People always say the "real Genesis" is a great "prog" band. This show proves they should not be placed in a category. The classification of music by genre is silly and meaningless. Arbitrary categories such as R&B, Rock, Disco, Synth Pop and Country are fostered by schools, perpetuated by fools, creates havoc in the business of arts and tends to oppress artists. Even legitimate distinctions such as opera serve only a limited purpose. Check it out.
omg. . i was there. Obviously pissed, else I would recall. But I don't think PG will have Phils (totally synthetic) emotion at the end. But if you want real tears for sale, pendragon or marillion. They didn't go to Public school tee hee
Any1 know where i can get a copy of this?! there are moments in music history: when Lennon met McCartney when Dylan went electric and when the countless great muscians died at 27 Morrison Hendrix Joplin...this should go down as 1 of those moments great moments
Even without video this is amazing. I was 30 foot from the front, Gabriel was brought on in a coffin from what I remember, decided he could no longer play the flute after about 5 minutes and everyone had a great time. Despite standing in the heavy rain since 11am, when Hackett finally came on the place erupted. Four hours to get home soaked to the skin but happy.
Several months after this, Marillion released their debut album and were described as being Genesis rip-offs with critics thinking that Fish copied Peter Gabriel's style.
@DDaSilva1980 Marillion always wore their influence on their sleeve, but are still a pretty good band. They filled the void that Genesis leaving progressive rock left. Can't blame them for having good taste.
@tacomadc I agree. I have every single studio album from the Fish era. I think Marillion took on their own identity from 2nd album Fugazi onwards. I read a recent article in Classic Rock recently where Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks described Genesis as a theatre/art rock band rather than progressive. Phil Collins himself said that that tag applied more to the likes of Yes and ELP as they liked playing songs with long instrumental solos.
@TygrasKittenKori ............'58 was even better..LoL////got to grow up seeing/doing it all!!!1 I tell my 20yr old son....there was nothing like going through your entire teens in the '70's!!! I often listen-watch tunes that made up the "soundtrac of my life"/////rock on!!!!
I was there, so much mud. Remember John Martin played in the day. Talk Talk got booed. When Genesis came on, it was worth the wait, all day standing in the mud and rain. Was like a wave of joy when they hit the stage.
I drove down from Windermere to see this show with my sister, but we broke down near Lancaster. I had to get my mum to come and pick us up and drive us the rest of the way. She sat outside in the muddy car park for 5 hours while we watched the show. What a star... she knew how much it meant for us to be there. One of our friends had a seizure just as Genesis came on and flipped around in the mud for a bit, got up and watched the show like nothing had happened...Quite the day! Awesome memory
Well Peter may have forgotten a bit but then it was a while wasnt it!!? I think Steve Hackett did join a bit before the end but I am getting on a bit - 48 now. Yes again shame nobody apparently filmed it - is that unreal or what??? But just brilliant whatever.

I was there. It was a mudbath - didn't rain during the show but it had pissed it down about 12 hours earlier. Gabriel was ok but I saw them at B'ham NEC and thought they were better without him.
I don't think Steve Hackett was there - if he was it was only for the encore.
Main memory is watching a German coach driver making all his passengers take their boots / shoes off and wash them before he'd let them on his flash coach. We were pissing ourselves on our cheapo National Express.
I was -8 in 1982 and forgot how primitive the handheld camera was those days. But I was lucky to have seen Peter live in 07. And there is NOTHING like a PG concert. Perfection! I can see that if he wasn't satisfied, he wouldnt release the tape. But Phil is retired, Genesis is retired...release the damn tape!
In 1982 I wasn't even born, unluckily, but I was in Rome in 2007 and, at the age of 11, I could see one of the best bands in History. So I think that God descended on Earth through that rain in 1982, so that He could listen to Genesis playing live too :D

It was Mike Rutherford's insistance that the show not be recorded because he knew it would sound the way it did. They had little time to rehearse and Peter hadn't played with the band for over seven years at this point. The whole reason they put this show together was to raise money for Peter's world music project which was going broke and this concert helped to bail him out. Perhaps if they had a bit more time to properly rehearse, we would've had one helluva classic concert video to treasure.
I concur SRNF! What would you give to see and hear Peter, Tony, Mike, Ant, John, Steve and Phil one more time with Bruford, Chester and Stuermer sitting in? They have a social, musical and generational responsibility to do it. Ahhh, what a dream!
@jwild611 It was probably a trade for having Turn It On Again in the set. Who cares though? Peter and Phil's solo careers mean as much to the overall legacy of the band as anything they all recorded together. And don't forget Phil played drums on Peter's early records. I'm sure there was no awkwardness as the split with Peter was always an amicable one and that song says nothing negative about Genesis, it just explains why he left.
Wow, the full version in one hit, excellent upload OH, i have the vinyl of this 3 record set, but ironically dont have a player to play it on. Gabriel with a light sabre on the front.
I recall on the bootleg I heard Jonathan King was greeted by about 1000 people shoting FUCK OFF! FUCK OFF! FUCK OFF! The crowd sang Happy Birthday to Mike Rutherford, (2 October 1982), someone shouted Show Us Your Willy to Peter Gabriel on Carpet Crawlers and the bootleg had the sound of rain on an umbrella during Firth of Fifth. I loved The Lamb/Windshield/Broadway74 the best, with the scintillating syntesizer and fantastic drums. Drumming on Solsbury Hill made it best ever version - IRONIC!
Nice find. I am a bit disappointed that peter overshot and messed up so many times especially the end of Suppers Ready. Still he was rusty....i guess but meh :(
Hope they do one more show. Phil inject some steroids in your back and lets do one more show with Peter for the fans common bro!!!
God damn Peter why couldn't you leave it to just Genesis songs...your solo stuff was great but people don't wanna hear it mixed in with the classic Genesis catalog...just doesn't mix or compare(and I'm a big fan of his solo career)..also wonder if Solsbury his was really about his leaving the band? He never said it himself but if it was must of been awkward performing this all together.
@jason25k Video cameras were few and far between in those days. They were separate cameras and tape recorders-VERY bulky things indeed! And Cine cameras weren't small either. As as for sound-bootlegging could be done relatively easily. A Sony WMD-6C Pro Walkman , frsh set of Duracells, a top quality Microphone, a Metal tape and a keen eye on the counter and a great sounding bootleg was possible. And the bouncers were unlikely to spot you. Also the demand for bootleg videos wasn't around then.
@jason25k I WAS THERE AND I HAVE TO AGREE IAM GOBSMACKED NO ONE HAS ANY THERE WERE PEOPLE WITH CAMERAS SO THEY ARE OUT THERE SOMEWHERE IT WAS THE WORST SHOW IVE EVER ATTENDED FROM A QUALITY PERFORMANCE ASPECT AND YET THE BEST SHOW IVE ATTENDED WITH REGARDS TO EMOTION I LOST MY VOICE WHEN STEVE CAME ON AT THE END
@jason25k People who were there are saying that there were cameras... And I don't know if its true, but I heard that Peter has the video tape of this gig :D
Maybe he just doesnt want to release it, the same with the The lamb lies down on Broadway concerts. He always wanted to have things perfect :D
Respond to this video... In 1982, I think I was hoping to see Peter and Steve back with old pals. How did this reunion was never published. Somebody (s) los a fortune there. 30 years later I find this video to be like a great new story.
@jason25k I agreee brother. I was so disappointed not to see some video in this instead of stills and music behind it. It still amazes me how much Phil and Peter can sound like each other even though Peter is much more theatrical not just in costumes but in his vocal tones and expressions. I use the same in my songwriting inspired by him. You may even notice people like Pearl Jam's singer doing the same in some of their songs, like sounding like an old man, etc. It's awesome. Still a nice post!
@jason25k The band did record this. (They record all their live shows) Many sources who were there say a film crew was present but Peter was not happy with his performance so it was never released. (That is unconfirmed but you can google it there is some debate on it.)
@jason25k Eyewitnesses claim that at the very least, three pro cameras were rolling. It is also rumoured that Peter Gabriel has a ProShot of the concert.
@jason25k Peter Gabriel requested the audio not be released. (There is some speculation and debate that this concert was actually professionally filmed. Some say sources who say they were there noted two camera setups. But Peter was disappointed with his singing. ) Of course like all Genesis concerts the Band themselves records the audio of each gig they do.
1. Fuck whoever wouldnt let Steve Hackett out of his prior gig
2. Daryl Stermer(SP?DRC) sucks
3. Peter Gabriel needs to get over himself and reunite this band again, I dont care if Phil is hurt, make him apart of the show somehow and have Chester do the drums
@MrNotNiceGuy STEVE HACKETT did show up. Daryl does NOT suck. He is not Steve but he DOES NOT SUCK. ON THAT POINT YOU ARE COMPLETELY WRONG. HE is an amazingly good guitarist. If you judge him only related to Genesis and Phil you HAVE NO IDEA.

This is ridiculous; we have 2 hours of live recording from one of my favorite bands and no video!
And stop dividing everybody; Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins are both great, just different styles and I am fine with that. No more hate!

I remember cancelling my wedding once the date was released and im so glad i did.
Me and my mate slept (shivered all night) at the front gate and we were one of the first in and got right down to the front.
The weather was awful and it was so bloody cold but im so glad i went.
Steve Hackett DID come on but only at the encore.
AND YES i did still get married but had to rearrange it all for the the following weekend.

Several things come to mind listening to this
4. Thank you for posting this
