  • Written by Mike Nesmith of Monkees fame.

  • What a BEAUTIFUL WOMAN!!!!!

  • Very interesting. No mixing, no electric guitars, no shoes. LOL. She still kicked ass. Nice video. Thanks.

  • HAHAHA the "Too Stoned Ponies" comment is the funniest thing I have ever seen.

  • I love the way you managed to graft the beginning of the record over the the part of the live performance that was spoiled by that voice-over - thank you.

  • Count me as one of the millions in love with Linda Ronstadt.

  • @Tuscanson same here.phwooar!.

  • Did not know how she looked like when I was very young when I heard this song, and off course- she is an angel..her eyes- so warm, fell in love with her....okay- I must wake up again ;)

  • love the shoes. perfect fora real life story

  • Way more sexier and way more genuine than Kim Kardasian or Lady Gaga.

  • In the band's defense, their playing IS artistic and interesting, just a little funny at times. They remind me of other bands of the day.

  • What a classic performance of the Stone Ponies - I can't imagine what it would have been like to be at that club that day. I would have flipped at her singing and the band obviously didn't really do much but her singing is great. They need a new stagecoach but the same driver, Linda. Wonder when Andrew Gold would show up. Great music, thanks for the retro music.

  • Axe Excite!!

  • God Damn the Stone Ponies are fucking SHIT!!!!

  • Linda stood out in spite of the Stone Ponies

....always has, even with the Eagles

  • so who's listening to the music...I mean, really...

  • This song should be called DIFFERENT DRUMMER, because that's what they need here.

  • @Mooshpups lol

  • who in the world can dislike this. i do not want to know you people

  • LINDA WOULD HAVE MADE A GREAT GIRLFRIEND - HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE THAT FACE EVERYDAY

  • the Too Stoned Ponies

  • Thank you!

  • Hey, she was probably sick of the same old version and welcomed a different take on the song. This is how music and performance work. Look at the interpretations Van Morrison gives to live takes of his stuff. Those who are dissing this performance would likely consider Micheal Nesmith's recording an abomination and it's his song! The Hoffs/Sweet version is good too. I like 'em all. There's a lot to dig if you let yourself.

  • Lousy band, very lousy indeed !! this band killed my favorite song. Poor Linda had to put up with them. how come ??

  • @pervertotty Have to agree, the band is unsympathetic and plays against her. As though they're doing they're best to upstage her and take the lead.

  • The drummer took the song title literally. A different beat every line.

  • @bgumbyguitar Bravo -- LMFAO. Absolutely great call -- ironic AND spot on!

  • GOD DAMN she was so HOT!!!! I bet she had a black bush that would knock your socks off!

  • Worst band in history. The band were actually shitting on Linda Ronstadt's talent. Bunch of losers.

  • Fuck, this band is AWFUL. How did poor Linda get hooked up with these losers?

  • I will take this live casual venue with a real singing artist over today's over the top, one beat, lip synced, tattooted, talentless, narcissisitcal, nobodies any day!

  • @mharris187 you forgot autotuned..

  • Cool. I was getting off to the beauty of it when the idiot that posted it decided to shit on it a few seconds into it!

  • Seen her twice in concert, 02 and 09. Very talented but I'm tired of her political speaches on stage, that's not why I went to see her. Next time I will just down load it.

  • Linda looks nothing today like this video. More like Fat Elvis 1977 before he died

  • @k3304 well, this must have been 40 years ago - noone would expect her to look the same I think!?!? Still a wonderful voice!

  • Remember dreaming and hoping that one day I could spend the night or weelend with Linda and Bev Bivens from "We Five" What a summer that was, I'll tell you.

And I did hear her do this in Squaw Valley sometime in 1969 with just the acoustic guitar.

Small venue, but it was jammed to the rafters.

  • Sounds like a demo record. She could do this acoustic and still be fantastic. no band needed:)

  • I like the original better, too -- it was a little faster, I liked that driving rhythm it had. It was a hit when I was in high school & I really loved it.

While this version doesn't do it for me musically, it's great to see Linda Ronstadt singing at such close quarters.

I read on another post of the same version (it must be a TV performance) that this GREAT song was written by Mike Nesmith of the Monkeys. Sung by a woman, it becomes, as it did, a battle cry or an anthem for feminism.

  • Boy, do I remember this, I sent it to my girl friend in order to break up....

  • Absolutely brilliant vocal performance and WOW was she hot!

  • She sounds great but the band sounds like Herman's Hermits playing "Mrs. Brown you've got a lovely daughter".

  • I love this kind of songs....

    easy listening............

    smoooooooooooooooottthhhhh.....

  • The band played like they were the STONED PONIES!

  • she used to go barefootin a lot back then. also wore dresses with the sleeves longer than the dress. Used to have a pic from rolling stone of her in a red teddy hangin in my locker at school lol. But I liked her singing even more. had all her albums

  • It looks like she is barefoot. man, that is one sexy woman! She could have asked anything of any man, and he would bend over backwards, or break his back, to give it to her! One gorgeous woman. And what a voice! Like an angel singing!

  • Young Linda Ronstadt is just too beautiful for words, just like her voice.

  • Holy crap! Linda is so young here.

  • it's not that bad of a recording

  • fantastic singing ........ back up band ??? omg spew

  • The first time I ever heard Linda and didn't know who she was.? She quicly became the very best female singer of all time and a the most gorgeous female in the world on and off the stage with great personality and brains.

  • Fire the drummer.

  • @rbcastillo Fer sure. And I'd be glad to light the fire, too.

  • Linda loved to perform barefoot, and it just seemed to make her mo' betta.

  • tell to ur criminals friend always felt fear because they are criminal alien ,the more criminal cross the border the more democrpas vote even illegal, democrats party mean party of pervert crooks lier criminals just like their peoples

  • this is her sexiest video ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • what the f*ck were they playing...?

  • @supercarXXX It's called MUSIC you should try it some day.

  • Where were you when you heard this tune for the first time? LInda emerging out onto the early country rock scene in LA. Despite a so so musical backdrop, Linda's beautiful voice soars in this oldie...revealing just a taste of great things to come. She sang this one like an angel...and was she beautiful then,or what?

  • @bugeyes455858 -- She does more than just sing like an angel. She actually breaks your heart. Perfect match of song and singer.

  • Saw her live at a little club called The Bistro in Columbus, Ohio in about 1967. I was in college at Ohio University and working as an announcer at a TV stations that was across the street. I was on dinner break. Had never heard of her. She was fantastic, beautiful and very sexy.

  • wow...she is amazing. her beauty is unmatched, especially compared to all these fake hoes out there.

  • @bastrop78418 was unmatched

  • I know there must be a God, this creation is proof enough!

Ill bet she broke alot of hearts , with just one look! thats all it took was just one look! Ha!

  • I saw her first performance on American Bandstand or one of those shows. We were knocked out by her voice and wondered who she was. She was singing this song too.

  • I have her albums on reel to reel tape. She's a natural beauty. You're right about the live video's, the band sounds horrible.

  • Doesn't seem possible she was going with Governor Jerry Brown of California. He's still know as Govenor Moon Bean to those that knew him back when.

  • love the song but unfortunately, Ronstadt is another one of the drugged up hippies of the 60's that thinks she emerged as an intellectual...if she'd just keep her mouth shut and sing, she'd be much more endearing to many of us....

  • classic era piece.

  • Let's hear one of these singers of today try doing this song live; such clarity, such a perfect tempo, and, well, to all you people who can sing, just try to give it a go.

Then you can appreciate just how difficult, and how well Linda sings this. Even Mike Nesmith was surprised by Lindas' change of some words and by the "fit" she put to it.

Thank you so much for your hard work!

    Joseph F

  • I love this clip. Look at her at about 32 and 1:22. She isn't just singing, she is really having a good time too. For so many singers it is just a job. Here is a woman enjoying her art. And reall art it is, she is so talented.

  • worst band i've heard yet

  • god..shes beutiful.

  • beuitful song

  • love this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Susanna Hoffs sounds like Minnie mouse singing LOL

  • Where is Beat Club when you really need it? Linda is so held back by those so-called musicians...

  • Susanna Hoffs' version is better than this one but Linda's album version is still the best

  • Must be a copyright problem. There's not a decent recording of "Different Drum" in all of YouTube. I believe there IS a good version of "Long, Long Time," in here, somewhere.

  • torrents

  • Search on "The Stone Poneys - Different Drum (1967)" MUCH, MUCH better version.

  • Susanna Who ??

  • UGGHH!!. Sorry, but I finished watching Susanna Hoffs' version.

  • you make eyes at me?.

  • what about the line "you makes eyes at me"

  • "You make eyes at me", have you never heard this before?

Maybe I am dating myself, but we used to say this when someone was trying to show interest (sexual) in someone else (that is, flirting strongly). Or we used to say, He/She was making googly eyes at me. Is this the clarification you're asking for?

  • Wow, just like the record!

  • she look like the girl from the happinig.......

  • Hey where is the fabulous original version that use to be here,on a spinning 45? i really miss it :(

  • Probably taken off due to copyright infringement unfortunately.

  • Stone Ponies? They must have replaced the band members before recording the hit song or left their sheet music at home.

Band is horrible yet her recorded version was terrific I still have the 45rpm vinyl record when it first came out...

  • @coyotewest -You are right about the band- If I'm not mistaken the original bass player was a high school classmate names Brad Shapiro. I don't know about the rest of the band. I agree with you the original was fantastic.

  • @coyotewest

It's probably the same bandmembers. The studio version was heavily produced with a lot of echo, and other studio effects that you can't necessary replicate live. The live band isn't using any effects, they're just playing clean.

  • @sluv2600 I like this live version much better than the recording...it is very jazzy in that funky California way...just an edge of "Big Brother and the Holding Company" to it....:-), a little choppy in spots but all the heart is there....

  • @gurlsingerfan

I like this version a lot too. There's no keyboards or overdubs. It's just pure live music - as it should be.

  • @coyotewest I agree --it's a shame the recorded version heard in the beginning of this vid doesn't continue throughout. The production on that version was superb; it really showed Linda's talents off.

  • @coyotewest This version is Linda out on her own much later…the Eagles use to back her up and I’m not sure if this is them. That is where the song Desperado comes from, her back-up band called The Eagles wrote the song. Don Henley

  • By good version you mean the studio version..which can be electronically tweaked and played with I assume.

  • Crazy how it starts off with the good version, and then just degenerates into a horrible nightmare. Won't someone post the good version?

  • starts good and goes into some fucked up out of tune honky tonk red neck rubbish

  • Raw voice. She took off where Lulu left us.

  • great voice HORRID music oh man out of tune and must be high! hha

  • The guitarist doesn't seem to have played this song too many times beforehand

  • Doesn't appear that ANY of the band members did. What a dreadful backing band. Notice how the drummer keeps changing tempo and meter? Is it a country song? A skiffle song? Ska? The drummer tries out all of the above!

  • i luv dis song;)

  • Greatest single ever - you can download the single on Amazon as an MP3. Wonderful

  • I loved her barefeet feet as her voice when he sang J.D. Souther song specially uauhhh!.....

  • OMG the band is terrible!!!

  • Have to agree. At first I thought it was just the room they were playing, but I take points off for their interpretation/style for this song. On the other hand, Linda belts it out and saves the day.

  • Please, someone upload the entire original record, as in the beginning of this video, not the live version. One of my favorites.

  • I'll second this request!

  • It was posted...The copyright NAZIS may have been at work

  • @harbor268 ..she is a goddess

  • @harbor268 Go buy it from iTunes, man.

  • I always want the live versions because I have all the originals on cd without downloading it's the live versions I don't have.

  • @harbor268 for the orginal version to the on uploaded by tonyobrien68. it's the one i remember

  • @harbor268

for the orginal version go to the one uploaded by tonyobrien68. it's the one i remember

  • Why was the group's name spelled PONEYS?

  • probably to make it look psychadelic, like the byrds etc..

  • That's a possibility, I must admit.

  • ..The Linda R. Scrapbook mentions:"The name Stone poneys was taken from the title of bluesman Charley Patton's ,Stone Poney Blues. The name might seem particularly fitting since the S.P. were not a happy group"...(by Mary Ellen Moore)

  • Thanks!

So maybe the answer is just that Charley Patton couldn't spell... 8-)

  • that's a good one!!

  • I love this song! Somebody, please post studio version, It was posted but I can't find it anymore.

  • The backing is closer to the way Michael Nesmith meant it to be.

  • Linda does a neat job with this song.

But the backing is the strangest I've heard, and the beat is kinda off. Thank goodness for Linda's great sense of timing, she manages to swing it along and keep it all in sync. She makes it work.

  • I have those albums. They were my dads. They're mine now.

  • back for another listen of this incredible song!! did anyone find the full chart version?

  • post the bloody thing anyone lol

  • Ohh the first 15 seconds of this clip is macic, best ever. I've got the original record and it is just like that, pure macig.

  • Post it!!!!

  • I've got the LP, so it is a little bit difficult.

  • There was a "full chart version" posted...Where the hell did it go? Did YouTube banish it?

  • Please please please could someone (anyone) post the full chart version of this song.

The drummer must have finished that shed by now and started on the garden furniture.

  • What an awesome voice she has.. great old song too!! <3 <3 <3 <3

  • Love this, Linda is incredible, non-forgettable, simply wonderful!!! This is a timeless "feelgood" song so endearing still today!!

  • Is this drummer knocking up a shed in the background?

  • I'm not sure what you mean by that, but I do believe he was playing with a different drum.

  • by far one of the most beautiful woman I've ever seen. Her voice gives me goosebumps

  • What a piece of art... Her voice is just amazing... lyrics really somthing! The Stone Ponys suck but it makes her voice stand out and works really well.

  • Young Linda was pretty HOT!

  • I wish someone would post the full chart version, so much better than the live version.

  • Is there a full chart version? Can anyone post a link?

What a great song. Full marks to Mike Nesmith, the writer, ex-Monkees. He left to do 'proper rock' and I guess this was it. Any other great MN songs you know of?

  • Rio

  • her and laura nyro were the best women though i did like caroel king

  • The only other singer with a voice like hers is Judith Durham of the Australian group The Seekers from about the same time.

  • Linda was the Britney of the 70's

    Still a spunkbubble.

Wonder what she looks like now?

  • Uh, no. Unlike Britney she could actually sing.

  • Yeah right. Because Britney could sing like this... Not a chance in hell. Linda could sing and she was pretty. Britney couldn't sing the names of the two kids she gave up.

  • A few of the stone ponies turned into the Eagles, so much for calling them a pile of crap

  • Comment removed

  • I'm not sure who you mean. We did sound for them when they played here about 1967. The band hung around with my band for the three days they stayed over until their next gig. Their drummer was a Canadian studio drummer named Tony Day and he and the bass player were side musicians. The two guitar players, I think it was Bob Kimmel and they called the long haired other one "Shep", were the Stone Ponys with Linda. I know they sounded great in the concert and I leared tons of drum stuff from Tony.

  • MOYT, The Stone Poney's was the band she was in.

  • i don't see why everyone is complaining about the band

  • the band sucks big time and ruins Lindas song

  • audio equipment in the 60's and 70;s in video and tv studios only captured a very limited bandwidth as no one imagned that audio would be such an important part of tv and video production it wasnt even capable of recording in stereo thats why the band sounds very flat

  • I know all about the equipment of the 60's as I was involved in the business at the time. That's not what I'm referring to. The Band's tempo and lack of ability was what I was commenting on.

  • Help. You Tube is going bankrupt please tell all your friends we have to save you tube or else well have to rely on government & Rothschild controlled media for your news and entertainment. THIS IS NOT A JOKE. We need to do something

  • Is this really true? I read something about this a few days ago. YouTube isn't nonprofit like Wikipedia, and they don't seem to feature a lot of ads. So how do they monetize this site? And I agree, YT is too valuable for it too just disappear.

  • yes unfortunately it is true this is a big money looser for Google but it Google was smart they should advertise their software they produce on you tube like G drive and Chrome

  • thanks for the memories....I love this....yes....

  • she is so damn pretty!

  • not anymore

  • What a voice, are you kidding me, and attractive, wow, me likey and always likey

  • the stone ponys are a pile of crap.

  • this performance is classic...Timeless....There are good and bad people in all races...some more attractive than others....It is the soul thats important

  • and does that really matter???

what are you not where do you come from.

  • Wow. You really sound like an ignorant blonde. To say that there are more ugly Mexicans than pretty ones. I've seen ALOT of Mexicans who are better looking than your picture.Yes, there are alot of illegal Mexicans in the U.S., but why do you have to associate the word Mexican with the word illegals? And just because they're illegal doesn't make them ugly. It means they're illegal and should go through the proper process and pay taxes like the rest of us. And FYI Linda isn't half Mexican either.

  • "Mexican" is a nationality, not a race, and Mexico happens to be a multi-racial country and you will see many types of people living there. Sadly, the ugly, short and tanned Mexicans that you see in the States are the poorest of Mexican society, the indigenous people. But there are many "white," and "pretty" Mexicans out there and since they are wealthy, they have no need to move out. I have a Mexican friend of Norwegian descent, I bet she is more blonde than you, yet she is a proud Mexican.
