  • gives me proper goosebumps!

  • I heard a pretty nice cover to this the other day its by a buffalo rapper

JaeSmoove716 is his youtube user name

check out his page the song was called iRock

  • i wish this song would never end

  • There's always 3, totally awesome ambience, Sy Smith is outstanding, and a tidy rap too. 1 love.

  • This song really speaks to me

  • I keep this on major repeat

  • @kolouramor im with you on that.. beatiful and tranquil.. this is like a visual interpretation of a blissful day :)

  • chingy's version is doper than dope, niggaz! and don'T call me a mainstream nigga! I'm an underground nigga! I LIsten to little brother and shit! so don'T compare this version to chingy's version! they're both great

  • @beatmixxxes whats chingy's version called?

  • @p3wned Pulling me back

  • @lpfan091989 holy shit i didnt even recognize it all this time

  • @beatmixxxes You forgot to mention the original version by Jaco Pastorius... also Marcus millers cover of this song... check 'em out

  • Not bad, Decent lyrics, but everybody & their Grandma has used Jaco's "Portrait of Tracy" sample Loop...it kinda Dates the track ( further back than '08) I'm surprised Sy didn't do an original track-she's a helluva producer as well as a singer. The Lyrics/Vocals are the stars on this one, the Production? Same Old stuff...

  • I can relate to kay's lyrics it's almost my life song to the tee

I remember growing up in a nice community then over nite in became a fuck up place to live

  • a good friend of mine put me on to this years ago and i am still in love with it to this day... beautiful composition.

  • This is musical bliss...real Hip Hop with positive flow, layered with a dope beat and finished off with a hevenly voice from Sy...now that is real music, that springs from artists who are still true to what music entails....aint no argument that Nicolay did a good job, much much better that some rubbish sub standard producers who get acclaim for churning out musical rubbish

  • she has an angelic voice

  • and on another note, Sy Smith was the singing for "Aisha" in Saint's Row 2..

  • To put life song, its a message that I am learning...That is life wow, love this song..

  • How can soul/hiphop music get any better than this today?? This is fine music.

  • Like this song with its smooth and laid back tone.

  • Rapper kinda sounds like Mos Def wow

  • I so love this song i listen to it everyday .. its beautiful <3

  • yo i LOVE this

  • swv RAIN

  • I'm tired of hearing shit bout producers stealing music by sampling. In the jazz world, there's a thing called 'jazz standards'. Musicians like Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Thelonius all got their recognition from putting their own interpretation of these standards. Some of those standards were written by virtually unknowns, but credit was always given either way. THIS IS HOW MUSIC HAS ALWAYS BEEN! Sampling/interpolation is the same damn thing. It's a reinterpretation.

  • @1Savioso1 Dude.... you've got to be kidding me. Not to like it is fine, whatever, but to not be impressed and think jaco is lifeless is madness.

  • @1Savioso1 you're comparing a musician vs. a producer. I love Nicolay, but he's not known for his musicianship, although he plays bass and keys very well. But Jaco was kinda like the J Dilla of bassists, even today. So to praise a producer and bash the musician he found inspiration from to create it...well, you just deserve to be shitted on.

  • It is a nice beat. I know it wwas used by others, even before jaco just freaked it. It has been going. I ENJOY THIS MELODY. I am glad that at least being reused, that they did it correctly

  • hip hop classic...for real!!

  • thats a GREAT question b/c this song is DEFINITELY the shit lol...storytelling lyricism at its best haha...and don't sleep on Sy Smith either haha

  • sephyiroth....For real...

    Peace & light

  • How Come i never heard this shit before?..

  • @sephyiroth Direct that question to the radio industry?

  • @sephyiroth

    Because, radio-hop is dead.

  • dun sleep

  • The realest and most genuine Hip-Hop track I've ever heard. The underground shines and lives on.

  • Giving music life....The mainstream music to day has no life....lets all stand up and blast these beautiful beats & lyrics to the devils of the mainstream, i'm talking about all the devil listeners too.....REAL MUSIC for GOD'S People....All those with a soul....Keep up the good work & lets expose the fakes who think they are trendy & tough for what they follow, they are nothing but sheep getting ready for the slaughter...WE SHALL SLAUGHTER THEM WITH OUR MUSIC...lol.....

    PEACE TO THE AWAKEND

  • I feel ya 100 percent.

  • Fuck The Illuminati.

  • no need to smoke for enjoy this joint

  • at least this is better than chingys portrait of tracy rip off. jaco should have more credit for his work.

  • This has that SWV beat in it "Rain"

  • It's Jaco Pastorius' beat, "Portrait of Tracy", you wank.

  • @conormang jaco dident make beats he was a bass player

  • Yeah, no shit. I know that, thanks anyway.

  • i dont know why u have thumbs down bro cuz u are right. rain replayed.

  • WTH Why did people "thumbs down" this, it's absolutely true. Recognized it the 1st time I heard this. It's not a problem though...I LOVE THIS SONG.

  • this song is so dope, this is real music

  • Yes this song is in heavy rotation right now, and has been for a while. Wake up to it, go to bed to it.

  • This was my 1st favorite Nicolay song. This is Pure Hip-hop. It would be nice to hear songs like this than the crap on the radio

  • great song. very soothing

  • love it... so smooth song.. actually words can't describe this hah , i could listen to this all day & every day.. just so... amazing

  • excellent...

  • Inspiring hip-hop! A lesson to those who think they know what this "struggle" is! THIS IS MUSIC!

Lyricism hits home for me. Nicolay's blend went really well with Kay's story. Thank God for conscious minds like these!

Sad that this will go unnoticed by 99.9% of the world. Not to be selfish, but this is my special gem.

  • Hip-hop Eternalist.

  • This is the better of the "Protrait of Tracy" sampled songs, in my opinion. I may actually listen to more Nicolay. I think he is a fellow key player.

  • Jaco, Jaco, Jaco. Hey man I used to copy Stevie songs to give to girls as letters too.

    LMATFO.

  • i love this song

    this song needs a video

  • amazing song

  • i listen to this every mornin that i wake up... good song

  • thank you man for the great music. you do your own thing. this track sounds so wonderful, so smooth. big respect from germany...

  • Classic done track luv it.

  • I think the chrous could of been way better but other than that this track is definitly tight!!!!

  • this track is so bomb..

  • this song is hot

  • love the front cover of this album

  • chill out man. its called sampling. ive seen you hating on any beat that uses portrait of tracy. its creative, its not stealing and a lot of the time sounds good so sit back and jam.

  • its creative and its a dope song but they should at least site jaco considering how much the beat is based on portrait of tracy, but for all i know they do. i dont own the album or anything. just my 2 cents

  • it's called recycling :)

  • I heard this song today on Morning Becomes Eclectic..I knew I'd find it here..

  • reminds me of rolling a blunt on a train during a rainy day and having a second thought when i first heard this song

  • Swv's track called "Rain"(1997) and Chingy feat Tyreese track called "Pulling me back"(2005) have already used the Jaco Pastorius sample called "Portrait to Tracy"...It such a wonderful track to use as a sample for hiphop or Rnb music. Jaco was considered the greatest bass player who ever lived because of of his use of "Harmonics" when playing the fretless bass guitar. He used this Harmonic style of playing to create "Portrait of Tracy"(1976)...

Please use You tube to find those songs above.

  • This was the first song on the "Here" album that stood out to me. Its is deep and very meaningful, and Sy Smiths voice is absolutely beautiful. Great track. Thanks for posting.

  • her voice is beautiful i gotta check out the rest of her music now

  • Furthermore, as far as I can tell, recreation/translation is totally different from sampling, as sampling involves incorporating the actual original recording into the new song. Though I have no problem with sampling that gives due credit, sampling does not seem to be an issue here for those who don't like it.

I hope that clears-up some of the confusion/disagreements.

  • you're right, i didn't mean sampling to be the same, i know nicolay must have just used the same musical notes. and you're right about the sampling definition. that was my mistake. so just forget the whole discussion and enjoy the music.

  • It's good that you get indignant over plagiarism. I can't stand those jokers who say crap like, "Culture belongs to everyone." I believe in due credit. That's why I pay for every album that I own.

Anyway, I think this is quite possibly the greatest song that I have ever heard. Period. The harmony is absolutely PERFECT. It is the only reason that I bought the album. The Rhodes kinda reminds me of the DOOGIE HOWSER theme song. And Sy Smith's vocals are great. Absolutely orgasmic.

  • Super late reply, but I agree with this being one of the greatest songs ever. All the elements in this song came together nicely. I love it when artists' minds come together for a common purpose to make something successful as this. Nic is from the other side of this world from Kay and Sy...and yet they make music like they are one entity. This song hits me deep.

  • Yeah, all I could think when I heard this was, "Yes! This is the sound." The harmony is incredible.

  • Jaco's genius shining through...

  • I just listened to the Jaco "Portrait of Tracy" vid. It does sound like Nicolay perhaps took a nod from Jaco, but Jaco's bass is more arhythmic. Furthermore, Jaco has ONLY bass. Nicolay adds a Rhodes, piano, synths, bass, keyboards, and the programming element, and wrote his own parts accordingly for all of those (I know b/c I have the album and I am reading from the inside cover). Recreating a couple of measures from a song and adding all of those extra elements hardly counts as plagiarism.

  • oh my god what a beautiful song, great memories came back

thanks for postng it man it's just amazing

  • i know, this was the first song that i heard of nicolay. it has this enjoyable sound that i like. check out my other videos and thanks for the comment.

  • that was all the same for me, that was my first song I heard from nicolay, and that sound yeah that sound, what else I can say, just listen...

    peace

  • Its jacos sound , check out portrait of tracy by jaco

  • Reading some of the comments on here is actually making me annoyed, people giving this guy credit for stealing someone elses music...or "sampling" i should say

Jaco pastorious needs credit , for the amazing backing track your all hearing

  • you know people in hip-hop sample and i had no idea who jaco was. nicolay does play bass so he sampled the notes and used it in the song. chill out man, if i had known that, i would have to mentioned that to people. you know that sampling is like doing a quote.

  • @lpfan091989 Nicolay could never recreate the beauty of portaits of tracy. Nobody can.

  • @UnholyBehemoth6 I disagree, it has the sound that Portrait of Tracy had. It can't be covered entirely but parts of the song can be recreated to highlights its beauty.

  • @lpfan091989 Jaco's version is the only one that sends chills down my spine.

  • @UnholyBehemoth6 the original is f'n ridiculous. It halts me too. Old seventies gold that was intergalactically ahead of its time.

  • The Justus League affiliates put out the realest, smoothest music ever. This song with Kay & Sy. Come Around on The Foreign Exchange with D-Brock on vocals, and the long list of Little Brother songs. Nicolay is not far behind 9th Wonder. They'll both be legends in the future if they aren't already.

  • thanks for the comment. i agree 100%. i enjoy both nicolay and 9th wonder but i prefer nicolay a little bit more but they have a similar style. and the most important part, they are both badass.

  • sy smith performing at Singapore on 13 & 14 sept 2008.. check out the promo youtube video titled: Concert in the Park/Main Event

  • people you think this is sick, check out nicolays crew called foreign exchange. they r sik, let me no wat u tink

  • this is a smooth lil song

  • i agree with you. this was probably the first one that i heard of nicolay.

  • I feel confident saying this is probably the most beautiful hip hop song I've ever heard...I'm beyond glad someone uploaded this work of art on YouTube. Man, can't believe it's been over a year since I first heard this...

  • glad you liked it. i had a similar experience when i first heard this, it had this sort of relaxation sound to it, i was like "that was fucking badass" a sound that out of this world. but thanks for watching check out my other videos.

  • Beautiful joint. Much love from Jamaica

  • thanks bro, much love from the US. check out the other videos i have.

  • I'm not sure it gets any more beautiful than this...

  • haha, who knows. but this is one of my favorite songs by nicolay. just beautiful.

  • why cant all melodies be as euphoric as this?

  • idk but a lot of nicolay's productions are good, i feel that he is one of the most underrated artists.

  • thanks for the comment. glad you liked it. check out the other songs that i have.

  • one of my favorite songs, da instrumental is like da story soundtrak 2 my life
