I taught for 32 years and retired 3 years ago today (Turkish Teachers' Day). I saw this movie when I started university. I always wanted to be a teacher like him
Wish the person who made this would have included the song at the end, the version includes that heavy percussion at the start of the song and is impossible to find.
Awesome. I was a teacher for 17 years in public schools in the US. This is one of the few movies that shows why a teacher succeeds for the right reasons.
Good memories from 13 years old,...immediately went to the record store afterward to by the 45. The guy running the shop, picked up the phone, and said, "You've got to get me more 'To Sir with Love records', all the kids want them". Great clip.
Remembering the Odion theatre '67 I wagged school to watch this .. It was worth 6 of the best (leather strap on hands by teacher) no doubt still emotional
Loved this movie and song. I had forgotten about the gift they give him. Sidney Poitier was great in this (and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.) I have never heard this song To Sir With Love without tearing up - to touching!!!
Esta película la vi con mis compañeros de la uni; me gusto :D creo que me gustaría ser maestro :) aunque muchos chicos no aprecien a verdaderos profesores[y muchos así que hacen falta en México] pues es una de las mas nobles profesiones humanas.
I agree with all the comments about the real substance of this film, so I won't repeat them. Instead I'll make a more secondary observation: The band in this scene is great too!
The Greatest Movie Ever, In the "Greatest Decade" of the 20th Century.
"To Sir with Love".., The movie and song in 1967,,, has stood the "Test of Time" , in a "Decade" of:,, Rebellion,, War,, Peace, Protests, Turmoil, and Love,,, and starting to, and breaking down of Barriers and Biases,,, and ending with "Woodstock",, in NY,, on Friday, Aug. 15-18, 1969,, with Jimi Hendrix ending Woodstock on Monday morning with only about 50,000 people there.
how I wish it were yesterday. IF IT WERE UP TO ME? I'D make sure every Teacher in America like Sir, who loved teaching and cared for and about the students they were teaching and were committed to teaching twenty-five- thirty years got a $150.000 per year Tax -free each year after seven years, and when they retired i'd see to it they still got a $75,000 per year tax free pension for life. because they gave 25 to 30 years of there life to educate our children, which are our future.
The 1960's was a Decade of Extremes.. From one end of the Spectrum to the other,, Unlike any other in my life.
It's one of the Best Movies Ever.. Because of the way, "Sir" used a little Phycology on them,, to turn the Unruly Kids,, Into “People”, One Day. (With-in a few weeks).
gives me hope that the racism in american will someday go and people just accept people as fellow human beings.. gives me hope that its possible anyway
Sidney Poitier is one of my favorite actors and I love this movie. This song sums up a whole year of the teacher trying to prepare these kids for life. I wish I had someone like that that genuinely cared when I was in school. I love this movie! I love Sidney Poitier and I love this song!
This scene brings a lump to my throat every time I see it! My mother loved this movie and this song and I can still see the 45 mixed in with her old records. Great movie, message and song. Some of the hateful posts on you tube makes me feel really sad, angry and hopeless; but then, when I see movie moments like this and read the posts from normal ethical people, it makes me feel hopeful again! THANK YOU for sharing this!
I have watched this. This was the movie who inspired to who I am right now...a teacher. I love how this movie inspired me to become one. Especially the song "TO sir with Love" it has a wonderful message.
This song will endure as long as school endures! It encapsulates the adolescent maturing and the crush all children feel for a teacher or two. A classic song with beautiful lyrics beautifully sung like only the one artist on earth could sing and do it justice - lulu.
@midgetgirl5 I wouldn't go that far. I thought it was a charming film when I saw it but I thought it was naive that a black man who had to work as hard as he did would give up a real career to teach in a school like that based on emotional reasons. Maybe I'm too logical.
@midgetgirl5 I guess that works in the land of fiction and make believe but this is based on a true story and I believe the man this was based on did not go on to have a teaching career. In any event, the film is a product of its times.
@MultiSmartass1 well it must have worked well enough to still pay him enough to have a roof over his head and food on the table. but yes it is a good movie!!!
@midgetgirl5 Not enough that he would leave it to write the book this movie was based on (which i have happened to read) and take up another career. Teaching doesn't pay a whole lot unfortunately.
@MultiSmartass1 well i will agree that teaching doesn't pay enough. both of my parents are junior high teachers. they make a decent living but they should get paid more for the stuff they have to put up with but they love there jobs so they will teach till the day they retire. well i hope that sir is happy with his life and i hope he was happy with the other career he chose!!!
@midgetgirl5 If you parents like their job then that's good but there's a lot of crap that teachers put with up that I would never deal with. I trained years ago to be a substitute and passed a test but I never did it. Guess I didn't want to put up with students.
@midgetgirl5 Well, good for you then I guess. Funny, I juts saw this movie on DVD yesterday. Very dated now but I guess the core of the film still has relevance.
WTF I'm so slow LMFAO. I've seen this lovely movie enough times since the past 6 or 7 yrs ago. But, to NOW figure out that he ripped up the envelope of the other job is humiliating. Lol, I always wondered what's in the envelope now common sense has fricken spoken lol
I got so angry, so mad, at the end. I compared this ending about a school teacher making a change in young peoples lives with the films of today, and how they would have done it today. They cannot make a beautiful and entertaining
film like this anymore? Has to be dirty? Makes you angry and sad.
I alway love this movie as I remember back in the late 60's when I saw it in El Salvador and compare and sigh how I wanted to have a teacher like that who treat with respect his students as many know that the educational system in El Salvador is the worst and most trashy in Latin Amerca and perhaps in the world and I guess until know still the same as most teachers there are very abusive as many cases of student in order to finish their school year have to sleep with the teacher or principal
Of course is true not all the teachers were like that but so many of them my own mother was a teacher a good one with her students reasson why she never believed the things I said me until now just think about back in El Salvador because I didn't subdued to the teachers tyrant way I was always having bad notes but when I came to study in Canada it was way much different the point is I finish my studies with no good but VERY GOOD notes and in English language
I think all the elements that date this film are what add to its appeal and charm. For those of us born after this time period, a film like this gives us a rare glimpse of a bygone era, music, vocabulary, and styles. We could never experience it but at least we get to see everything in context so that the funny, "old" elements make sense.
Thank you for saying this about this movie that you can learn from this film what your parents or grandparents were going through. I had just turned 21 and it was quite an exprience because Sidney Poitier is not just a great actor but if you paid attention he taught me how to survive on less. He is a clever actor by putting something of himself in it. Also, watch his other movie "A Patch of Blue" too!
Love the dance moves...this whole scene is my fav part of the movie quite a tear jerker when Lulu sings & they give him his gift...thanks for sharing...cheers :)
Thanks so much for posting, there will never be another movie like this. The values taught are priceless and the lessons learned are the best. I agree with Ultrakool, but it wont ever happen
yeah, you're right. now if we can get these child molesting, female teachers, who have been boffing their 13 year old male pupils, to search for the same values as Sir's, we'd be getting somewhere. lol
I remember these scenes form this movie. It brings back great memories !! Great to see Lulu, Sydney poitier. Absolutely great!! Thank you whom ever you are !
Man, this movie came out when I was 5, but I watched it on tv every time it was on as a child. I thought I was the only one who loved this movie so much. I also love the song and cry everytime it comes on. I always had a crush on Sir.
I was nine when this movie came out. In the summer, all the kids use to go to weekend dance parties at each others houses, dancing to the latest Motown, James Brown or Sly and the Family Stone. Everybody use to think they were the best dancer until I laid down my imitation of Poitier's dance routine shown here. It became known simply as "The Poitier," and would inevitably end all discussion or get me thrown out for lunacy. It remains among my best dance moves today. "The Poitier."
i cant believe he ripped up his job offer!

Thanks so much for posting, there will never be another movie like this. The values taught are priceless and the lessons learned are the best. I agree with Ultrakool, but it wont ever happen

I love this movie so much I bought it.
I even have the 2nd one, but it doesn't even come close to this masterpiece.

yeah, you're right. now if we can get these child molesting, female teachers, who have been boffing their 13 year old male pupils, to search for the same values as Sir's, we'd be getting somewhere. lol

Man, this movie came out when I was 5, but I watched it on tv every time it was on as a child. I thought I was the only one who loved this movie so much. I also love the song and cry everytime it comes on. I always had a crush on Sir.

Unique Dance

I was nine when this movie came out. In the summer, all the kids use to go to weekend dance parties at each others houses, dancing to the latest Motown, James Brown or Sly and the Family Stone. Everybody use to think they were the best dancer until I laid down my imitation of Poitier's dance routine shown here. It became known simply as "The Poitier," and would inevitably end all discussion or get me thrown out for lunacy. It remains among my best dance moves today. "The Poitier."
