@Elementfifth Thanks for your question. A quilt is made of three layers. A top ( the colored one seen in my video), a batting ( the cotton, wool, silk, polyester or a blend ), and a backing ( you can't see the backing in the video). The backing is the back of your quilt, and can be any color you choose. The backing and batting are generally cut larger than the quilt top. This makes it easier to put the quilt into the hoop for hand quilting. This excess will be cut away after squaring.
Thanks for your comment, islandsofMI. You are correct in your observation regarding larger quilts. When I square up my large quilts, I use the floor or any flat surface large enough to allow the quilt to lie flat. Use the rulers as I demonstrate on the video , but for these long sides keep staggering them and continue drawing your line as you go. If you find you are off the quilt at any point, then start again by bringing the ruler in from the edge as needed. Hope this helps !

This video would have been useful it it was done with a much larger quilt. Most quilts don't fit on top of a table for squaring.
