I do not like the new Code of Points, especially the step on the landing! It's taking away the artistry that is usually associated with women's gymnastics! Bring back the old Code of Points from 2006-2008!
@totalchic347 you have to remember that athletes were beginning to stick landings then too, and didnt get awarded extra points for it, compared to athletes who took a controlled lunge back. i think this new code wants those athletes who do stick landings to be awarded for it. i love artistry as well, but this is a fair rule.
Ok i'd like to know what is going on with Ivana at this point. I know she has suffered an ACL injury in March 2010 but now it is August 2011 and I haven't seen her since the world championships in 2009. I would of thought she would of recovered by now and she would be fighting for a spot on the World team in Tokyo this year, is she on leave or something????
@liukin95 she is actually going to stanford this year I think to do NCAA there. such a shame that she didn't stay elite, but she'll make a great addition to stanford's team without a doubt! :)
That step deduction is so stupid. This is women's gymnastics, NOT mens! And then they want them to do beautiful choreography? No wonder people are upset, the new code has really taken the artistry out of artistic gymnastics.
They don't deductions like this on bars...they need to degrade the bar elements to give gymnast not strong on bars a chance...you can be mediocre on every other event and be super on bars and win all around? That's not my definition of an All Around Champion but it is what it is.
Yes, in a sense, the scoring is now out of a 20. However, a typical Olympic difficulty score is from 5-6. (To obtain the difficulty score, you take the hardest 8 elements in a routine, and add their worth together. Each element is either A, B, C etc all the way to G. A skills (the easiest) are worth 0.1. B skills are worth 0.2 etc. Once you have added the elements you then add 2.5 for composition requirements. Therefore, most routines you see now are in the 14-15 average.
the only person who didnt rly take much steps was carly patterson... she nailed like every landing on her floor routine! i know this is off subject but just saying. and the step rule thing just doesn't make any sense! how ru supposed to land a double double or a triple twist without taking a step back?!
The no step rule is ridiculous. Some gymnasts actually have to use the step in order to balance themselves.....if F.I.G. wants WAG to be more artistic, maybe they shouldn't make women land tumbling passes like the men.
You are missing the point of the rule change...what do you propose to do with the athlete who cannot land in control (great example in this video) and the athlete who CAN land in control such as Courtney McCool? Do they both get the same score, even though one clearly can control her acrobatic abilities and the other cannot?!
@copper0 taking a lunge back isn't lack of control it's been there since the 1930's and NOW they decide it's no good. Well sorry i find it down right ridiculos for gymnast who have been training they're hole life with a lunge at the end of tumbling passes have to change everything now. It's absolutley disgusting. No artistic quality wat-so-ever. Screw it.
@peepers2221 so what you're saying is that the only reason the athletes took the lunge back was for artistic purposes? Please, give me a break. Ninety percent of them do it because the landing is short, or they over rotated. The lunges were lazy gymnastics, the artistry is still there, they just need to focus more on the dance elements, which is as it should be. Lunges aren't allowed for vault, beam or bars and not at all for the men, they need to deal with it, enough said.
@tmwalkerm floor work is totally different from work done on the beam-the beam is a lot more of a precise landing whereas on the floor it's a broader range of motion. The gymnastic tumbling passes the men do is harder because guess what? They are MEN and are stronger so the women shouldn't be expected to do the same.
@possefever it fits Ivana really good. It sounds elegant and her whole routine is too. Ivana is my favorite for the USA. I liked her old music better though.
i think the new step on the landing rule is the stupidest thing ever, i love gymnastics its just all these rule changes are getting sooo confusing, i miss watching gymnastics and enjoying it, now you have to realize all the new rules and deductions and stuff:/ well anyways i love ivana, shes sucha beautiful gymnast!:)
@eve9206 so why are they able to do it off the beam or off the bars and not take a step? The new rule makes total sense, these athletes need to break the habit sometime, they've gotten away with it for far too long.
@snowfallsherenow The difference is landing, showing a good stick, and then doing a presentational lunge afterwards, versus taking a big step backwards to prevent over-rotating and trying to cover it up with the lunge. Most girls save their landings by doing this, rather than ACTUALLY landing.
just because she moved to woga doesnt mean she got to copy every dance move from nastia. people do u feel me here?. from start to finish pose ! ivana show some originality here girl.
@saichoutmg It's not just since she moved to WOGA though. Watch her routine from 2008 and then watch Nastia's routine from 2005. They have that exact same handstand circle back bridge thing in the middle of their routine.
"Lack of conrol" ?? hello?? That's the best full twisting double pike i've ever seen. The height, and position, legs are glued together and toes pointed.
These commentators never say anything to other gymnasts but to Ivana they're like "There that's a tenth" "that's a tenth" .. blaaaah. Judges can take away a tenth on the landing but not for anything else from Ivana. Her execution is just too perfect.
Actually the judges could take three tenths for Ivana's landing. And she did show lack of control. She landed with her head down causing her to take a step back. That, and not being 100% use to the skill yet made her take a BIG Step. I agree her position in the air is wonderful but she doesn't have as much control as she should.
The commentators mentioned the landing deductions during Ivana's routine because John specifically asked Tim to point out and explain the landing deductions in the new code. Besides, she did land her full-in pike low and took a rather large step back.
Well, she did rebound a bit on the landing and they were trying to explain the new rules where you can't do the lounge. It looked nice in the air but the landing was low and the rebound action was evident.
Perfect form is not perfect execution. Ivana's form has always been great, but her execution was always lacking at GAGE, she's improved a ton at WOGA, and still has more room to improve. I look forward to seeing the changes.
Beautiful double L.

okay so I'm confused so what is it out of? I know there is 10 for difficulty, so Is it 10 too for execution, which would make it out of 20 or..
