As far as comebacks-in 1975 at the US Open (clay-rubico surface then), Manuel Orantes beat Guillermo Vilas by 4-6,1-6,6-2, 7-5 (here Orantes was down 0-5 !! in the 4th set), and then won the 5th by 6-4. I remember seeing that Orantes was still a good sport by not gesturing or pumping like today's hotshots do when he won points and ultimately the 4th set and then the match. Vilas was dazed and very quiet in defeat.
Contrast the heavy topspin, open-stance modern forehand of Roddick with Connor's closed-stance, very flat forehand stroke. It clearly shows how much the game has changed!
i'm trying to track down a connors game at wimbledon. it was in the 80's, connors was playing some sweedish guy i think he was called pernfores or something. connors was 2 sets down and 5-2 down in the 3rd set and i think it was match point, anyway connors came back and won with loads of fist waving and shouting. best tennis ever can anyone help find it.
@wfamdaxj - Yes - it used to be on the BBC website as one of their top ten all time matches. Should still be there. They billed it as the best ever comeback in tennis.
@wfamdaxj That was Wimbledon 1987, 4th round. Mikael Pernfors was leading Jimmy Connors 6-1, 6-1, 4-1 and lost the match in 5 sets. Great match. You can pick it up from several of the online sellers of tennis matches on DVD. I bought a copy of this match earlier this year (but mine was from the HBO coverage that picked it up at 4-1 in the 3rd, so it's not the entire match).
Andy got to the US Open final not very long after Connors started coaching him; Jimmy DID help certain parts of Andy's game. But, biggest problem may be his "head"...
Man Jim was woopin that ass. Moving pretty good, Roddick wasn't taking it that easy. He was a great Player, but it seems he was not the best choice as Coach for Andy as he is doing a lot better now.

I wonder how much connors has been able to teach roddick so far..i think roddick just needs to fine tune and polish his tennis more, become more gracefull and skillfull with his strokes, and keep improving on his net game and tactis in general..
lmao connors so terrible

Great to see this!
If nothing else, there's one thing Roddick learnt from Jimmy when he was his coach: the never give up attitude even if you appear to be down and out!
Jimmy's comebacks are the stuff of legend because he's a Legend of the Game!
