That's an awful lot of argument and supposition about Shawn's weight when really the guy was just on massive doses of steroids to treat some other medical condition. Time is the enemy, smoking is the enemy. Weird-ass degenerative diseases are the enemy, cheeseburgers were not the problem.
because it comes more handy for those sclaes, especially in ascending manner : i did adopt this style of playing, and i do play it only with 3 fingers, even though at fisrt i used. It's really way more adapted to positions shifts like Shawn used to play
no i actually adressed something true...on YouTube almost all the guitar pentatonics explained are in the key of A or E...i expected more from Shawn Lane but i guess everyone dissapoints
actually the scales stay the same. the only thing that changes is the place you play them on the neck. if you want to know them in a different key, just move the patterns up or down
Reason for the thin gauge strings is due to psoriatic arthritis (easier to bend). His weight gain was because of the steroids used to treat the inflamation.
your comment didn't make it into my inbox, but are you serious? what's you're idea of a good tone, cannibal corpse? lol seriously, you have very poor taste in tone if you think this tone is horrible. shawn lane, eric johnson, guthrie govan, kiko loureiro, buckethead, marco sfogli, milan polak, rusty cooley, jason becker, john petrucci, michael romeo etc. are all great examples of guitarists with great tone.
@Fluffypopcicle no eric johnsons tone is awesome but shawn tries to rip off erics tone and he doesn't.cooley has horrible tone.srv has tone ,as does tony iommi, malcom young, eddie van halen has great tone also.shawn just tries to sound like johnson but does a horrible job of it.
wow, you really are an idiot. first of ll you have ZERO evidence to back up that bull shit claim and next of allan holdsworth has a MUCH more similar tone to shawn lane. tony lommi has a shit live tone, malcom young has a mediocre average tone, and cooley has a great tone. it just lets every note sound smooth and has tons of clarity. he is one of the only people that can get good tone from emg pickups. you know nothing.

Eric is way better then shawn.jeff beck has also sold a lot of instrumental records because he kicks ass.Rustys music is so bad he cant get a decent record deal,he is a great guy yes,but as far as music is concerned it;s not happening.Vai and satriani the same thing.
you're even dumber than i thought. i never meant that shawn lane came before allan, im saying that shawn got WAY more of his tone from allan not ej. as for calling shawn a musical midget you obviously to his music. eric johnson himself said he wished could solo as well as shawn did. go listen to esperanto, gray pianos flying not again, epilogue for lisa etc. and then try to say he isn't musical. rusty is an acquired taste, i won't argue about him. you fucking fail.
@themetalgod21 i agree rusty is a technical giant but shawn is most def not a musical midget. he just had alot of tunes where he experimented with dissonance and such, tones and sounds that one must look past to understand fully. lets stop arguing about guitar players and just accept that most of them are all pretty great and better than us and just enjoy their music!
@themetalgod21 You're handle is 'the metalgod.' By what dramatic irony do you even attempt to insult a musician like Shawn?
Here we have more evidence that metal is both destroying music by flooding it with homogeneity and filling the world's impressionable youth with all manner of tasteless frivolity. And that's coming from someone who used to be able associate with the genre.
@BroOfTheDead I'm familiar with the group. They're a lot more technical than most other (death) metal bands. Still, their vocalist is not talented in any way, shape, or form; they tend to overuse the bass pedals (for some reason metalheads can't seem to get over that); and they don't seem to understand a little thing we in the business call, 'consonance.'
That being said, Shawn Lane plays 18 nps on numerous recordings. I full-heartedly guarantee that Sami never even approaches those speeds.

1.MEDICINES(which shawn needed)!
2.NOT eating breakfast
3.If you dont sleep
4.Not Exercising
Get your facts straight before you even PLAN to make a statement!
as much of a shawn lane fan as i am, the laws of physics would show that he had to consume something in order to gain weight... law of conservation of matter.. matter cannot be created nor destroyed. so....in order to gain weight, one needs to consume things.. sorry its the truth!
@firstgearlead while you are Correct that in order gain weight food had to be consumed, The Law of conservation does Nothing to demonstrate How metabolism works and the physiological effects of stress, Steroids and dysfunctional metabolism. as a health care professional i can guarantee you that chronic sterio usage does promote buildup of adipose tissue on the face head and trunk, and there are a Number of studies out that demonstrate that stress causes your body to store energy
all of these medical studies you are talking about just make excuses for the fat people and how their body composition is not their fault. and that only makes sense considering the amount of Americans that are "Over weight" or "clinically obese". and whatever medical studies say, it doesn't negate the fact that fat people have eaten themselves to their fat state.. one's weight doesn't just double overnight. it's a lifestyle choice that many people don't decide to make.
@firstgearlead ok, first of all, you are correct in your basic assumption. If you eat more calories in a day than you burn, your body stores the extra energy as fat. this is 8th-9th grade science. However! there are a number of factors that can alter the mechanics of how, why and how how much energy is stored as fat. Probably the most important and least understand by the population at large is stress. Do a search here on you tube for the video, Stress: portrait of a killer
@firstgearlead ok, first of all, you are correct in your basic assumption. If you eat more calories in a day than you burn, your body stores the extra energy as fat. this is 8th-9th grade science. @firstgearlead Ok, first of all ,your basic assumption is correct. If you eat more calories in a day than you burn, You will store the extra energy as Fat. This is basic 8th grade science. However! there are several factors that can alter the physiological pathways that "normal" metabolism uses to manage food energy. Chronic steroid usage, thyroid dysfunctions and Most importantly, Stress. Consider the Possibility that maybe No one WANTS to be fat. Maybe, there are underlying problems.
or maybe, the medical society has developed a series of excuses that negate any accountability of America's predominantly "fat" culture. It's a lot easier to sell lazy people an excuse than it is to tell them that their weight and health is their own responsibility. Lazy people eat that shit up all day long. I have nothing against fat people, being fat, or adipose tissue I simply can't stand people who make excuses for themselves and victimize themselves to deter responsibility
@firstgearlead Ah, I think we are now arguing on the same side of the argument, I agree self determination is the key. Being responsible for yourself and your own life is the first principle of self development/wellness. if your fat your fat, if you wnt to change it then take the steps to do so. but, Obesity is a multi factorial problem, if it were as simple as 'just not eating as much' then we wouldn't have an epidemic in this country. It would be simple to fix.
@firstgearlead It's funny, because physics really doesn't have much to do with it in this case. This commen just shows your ignorance. Here is the first flaw in your argument: of course he had to consume things, as does everyone. Second, Shawn Lane was on corticosteroids as a treatment for his psoriadic arthritis. A major side effect of corticosteroids is hypothyroidism, increased serum cholesterol, etc. These can lead to weight gain due to a much slowed metabolism.
what's funnier is that the laws of physics apply universally. So, no, you may not discredit the law of conservation of matter just because it proves inconvenient for your argument.
@netminnow I never said the laws of physics dont apply. Of course it applies asshole. However, in his case he was one corticosteroids (I don't know which one specifically) to treat his condition. A side effect of many corticosteroids is weight gain. Obviously the laws of physics still apply, but what I am saying is that his metabolism was greatly disturbed by the medication. You must not understand much about biology, but the digestive system is very sensitive to chemicals taken in by the body.
@netminnow You must not understand what the digestive system is. It's the system of organs in the body that breaks down food, drink, medicine, etc taken in by the body and absorbs the nutrients, breaks down carbohydrates, digests proteins, etc. to create energy for the body. This process is catalyzed by thousands of enzymes produced by the thyroid, stomach, intestines, etc. In the case of corticosteroids, thyroid activity is greatly decreased, leading to decreased/ineffective food digestion.
@netminnow Obviously, youtube will not allow me to explain further, so if your small brain cannot wrap around this crash course in college freshman level biology, please feel free to use the bountiful resources the internet has to offer. In other words, fuck off. Have a nice day. Maybe next time do a little research before you run your mouth.
@firstgearlead The law of conservation of matter is defined as: the mass of a CLOSED SYSTEM will remain constant over time. The human body is absolutely not a closed system. The bodies of biological organisms are much more complex than simple closed systems. The basic principle applies, but it is not as black and white as you seem to think.
@firstgearlead You obviously did. The Law of the conservation of mass is the same as the law of the conservation of matter. Look it up. Again, before you run your mouth off to me do some research. Better yest, just go away.
actually no, they're not the same thing, any body with any physics knowledge can differentiate between MASS and MATTER, because they are, in fact, two separate ideas.
@firstgearlead "The law of conservation of mass or of matter, also known as the Lomonosov-Lavoisier law, states that the mass of substances in a closed system will remain constant, no matter what processes are acting inside the system. It is a different way of stating that though matter may change form, it can be neither created nor destroyed."
This is straight from the International Society for Complexity, Information, and Design website.
@ericmhanks Not that I really want to get involved in this pissing contest, but I think that most physicists would say that strictly speaking, inertial and gravitational mass are both properties of matter.
A lot of that sound has to do with his vibrato. Because of the way he bends he is actually sounding tones that we don't hear that often in western music. Kinda like what Derek Trucks does with the slide, or Steve Vai or Eric Johnson. You're right, it does sound amazing even though most of us just see him playing a plain ol' pentatonic scale.
He's playing A minor pentatonic spelled A-C-D-E-G. He starts each new position / form inverting the order. Same 5 notes just starting on G first then A then C, etc....and running them 2 octaves. A major pentatonic would be spelled A-B-C#-E-F#. What's cool is if you combine the minor and major pentatonic forms using the same pitch axis which in this case is A. Shawn, Steve Morse, Satch and many others utilize that style. That maybe the reason shawn is just saying key of "A". Rock on brothers!
Well, the key of A has three sharps. In this clip, there are no sharps played. However, in Shawn's (my hero)defense, you could consider this to be in the key of Am, the relative minor of the key of C... Check out tritonefasination's breakdown of the theory behind some of Shawn's stuff
According to two or more music books I have thats a A Minor pentatonic scale. It starts with fingering #5. The 1st root note he plays is on the 5th fret, 6th string.
it really does depend on the style. i typically like my G to be a little heavier because i play it a lot. super heavy strings sound good for strummers.
yeah, that's perfectly logical... put strings from another instrument on a guitar. why stop there? how about telephone pole wire? you got me good, huh? you know anything about tone?
you know anything about tone? "yea bro, fuckin, whatever i like sounds better." thats what you sound like. thin=twangy and easy to play, heavy=deeper/richer and not so easy to play. go home.
your cluttering my inbox @ this point. #1 i've mentioned "diff. app.s" 2 times before you. read and you will agree #2 bass strings aren't guitar strings and i was making a point to be as retarded as you with your comment. #3 filler words like bozo and desperate aren't necessarily debate attributes. #4 if you don't respond to this i will consider you a bigger man than i.

TotalKombatArts 10 months ago
@TotalKombatArts
all of these medical studies you are talking about just make excuses for the fat people and how their body composition is not their fault. and that only makes sense considering the amount of Americans that are "Over weight" or "clinically obese". and whatever medical studies say, it doesn't negate the fact that fat people have eaten themselves to their fat state.. one's weight doesn't just double overnight. it's a lifestyle choice that many people don't decide to make.
firstgearlead 10 months ago
@firstgearlead ok, first of all, you are correct in your basic assumption. If you eat more calories in a day than you burn, your body stores the extra energy as fat. this is 8th-9th grade science. However! there are a number of factors that can alter the mechanics of how, why and how how much energy is stored as fat. Probably the most important and least understand by the population at large is stress. Do a search here on you tube for the video, Stress: portrait of a killer

TotalKombatArts 9 months ago
@TotalKombatArts
or maybe, the medical society has developed a series of excuses that negate any accountability of America's predominantly "fat" culture. It's a lot easier to sell lazy people an excuse than it is to tell them that their weight and health is their own responsibility. Lazy people eat that shit up all day long. I have nothing against fat people, being fat, or adipose tissue I simply can't stand people who make excuses for themselves and victimize themselves to deter responsibility
firstgearlead 9 months ago
@firstgearlead Ah, I think we are now arguing on the same side of the argument, I agree self determination is the key. Being responsible for yourself and your own life is the first principle of self development/wellness. if your fat your fat, if you wnt to change it then take the steps to do so. but, Obesity is a multi factorial problem, if it were as simple as 'just not eating as much' then we wouldn't have an epidemic in this country. It would be simple to fix.
TotalKombatArts 9 months ago
@firstgearlead It's funny, because physics really doesn't have much to do with it in this case. This commen just shows your ignorance. Here is the first flaw in your argument: of course he had to consume things, as does everyone. Second, Shawn Lane was on corticosteroids as a treatment for his psoriadic arthritis. A major side effect of corticosteroids is hypothyroidism, increased serum cholesterol, etc. These can lead to weight gain due to a much slowed metabolism.
ericmhanks 9 months ago
@ericmhanks
what's funnier is that the laws of physics apply universally. So, no, you may not discredit the law of conservation of matter just because it proves inconvenient for your argument.
netminnow 9 months ago
@netminnow I never said the laws of physics dont apply. Of course it applies asshole. However, in his case he was one corticosteroids (I don't know which one specifically) to treat his condition. A side effect of many corticosteroids is weight gain. Obviously the laws of physics still apply, but what I am saying is that his metabolism was greatly disturbed by the medication. You must not understand much about biology, but the digestive system is very sensitive to chemicals taken in by the body.
ericmhanks 9 months ago
@netminnow You must not understand what the digestive system is. It's the system of organs in the body that breaks down food, drink, medicine, etc taken in by the body and absorbs the nutrients, breaks down carbohydrates, digests proteins, etc. to create energy for the body. This process is catalyzed by thousands of enzymes produced by the thyroid, stomach, intestines, etc. In the case of corticosteroids, thyroid activity is greatly decreased, leading to decreased/ineffective food digestion.
ericmhanks 9 months ago
@netminnow Obviously, youtube will not allow me to explain further, so if your small brain cannot wrap around this crash course in college freshman level biology, please feel free to use the bountiful resources the internet has to offer. In other words, fuck off. Have a nice day. Maybe next time do a little research before you run your mouth.
ericmhanks 9 months ago
@firstgearlead The law of conservation of matter is defined as: the mass of a CLOSED SYSTEM will remain constant over time. The human body is absolutely not a closed system. The bodies of biological organisms are much more complex than simple closed systems. The basic principle applies, but it is not as black and white as you seem to think.
ericmhanks 9 months ago
@ericmhanks
That's actually the law of conservation of MASS... did you fail high school physics?
firstgearlead 9 months ago
@firstgearlead You obviously did. The Law of the conservation of mass is the same as the law of the conservation of matter. Look it up. Again, before you run your mouth off to me do some research. Better yest, just go away.
ericmhanks 9 months ago
@ericmhanks
actually no, they're not the same thing, any body with any physics knowledge can differentiate between MASS and MATTER, because they are, in fact, two separate ideas.
firstgearlead 9 months ago
@firstgearlead "The law of conservation of mass or of matter, also known as the Lomonosov-Lavoisier law, states that the mass of substances in a closed system will remain constant, no matter what processes are acting inside the system. It is a different way of stating that though matter may change form, it can be neither created nor destroyed."
This is straight from the International Society for Complexity, Information, and Design website.
ericmhanks 9 months ago
@ericmhanks Not that I really want to get involved in this pissing contest, but I think that most physicists would say that strictly speaking, inertial and gravitational mass are both properties of matter.

Are there any strings out there ? XD lol

lol where are the strings?

He even makes the pentatonic scale played straight sound amazing. Incredible.
vampire28 3 years ago
A lot of that sound has to do with his vibrato. Because of the way he bends he is actually sounding tones that we don't hear that often in western music. Kinda like what Derek Trucks does with the slide, or Steve Vai or Eric Johnson. You're right, it does sound amazing even though most of us just see him playing a plain ol' pentatonic scale.
southboundtraveler 3 years ago
You're forgetting Jeff Beck, he plays with a lot of quarter tones and shit.
D4athPanda 2 years ago
when he plays it up to speed what tempo is that???? I wanna know how far I have to go.
fjord2141 3 years ago
He's playing A minor pentatonic spelled A-C-D-E-G. He starts each new position / form inverting the order. Same 5 notes just starting on G first then A then C, etc....and running them 2 octaves. A major pentatonic would be spelled A-B-C#-E-F#. What's cool is if you combine the minor and major pentatonic forms using the same pitch axis which in this case is A. Shawn, Steve Morse, Satch and many others utilize that style. That maybe the reason shawn is just saying key of "A". Rock on brothers!
plectrist 3 years ago 3
Is is just me, or is this technically in the key of C?
alabaster07 3 years ago
how so?
hackhead123 3 years ago
Well, the key of A has three sharps. In this clip, there are no sharps played. However, in Shawn's (my hero)defense, you could consider this to be in the key of Am, the relative minor of the key of C... Check out tritonefasination's breakdown of the theory behind some of Shawn's stuff
alabaster07 3 years ago
in a major theres three sharps but in a minor theres zilch, which i assume is what hes playing in
hackhead123 3 years ago
According to two or more music books I have thats a A Minor pentatonic scale. It starts with fingering #5. The 1st root note he plays is on the 5th fret, 6th string.
TheWhiteBandit 3 years ago
actually he starts off on the G for the first one, he does 5th fret sixth string second
hackhead123 3 years ago
yeah ,very interesting.....
what i have always called the 5th position he calls the first..my first position in A is his second..ahh,,so thats his secret! :)
jbrianfehr 3 years ago
You're right its C/Am, pentatonic scales are kind of ambiguous though.
vampire28 3 years ago
Just about. Cmajors relative minor is Aminor But A PENTATONIC minor only has 5 notes as opposed to 7(8 with the octave) in a major/minor scale.

The thinner the stings easier and faster to play
666wrathchild 3 years ago 2
and that equals less tonal capacity and being CHEAP!
DRGasMoney 3 years ago
haha lol
i perfer 10's
its good for standerd and drop D(even tho i hardly tune to drop d)
and i use 11's for 1 whole step down or 2 :P
666wrathchild 3 years ago
it really does depend on the style. i typically like my G to be a little heavier because i play it a lot. super heavy strings sound good for strummers.
DRGasMoney 3 years ago
so the thicker the better right?
then use strings as thick as a bass on your guitar...that'll get em...moron...
AgentBloc 3 years ago
yeah, that's perfectly logical... put strings from another instrument on a guitar. why stop there? how about telephone pole wire? you got me good, huh? you know anything about tone?
DRGasMoney 3 years ago
tone? you've shown us nothing...
AgentBloc 3 years ago
bass strings are simply alot thicker than guitar strings, but the same fundamental string...it's not like putting strings from a harp on a guitar...
telephone pole wire? some tone...
you should have quit while you were ahead bozo...
AgentBloc 3 years ago
thinner strings sound better than fat greasy obese strings...
AgentBloc 3 years ago
you know anything about tone? "yea bro, fuckin, whatever i like sounds better." thats what you sound like. thin=twangy and easy to play, heavy=deeper/richer and not so easy to play. go home.
DRGasMoney 3 years ago
Boy are you desperate...
thin=singing open tone, heavy=thick, stuffy tone...go to sleep.
AgentBloc 3 years ago
bottom line, thinner and thicker strings sound better or worse for different applications...
AgentBloc 3 years ago 2
your cluttering my inbox @ this point.
DRGasMoney 3 years ago
your considerations are obsolete...
words like bozo and desperate are suitable for your irresponsibilities...
so, the joke's on you moron...
