Excellent! Nice to see Phill Collen out of his comfort zone and do something different. His endless smile throughout the song looked like he was almost apologetic for playing the blues or that he was sharing the stage with a true blues technician. But whatever it is that caused him to blush he sure proved his worth. I am sure that, like most guitarists, Collen has been playing the blues with his guitar. Thanks that was refreshing.
Its about exposure with these guys the more people see & hear Sayce & other one like joe, gales & them the more it will open people up to this music. Its a new world & a different vibe than the old days now. Ive seen Sayce do thangs i never seen Stevie do or jimi that makes him stand out. What more can these guys do to the blues to revolutionize it? turn to computer effects? You could but it would change the blues feel for ever. All you can do is just play your ass off & hopefully people dig it.
Hendrix laid it down so good that its so hard to be topped. SRV was great to but he just kind of took from jimi and albert king..all the old blues men and carried the torch. if your a guitar player than you know dam well that its not easy to just bust out a new thang that just takes over the world of blues. Sayce is just carrying the torch and thats fine with me cause hes prety freaking awesome!
Its not fair to compare players, everybody has their own way to speak. Philip Sayce is a blues-MONSTER, he would have played anyone off the stage, when it comes to blues...... Phil aint playin bad either, but this is Sayces arena.
@KayserStaffay Yeah, this is definitely Sayce's forte. I'm not saying Collen is crap. Just on this occasion Sayce blew him away. He is indeed a blues monster. We were luck enough to support him in Sheffield and he was epic. A nice guy too!!
Joe speaks with a different voice, I love him as well. But he's a much more controlled player. Philip has this outrageous output on stage that I sometimes miss with Bonamassa. He tends to play nearly exactly the same as on the records live. Record-wise, I must say that I prefer Joe though. Philips output isn't that great on record. But as I said - its not fair to compare musicians, its about personal taste.
Joe is more controlled these days - Was a different story 10 years ago though. There's plenty of early JB stuff around to check, but he made a conscious decsion to slow down from the million mph stuff and be more selective. Checkout the jams with Walter Trout !
I want to like Phillip, but there tends to be a franticness to his playing that is annoying. I think it's great and appropriate on the Hendrix-style tunes like "One Foot in the Grave", but on the slow blues tunes less is more. That's why greats like Albert King, BB, Freddie King, & SRV are remembered because they hit you with tasty, well-placed notes letting the music BREATH. It wasn't mark, get set, SOLO, make the "I'm feeling the Blues" face, wheedly, wheedley, wheedly! It was real.
Yeah who cares if he's not any of the kings or srv. Those kinds already established what they did. Phillip plays the blues but is a very true player and plays what he feels. music is an art not a contest.Trying to copy other players is cool if thats what you like.
hey man i´m sorry to disagree with you, but theres a sort of a crisis right now in the music world and that´s because musicians and players are not trying find their own voice, for example in the blues the last huge thing that happened was SRV and it´s been like 20 years or more that nothing new comes out... that´s a crisis to me... every art form is doomed if we lose the sense of originality....
SRV wasent doing anythang new but just playing the hell out of the blues in a time that wasent big on the blues so with him coming into the picture was just what people needed. He sounded a lot like Jimi thats why most people liked him. Joe Bonamassa, Sayce, Lance Lopez, Gales theres a lot...are keeping thangs alive just fine. Sooner or later someone will bust out im sure but it wont be the end if someone doesnt. So just imagine life with out these guys then ya were hurt'n. Thats my opinion.
Can't disagree more with that, I think Philip (Sayce we
're talking about here, not Phil Collen) really plays with taste and restraint when it's called for, but can let it rip when necessary too. Check out Alchemy if you want to hear and see true tasteful, well-placed notes. Almost nothing compares to that, and in the catalog of musical greatness, it's up there with Lenny, Little Wing, Riviera Paradise, and Tin Pan Alley
Your right YJMSRV))))))) Alchemy is freaking sweet. I think most of these guys talking bout Philip either havent listened to him enough or never seen him play live before. Ive seen some pretty amazing players over the years & philip is the best ive seen period! IMO...that is. I live in cali orange county & ive been enjoying Sayce for about 6 years now. He use to play a little bar called the brass elephant every thursday night & he would just jam out for 3 to 4 hours ...he can play it all!!!
The blues is musical truth serum. Phil had a pretty good tone going, but had he concentrated more on the feel and not the flash, he would have had a better showing. But like everyone else, it's just my opinion. Either way, they're both great players.
Blues, what is the blues? Who's to say Phil Collen is'nt made to play Blue. Just cos he does'nt play a Strat running through a Bassman with a Hotcake pedal .......
Philip is the MAN! Poor Phil Collen, way out of his element here. His tone is sh*t too. I love the way Philip confidently waits his turn and hosts it like a real blues jam leader, then just let's loose with the real deal chops! You can tell Phil Collen doesn't jam much or improvise, he ends every phrase with a neck slide, because, you know, what else would you do! Philip Sayce actually plays very understated here and even let's Phil step all over the song.
ahh...I wish I saw Richie Sambora jam with Philip Sayce...that would kick some butt...definitely. Phil Collen is a great player, but he is just not made for the Blues.
take the show , Phil Collen is great , I grew up listening to his playing , has a title in his own right
but he's trying to show up Phil Sayce with bues , not Phil Collins specialty in my mind , get phil sayce on stage with Def Lepperd and he wouldnt be in his element either
Amazing...

All it took was 12 bars for Sayce to make Collen look like he didn't belong on the stage. Shows you how good Philip really is.

never heard of this Sayce guy but he seems like a real dick throwing that shit at Phil from left field
