@syngar99 only proves that if it is well written it will be universally appealing. Many of the great song writers were fags.. and their songs were sung by hetrosexuals
Homophobes are afraid of homos, not repulsed by them. Maybe you should pick up a dictionary or two.
There is nothing wrong with pointing out that this song certainly sounds like a drag queen routine when he does it. Maybe the only one in serious denial here is you... just possibly.
Screened the 1994 film Exotica for Betty tonight. I haven't seen it since it's theater release. This Leonard Cohen song has a prominent place in the movie. That lead me to various versions including Rufus'. He is such a dynamic performer, he really gives this song life. Also See Cohen's version. The co-writer of this song is R&B singer Sharon Robinson. I think I like her version best.
it looks like he's really having a good time singing this. he is so truly fabulous. it was kinda a wierd sped up cover of Cohen's song but I liked it i love anything Rufus puts hips lips too....he's so rad! I like how he isn't afraid to express himself...I feel so sorry for straight dudes in our society, they can never let loose and have fun and be themselves, express yourself!
When I first heard this version it reminded me of an old jazz standard called "Puttin' on the Ritz". It is a brassy big band sound. Checking out other work by Rufus I discovered he does a version of "Puttin' on the Ritz". I don't care who he has sex with, I think he is great and a great interpreter of Cohen's work.
@annoula8919 What was up with those comments? I don't get that. This is a phenomenal version of this song. Like Cohen says, the Wainwrights are keeping his music alive. They are doing it beautifully too.
i love this song when he sings it and for the people that say he lisps is because hes gay but i have nothing against that its funny at the end his mom says eh! ROFL!
I find it really funny when people go on and on about how he's butchered this and ruined Cohen's statement when you consider that Leonard loves what the Wainwrights do with his songs
a song like any work of art is a subjective thing. I like Rufus' rendition makes sense. People feign ignorance so they can keep enjoying themselves sometimes at the expense of others. I think Rufus plays the part of a court jester here instead of a sullen man who sits in the dark which is another way you can take it.

to each his own, but this is simply garbage. especially when u consider he likles leonard cohen.
although i have , as a rule, always found the original versions of songs to be the best, there are some very brilliant covers as well. are you suggesting a blanket statement that covers are all bad simply because they are not the original?
I agree. This song is too dirt-tough, rel-world, to bee a tango-esque song. I love Rufus, but this just isn't cutting it for me. However, I adore his rendition of "Hallelujah".

I hate this guy's voice. This song should always be sung in a deep hypmotizing voice, not this stupid horrible highpitched unsexy voice. And he sounds so damn lazy. FUCK THIS GUY. He sings like a WIMP. Fuck him for doing this to a great great song.
I've always loved Leonard Cohen's version but this is just mindblowing. Rufus is so damn sexy singing this, I can't stop watching. Is he really gay? Shame.
Timely lyrics: "The war is over, the good guys lost, the game is fixed, the poor stay poor and the rich get rich, the boat is leaking, the captain lied.." Could be about the Bush Administration....
Everytime I saw Rufus Wainwright playing live on TV over here in the UK, I immediately didn't warm to him until I saw an interview where he came across as so sexy and with a filthy mind. He is so sexy.....
panakuken: Research has just shown what most of us already know, men who are 'straight' and are so adamant about hating homosexual men get turned on by looking at nude images of men. In fact, in test studies, straight women were turned on by any kind of sexual image and gay men were obviously turned on by men, straight men who do not tell the world how they 'hate fags were turned on by pictures of women but the men who were homophobic were turned on by images of men! Be careful with your words.
I love this song and Rufus, but this is actually the first time I've seen what he looks like on stage.. its actually pretty weird... I prefer to just listen.
Beautiful, dynamic version that adds a sly sexual element to what "Everybody Knows." Why be dogmatic!? The original versions will be on this planet for generations because it's timeless material, but Rufus does a fantastic job of making this song his for a few rousing minutes! I watched the movie last night once--and this song three times in a row! I came to it for the Cohen and the Nick Cave, but thought Rufus stold the show with 3 good, diverse takes on 3 great songs.
I love this!!!! He adds a real new dimension to the song with his style & humor. Leonard is right - he & Martha are really bringing his music to life. Great!!!
That line really drives me mad, I don't know if he fucked up or did it intentionally, but for me it's the lowpoint of the performance. The original line has a lot better flow.
Oddly enough, the soundtrack CD associated with this movie clip from 'I'm Your Man' has a different version & he does that line correctly - artefact. There are 2 versions of all the songs & some show up in the ones chosen for the dvd portion, while others were chosen for the soundtrack cd - go figure! Must have been a couple performances & they took the ones they wanted for each. Bugs me though because they left Hallelujah off of the soundtrack & I've not heard it done quite the same ever...

I prefer this version to Leonard Cohen's in spite of the fact that Cohen is the author of this (very good) song.
When Leonard sings it, it is resigned, even a bit sad song.
When Rufus sings, it's cynical, satiric and a bit cruel. A song with hard edge. (I'm femal, have 2 kids.)
