are bigger than stock, then you are actually getting more mpg than what your calculations are. Your speedometer will be slower and therefore giving you less miles on your odometer than what the actual distance you are traveling.
Try replacing all other fluids in the van, the transmission and the power steering. the trans fluid is self explanatory, but the power steering fluid really isn't. when you have a high drag in the power steering the engine has to work harder to turn the pump, better fluid equals less power to turn, also look into getting under-drive pulleys for your accessories, hard to find but makes a world of difference. everything turns easier and you get more power again equals better mpg's
A removed, stuck-open or lower than spec. thermostat can cause a massive loss in fuel economy, at 0:38 the coolant gauge looked slightly low, but I'm unsure if the vehicle had reached full operating temperature
Clean the mass air flow sensor with one of those spray CRC cans (take the sensor out & spray all sides). That helped me a lot. But I have a standard. Cause cleaning the MAFS really only gives a more responsive engine (lets me shift at lower rpms). idk how much it will help in an auto. Also def. check your tire pressure. sux u get 14mpg, but glad you got good results.
Try this idea on your next test..." Wheel Alignment " (Approx. Cost $30 & higher) I'f out of alignment resistance/drag increases where the tires make contact to the pavement which decreases fuel economy, and also something as simple as increasing tire inflation to it's maximum pressure (Cost $0) can increase the tires ability to roll easier with less drag. Also try looking into hydrogen fuel cells fairly easy to make and should see fuel gains of at least 10% or better! NON SUPPORTER OF BIG OIL
another way if slightly increasing fuel economy is a muffler, like a cherrybomb or a magnaflow, or a knock off cheapie muffler. Better breathing= better effiecency!
I bet if you replace the O2 it would improve even more. O2's become "Lazy" as they age, the bad part is your car won't throw a light till its completely dead.
You shoulda got an Aerostar because the aerostar isnt a Rapist/murdurest van, its just a van for redneck families and old people! Ha! Nice van anyway!
@JohnFromSpace Yeah, over here in Goergia, they are mexican family or constructor vans. But I think I waould have the Aerostar, cause it would be esier to prove that you arent smuggling anything, but well, animals in it rather than murdering! Cause, Id watch out showing off guns in a murderer van! Oh yeah, and I know now why they are also rapist vans, Tehy have beds in them!
you should watch KipKays fuel economy vid he boosted it up by around 15mpg with his tips. I dont remember the exact number but he added some liquid in that makes your gas burn better and makes the engine more efficient
Thanks man, there is no supercharger installation video down the pipeline for this one! My version of 500 horspower for this thing is getting 500 miles out of every tank =P
EPA rates my RSX at 24/30 but I average 34 or 35 and I know I get 40mpg highway (one loooong trip, all highway). I drive 60 though as the difference between 60 and 65 is 3mpg so I take the slightly longer trip (7 minutes over 100 miles) to save some money. Good tips you got here!
Speed is definately the biggest factor! You have the same mentality as I do man. I thought I was the only one who still drives 60-65.
In a small car like yours 60-65 is a 3mpg improvement. In a bigger vehicle with a V8 it'll be an even larger gap and going 70+ in a big V8 truck and your probably looking at 10-12 MPG VS 17-20 going 60-65.
The other small things add up to like properly inflated tires and keeping the injectors clean with a good Fuel injector cleaner.
Yeah in my Corvette I've pulled off 33 Miles per Gallon. With a Big V8 I can shift it at 1200 RPM without bogging the motor. If you go 65 MPH its at 1400 RPM in 6th. 60 MPH and its at 1100 in 6th gear. It's never recommended to let the tach drop below 1000.
If you have a manual you can definately make a game out of it trying to beat your previous FE numbers. I do!
It's pretty hard to do in a truck with no tachometer, a floaty fuel gauge and a 350v8.
I have to do it by sheer sound, but yeah it definitely enables you to get awesome mileage, driving like an old man. 7miles to the gallon on a good day, 10-12 when i'm trying my hardest to conserve.
Hah, my dad had a V6 firebird and he went through all the gears before he hit 65mph. On a good day he could get almost 55mpg out of that thing. :D
I have a "Advance" Tips video in the works. I think people will be surprised how extreme the hypermiler subculture can be.
With todays faltering economy getting 10 Miles per gallon more then the EPA estimate on your car is the new equivalent to getting 200 extra horsepower out of your car =P

the injector cleaners alter the mpg
the oil change did the diference
the real results come 1 tank after doing 2 or 3 tanks with the injector cleaner runs
but well... i am european... its a bit pointless to do this in a 5.0 V8 lol

I've seen the same results from just changing where I fill up. Some gas stations actually "water down" their gas to pad their profit margin.
