Tis vastly dependant on the individual speakers you are testing/planning to use.
Do me a favor tho - next time you ask a question -- open your mailbox so I can send you the answer to you directly would ya? instead of having to parcel it out bit by bit here with the limited character count thingy they use on here.
((last last info))-- I promise ---- 4 OHM woofers deliver about 3 to 6 db more volume than 8 OHM woofers. Not a problem if you have AMPS with more power than the speaker can handle at 8 OHMs -- but if you are limited -- the 4 OHM woofer will be just a tad more efficent at delivering sound DB's.(generally speaking -- for there is indeed a rating for each speaker as to its "" efficency rating"" that could make that turn out NOT to be true)
Ohhhhhhhhhh -- last info -- the crossovers were for a 3 way speaker design. I just used the low end part of it and never hooked up a midrange nor a tweeter to it. That is how I got the number 800/600 HZ downward.
The 12 inch woofer was actually a Yamaha woofer from a sv12 wedge cabinet. That one hurt the most to find. Just make sure whatever woofer you buy -- you look for a speaker cabinet 12 and not an automobile 12. Also check its specifications to ensure it is capable of playing a signal from 1000 hz downward. Otherwise it will blow up. Most 3 way speaker cabs have speakers capable of 1500 hz or lower. Most 2 way speaker cabs have speakers in them that are capable of 2500 HZ or lower.
The carpeted boxes were used and cheap. ( I think i paid 25 bucks for two of them)
I added bumper corners from parts express. Walmart pillow stuffing was 4 bucks maybe. The foam layer was from a carpet installation tear out and was free. I did have to buy the speaker covers new (Uggggggg). lol
If you are going to build subwoofers for 15 inch speakers -- try for a 1.5 cubic foot box as the minimum size. I wanted above all things for each component to be light to carry -- 30 pounds or less.
Remember that for line arrays filled with MIDRANGE speakers the hole in the EQ of the sound is from 600 or 300 HZ DOWNWARD that you need to fill in.
Have fun!
hardest part was the 12 inch woofer -- crossover was used and rated for 400 watts at either 8 or 4 ohms (you have to set it with a jumper) -- you can get em at Parts Express new. I got the two of them from Ebay from a guy that changed his mind and decided he needed a higher power crossover in his design.
Quarter inch jacks for inputs on the back wall. Cut two holes in each sub front -- precisely the size of 1and half inch plumbing tubing that is used on kitchen sinks in 2 corners. That hole size will allow me to "" tune"" the sub to any frequency i like or leave it open (no tubing) for approximately a 200 hz tuned box. Two six inch tubes inserted should come out close to a 35 or 40 hz tuned box. (if you wish to take it that low)
Hey Man... I watched all of the vids... great job. I've built a few consoles for my DJ equipment... now you have me wanting to build a new line array system. Do you have any videos of how how you built your subs?
Got no video for the subs == but the design was easy to describe to you. I took a Dayton crossover- screwed it into a ONE cubic foot carpeted box in a corner of the back wall inside it. It was a sub-box for a car when I bought it off of Craigslist. Added some padding inside with pillow padding from walmart- did a layer of 3/4 inch foam to keep the pillow padding out of the back of the speaker - and soldered a 12 inch woofer to the wireing.
The garage door WAS open for this and BOTH full 7 foot sticks were used with NO Woofers. Since that particular amp can only output 50 watts per channel (continuous) with a little headroom for peaks (approximately 100 watts per channel peaks) it would seem that it is remarkably loud. Winamp was the player used for the MP3's on that day. It was lots warmer to work out in the garage then too! (Uggggggg winter is here) LOL
Hope to get audio sample video to you all soon. Thanks!
The lack of audio examples is due to lack of time on my part and finding I had a blown 12inch woofer. New woofers have to be purchased - and mounted -and then there is the film to make and edit prior to posting. Hope to get to it soon. I did play with two of them(MP3s playing)with NO woofer attached at 50 Watts of output (100 watt peaks happening on the meter) and had a neighbor arrive from 5 houses down looking to find the party. He lives ACROSS the street and could hear them in his back yard.
Hello Just curious. If the coverage is as good as the Bose why do you personally need two of these? Also it looks like you have already built one so why no audio examples? With that big round base wouldnt it be a little rough on a car seat? How much does this all weigh? The Bose is expensive but packs away in a small area, easy to move around, and built very road worthy.
I built two of them to insure that I could sing to a packed house if I ever got that chance == at 240watts per Line Array == A bar/restaraunt with 200 people in it - and a large square footage - would need 2 of them. As I demonstrated in the video -- the round base unscrews- and weighs about 7 to 10 pounds. May I suggest you put it on the floorboards of your car? As I said in the Video each 44 inch long stick presently weighs in at 27 pounds American.
The Bose is indeed approximately 2 inches smaller on each side and looks elegant with a nice metal cover over the drivers. With mine -- all 4 sticks will fit in a small car's back seat -- the bases lay flat on the floorboard -- and the mixer/amps/and eq's will ride in the front passanger seat. The 2 Woofer boxes (12 inch woofers) are 1 cubic foot each and just ride in the back seat as well. I didn't even need the trunk at all ! As I dont intend to slam them around- durability is not an issue.
P.S. I even saw a company that makes a Line Array for "Front of Stage" as a monitor 10 or 20 feet long that lays on the stage floor. Really small linear footprint that does not interfere with audiance sight lines. A tiny long wedge did the job!
IN THEORY; If I were a music store (which I am not) I could sell you a Crown amp - a Behringer Mixer -- A Cerwin Vega Woofer Cab(crossed over at 600 hz) and a Twin-31-Band-EQ and a Rolling Stand like they use for Karaoke TV, as well as a Hardytools-Line-Array-Stick for a speaker.
}}}Mixer= 31 band EQ= and AMP= all of which mount on tangs on the rolling stand. NO Patent Rights are infringed.
And probably better enclosures than I did. Bose cannot patent the USE TO WHICH a line array is used ++ Which is really the only new Idea Bose had with their Line Array. That is just Marketing!
Thanks again for watching the whole thing thru!
Hardytools (I will try singing thru It and recording the results in about 2 weeks)
gandsnut === Thanks for watching the whole thing through! Bose can hold a patent on the EQ they built theirs == And hold a Patent on the Power Amp base they put their stick in ++ and perhaps even patent the Drivers they choose to use, But the Line Array Concept is
in the realm of Free and Open Ideas and is being built for center channels for home theatre as well as in production with a miriad of companys for high end audio. They all use better speakers than I did, better tweeters than I did,
HardyTools: Thanks for documenting your PAS 'fake'. As Bose holds the patent rights on this design, any company who attempted to commercialize a fake would be hit with a law suit for infringment. I'm sure you understand that.
Us viewers hope you might record a session using these in a live music application; better, if you could arrange an "A vs. B" comparison of your system to a standard PA setup, that would be wonderful, even if on a cheap camcorder mic. Good work.
