Much of Usnea's medicincal properties are found in Alectoria (the variety you had your hands on). The biggest issue with any "hairy" lichen for insulation and/or firestarting is the fact that it absorbs a great deal of moisture from the air, and of course, from rain. That moisture can be held, even in the dead of winter by the absorbant properties of Usnea or Alectoria. Once damp, it holds no real insulative value.
