  • I think they played live with pre recorded background vocals. Its clearly live but the chorus has more vocals then people on stage. Queen is my fav bands and im not doggin them...it is what it is. The piano kept playing after Freddy stood up as well. It was live with pre recorded stuff. Cool as hell though.

  • Those sweet memories of mine are back again... in Oct. 2007!!!

  • Qué rayos le pasa a la persona que no le gustó??!!!

  • Alguien sabe porque estaban descalzos?

  • ok so they're miming here (1:19 , Freddie clearly doesn't say 'yeah'), but it's also different to the ADATR version, so did they re-record it specifically for this performance? I'm confused!!

Still awesome though, by the way.

  • whoever disliked this should get his head examined!

  • sing me to sleep Freddie ... :) <3 <3 <3

  • why on earth is he not wearing that tiny cycling shorts?

  • love love love this song :) not as much as I love freddie though

  • a singing angel dressing in white...

  • here, and in some studio recording Bryan use a money for playng, not a pick XD

  • @MikeHRS

Brian is actually known for playing with a sixpence, a coin he recently had specially made for him since they no longer exist.

  • 1:42 roger coming in, so good!

  • this song is beautiful and freddie sings it beautiful. love him , love queen!!!

  • Best rock and roll band of the 20th century. They understood what real music was, and they wrote it and played it and shared it. The only regret is that this genius collaboration was cut short at 20 years. We all wanted more.

  • Best Band ever!

  • See these guys in the video?

    They're my heroes.

  • Oh my brian may is amazing

  • Roger is amazing. And Brian's solo... Love It! ;D

  • Absolutely fanstastic. Miss you Freddie x

  • On this version, Roger sings the part sung by Mike Stone on the record. Brian's solo here is beautiful, and John do a great bass line! :D Freddie has an excellent vocal shape.

  • @FabioQueenFan you're saying that is not roger singing the 'hey boy' bit in the song? really, it does sound like him?

  • @Alishhh4 In the original version, on "A Day At The Races" and "Greatest Hits" albums, the part 'hey boy' was singing by Mike Stone, Queen producer at the time of recording.

  • only 1 dislike the world maybe isnt endin :/

  • @killdoser123 Whoever dislikes Queen should put their money where their mouth is!!! Haaah!!!

  • Queen still Rocks...love so many of their songs rip FM

  • Now this mah boi. Is a classic nutin betetr than the 70s :D

  • Fantastic!! One of the few good songs of 1977 in a chart full of crap, they were a breath of fresh air!!

  • This is definitely different to the studio version yet also mimed. When did they record it?

  • It looks mimed, this is top of the pops. They make everyone mime. Look at nirvana's performance at this same show. They tried to make it obvious that it was all mimed except for vocals.

  • haha...freddie's singing: when i'm not with you, think of me always..*john deacon suddenly appears at the left* looove you, looove you...

  • queen <3<3<3

  • I love this band so very much. Especially this song. ...

  • no matter how many times I put this vid on, I still think.. phew, they were damn good! (understatement of the year?) what a great band. still Brilliant!

  • this shit never gets old. Queen Is the best band ever .. who dares to doubt it is just a cheap bitch with no idea about music

  • @d3vjak yeah I agree

  • God, I think I am in love with Rog's voice. I mean listen to that raspy husky voice at 1:42 , and tell me this man isn't amazing !

  • is there like a best of the top of the pops dvd?

  • Btw Brian looks like a fucking stud

  • Lol awesome song....even though i keep forgetting hes talking about a guy

  • @killermel23 ahahahah right....but u can always sing that to a girl ;)

  • thats SOOO not live!

  • I like freddie's suit in this one!

  • my guess is that this ain't top of the pops

  • I will pay the bill you taste the wine

    Catchy

  • I love his voice it is just so remarkable...queen rocks;)-

  • This is LIVE?! Unbelieveable.

  • @MrsRhythmNation No it's not live. Nobody sang live on TOTP. But even if they were singing live it would be just as amazing. :)

  • @iHeartHeathLedger May not be live but in that case it's a pre-recording (done in an hour or so, prior to the show) so that's still pretty damn great in my books.

  • @MrsRhythmNation That's why I said it was still amazing. I'm not saying anything negative about them. They could do anything and I would still think the sun shines out of Freddie's ass.

  • I sooo love this song, ever since it came out. It's so full of double entandres. Not meaning homosexual but simply great lyrics. GREAT SONG, great guitar, great band. always makes me smile, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9, bing !!! lol

  • Watcha doin' tonight, hey boy? :)

  • Barber Shop Queen

  • The only perfect band.... music is not a human creativion is just perfect!!

  • Queen was last of the good bands.

  • lovely song

  • I really wish they showed Freddie's piano-playing more, like a close-up, you know? I could sit for hours and watch his fingers work like that. (:

Also, at around 2:10, Brian shakes his head; perhaps he hit the wrong note or something?

  • I love how at 2:07 Brian May shakes his head like "ah man that was bad."

    Really? Are you kidding me?

  • He is his harshest critic...

  • @blaze0358

Haha, I noticed that also. It's alright, he's still a great guitar player.

Freddie Mercury was a great singer. The comment below yours has the evidence. AtiaGal. 1:45 - 1:52

  • @blaze0358 i know right!! it cause hes a perfectionist and anything less than what is in his mind and what he wants it to sound like, isnt good enough!! lmao gotta LOVE him tho!! ;)

  • 1:45 - 1:52

    makes the different for me

    AMAZING

  • That's my favorite part too. xD

He sings it so much better in this than in the recorded one.

  • @MrSpockify

How is this one different? i thougt this was playback? ..or are they playing another version? hardly know the song really

  • @PowerRedBull it's a prerecorded version, especially for this show!If you don't believe it's a playback, just look at how the volume of his voice doesn't change when he moves his mouth away from the mic and also, you can still hear a piano playing when he has left it!But I think they always used the playback on this show..I mean it's not only Queen..

  • @porock21gr this is an amazing version, even though it's sort of mixed with the basic track and some new prerecorded stuff. In the beginning it sounds like a straight playback, then it has some small differences here and there that are very noticeable if you are used to the album version.

  • the guitar solo its just greeeeeeeeeeeat

  • stupenda-beautiful!!! =)

  • Ok, so what is the deal with the very poorly fitting outfit Freddie has on??? The sleeves are way too long? His style is generally much better than this?? Did TOTP dictate his wardrobe also? This just does not look like something Freddie would pick out to wear.

  • Hmm. I don't know. I think it suits him quite nicely ;)

  • Ok, I see your point, there really is not anything that would not look good on Freddie ;) lol. he is adorable-always!!

  • So true! :D

  • One thing for sure that leads me to believe that some of it is pre-recorded is that you can hear separate percussion at 2:15. (tempo blocks & chimes/triangle) Could Roger have maintained a persistant beat AND hit the other percussion? Although, at the end when Freddie gets up, the piano stops. Very hard to figure out, but fantastic nonetheless!

  • This IS pre-recorded. A playback for this TV show. I like this record more that the album version. At least the baginning is 100 better.

  • super thanks

  • By Brian's head shake, something did go amiss at 2:07. But who cares; it was a stellar performance. Brian obviously is a perfectionist. If he didn't do that gesture, I wouldn't even have noticed. I think Queen's music is the equivalent to Mozart with the impact they have had on music history. 200+ years from now, Queen's music will still be enjoyed and appreciated--they are that good! Simply the best ever!

  • Very much win

  • 2:07- He fucked something up! i suppose

  • Nah dude, alot of times artist will make their solos sound totally different in live. Led Zeppelin does that with almost every song. If you listen to Van Halens Eruption live it sounds way different.

  • if he did,he fucked it up very well!!

  • They re-recorded this version of the song to mime along to, none of it's live, just look how far away Freddie is from the microphone in some parts, while the the vocals stay at the same volume.

  • I think the lead vocals, Roger's line and Brian's solo are live. Maybe John's bass too, not sure though.

  • I think its live with a backing track also.

    Guitar solo is deffo live.

Freddie can be heard to say thank you at the end. Vocals different from recorded track.

This is Queen on top top form....and its wonderful.

  • Thats because the original guitar solo is two tracks played together. He'd need another set of hands to pull that one off! Lol

  • The way it's sung here is different then the playback. This is live. They're so great that u would think it's playback but it's not

  • don brian es una de las poquísimas cosas q hace latir este mango podrido.

  • GENIUS!!!!!!!!!!

  • esto es oro en musica

  • Freddie's best serenade ever!!

Brian wrote the melody at Freddie's request. Queen was such a collaboration, despite the virtuosoty of all four of them. Lyrics, voice, bass, guitar(!), drums and percussion, and not the least of all- the production! Holy crap!

If there is a heaven, Freddie is up there now singing and diggin with all the angels... i'd give almost anything to see that!

  • @xyaqua

Brian didn't write the melody, this song is entirely Freddie's composition.

  • No! Vocal is live too...

  • no, it isn't.. it's all playback I don't care about that, I just want to know why there are two studio versions of this song? it's simply perfecT!

  • hoho!! i was rong, guitar and roger vocals are live!

  • Playback. Only the guitar is live!

  • freddie's voice is heavenly

  • Can any answer this ?

I think the solo is amazing, but around2:07-2:09, guitar genius Brian May gives a face that he might've had a miss-step in his solo or messed up a little bit. He also nods his head like he might've made a little error. To me it sounds perfect, but i am not a guitarist nor do i know Brian's May work. Does he mess up or miss a note? I know this was on a live show & don't know how different this version is from the original. I mean not a big deal, but always wondered...

  • @bappichulo

He plays a version of his solo that has been optimized for 1 guitar. I think he had to use about 8 layers on the original track, just for the guitar harmonics. This version is however, kick-ass!

There is only one word to describe Queen = Perfect!

  • @bappichulo Masters make mistakes, too. But they never skip a beat. That's part of the mastery: recovering instantly from errors without missing the beat. He made quite a few errors, actually, if you want to get technical. Muted some keys. But nonetheless, his craft is nothing short of masterful. Little "errors" like these add depth and richness, in my opinion. Unlike the loops found in today's almost-sterile pitch-perfection.

  • Neither. I believe, on looking down at his mirrored 'axe', May fleetingly caught a glimpse of his ludicrous hairdo and shook his head in quiet - though entirely justifiable - dismay.

  • The video is from Top Of The Pops, but I believe Kesu1990 swapped the audio to the song from their album. It may be that in the video Brian May hit a wrong note, but we're not listening to the same audio as that version. Did that answer your question?

  • love this song, video, album, singer, guitarist, band...

  • nice to see the greco get an airing, and not a bad one either..and its good to have a differnt version of this great song

  • love his moves..2:46..

  • @nhadz16 I agree, they are just wonderful !

  • I've got a different version of the song at Myspace. You can get there if you click a link in my Youtube channel's profile

  • Comment removed

  • my question is ,as you seem to be a Queen fan, have you any notion that FreddieMercury ever wore a wig during his career???Ive read very little about Queen thogh Ive read a bio. on BrianMay and can play 4 Queen songs on guitar

  • Brian's solo is so amazing on this record. I really love Queen. Best band ever to excist if you ask me :)

  • Brian May is the best guitarist ever. I learned to play by him and Tony Iommi.

  • @Surfbat45

Haha no actually Yngwie Malmsteen is the best guitar player ever.

  • @Drizzt914 dude. yngwie is awesome I admit but he doesn't have that mass appeal like Brian May. I don't think it's all about shredding.

  • @Surfbat45 yeah right prove it

  • Rogers and Freddies voice goes so well together. Amazing band never ever to be forgotten.

  • ya great live too thats what was so great.

  • He does a good job - Mike Stone sings that bit on the original

  • He could play the piano with no hands. That's talented!

  • I always think of Oscar Wilde when I hear this song. ;)

  • and omg, I love Roger's hair ^^

  • such a sweet song <3

  • Freddie is singing endeed, and Brian is really playing, just drums and bass have a support.

  • Freddie is not singing its playback, they recorded this version in studio just for top of the pops (its different from the version off the album)

  • Oh...seems so real...I honestly believed Freddie was singing just because some little differences from album version.

  • They're the best!!

  • It dosn't matter if there is a playback,it's still pretty good!!!!!!!!!

  • But Top of the Pops doesn't allow playback. Or atleast it didn't. I'm pretty sure that Queen could have pulled some strings.

  • They just sound GREAT, anywayz, they only do playback after the guiar solo. you can realise this because the sound quality changes and even the chorus can't be sang that good LIVE

  • Yeah, there's some playback in there. Notice how Freddie's standing up at the end, away from the piano, yet it's still playing. Also, the applause at the end is from a different recording. Or maybe this was played live, but for video release it was fixed up witht the album recording.

  • they're not lip-synching, some parts are a little different. They're just insane live.

  • I think they are Lip-Syncing but only because this lush arrangement would not be possible without multitracking. They were however a fantastic live band. They simply rearranged the songs to accommodate a live setting and also used recorded backing tracks.

  • I agree, several parts are pre-recorded, but Freddie singing is most definitely live, several parts are different than the album.

  • It was common back then to prerecord the backing track and then do the vocals live on TV. TV studios back then weren't set up properly for good live sound.

  • ever watched queen at live aid 1985 they are still considered to have put on the best live gig ever in rock

  • though it may sound recorded, i doubt they would lip sync. I mean they are playing instruments along, and indeed there were some small parts which were different. I guess they're just talented :)

  • they must be one of the best live bands of all time, i wish i was at that concert at wembley... =/

  • you know your music their live gig at live aid 1985 is still conidered the best

  • Is it possible that they recorded this song especially for this event? It sounds too good to be true(seriously).

  • that's playback!!listen to the original song..it's the same..

  • no it's different maby the coro is same, but any part is different.

My favorite song, fredy a genius!!!

  • thats not the original Red Special

  • hey manbiteswog he wrote this to tell about his love when he has a boyfriend or girlfriend i forget.

for ex: at 0:30 to 0:36 he tells about his morning the alarm goes off he wakes up he tries to have a good morning by putting on his charms and there u go.

  • how the fuck did mercury write this?! awesome peice of music and songwriting

  • He wrote more complicated stuff

  • excelente version, me gusta casi tanto como la version original. y lo mejor de todo es que me la presento el maestro cristobal.

    GRANDE FREDDIE

  • hetetetetetete hetetetetetete

    Chris Waddle

  • !!!Chris Waddle,,eth eth eth etheth ethethetheth lol

  • hetetetetetetetete hetetetetetete

    sausage factory.

  • Muy buena version!

    Viva QUEEN !!!

  • makes my hair stand on end everytime.....after 25 years i still cant get a guitar to sound like brians.....godbless you guys...x

  • Queen=a class act.

  • "I've a dream, the dream of sweet elusion..." - if I make a with it will be OLNY one: to see the REAL concert of QUEEN with real LIVE singing of "king" Fr. Mercury!!!

  • The majority of artists mimed on top of the pops - esp in those days, it didn't mean they were bad singers, the very fact that they appeared on the show and Queens record sales and popularity to this day show speaks for itself. The miming was a policy of the producers of the show, not the artists who appeared on them.

  • If you watch a live show from Queen you can see that they plays your ass of so shut your fucking mouth... You couldn't get the popularity and the respect that Queen has earned from hard work if it was tossed in you ugly face! And stop using caps, like it would make your opinion worth something more than the shit it is.

  • "Você não entende merda nenhuma de música."

Now, translate this portuguese sentence to your great english...

  • I hate the version on the greatest hits album, the volume levels are mixed terribly. Its a shame because I love this song

  • It's this version on Greatest Hits, too!

  • Is the bass playback, or is it just the singing?

  • NOT LIVE, BUT PLAYBACK!

  • Queen never sang live on TOP OF THE POPS.

  • I KNOW IT!!!!!!!!!! The people who saw Queen on Top of the Pops, HATE Queen now. SORRY FOR MY ENGLISH!

  • Really? Well, I don't hate Queen now.

  • Like it because it's playback?! The bass and the singing is playback! What did you mean?!

  • What he means is that this is very clearly not a live performance. However, you can plenty of Queens actual live performance here on youtube and they're fucking awesome. So even though this particular performance is synced, Queen is still amazing.

  • Its Top of the Pops. A Singles show, evey Friday for years and years. Its world famous, despite every band being made to lipsync!

  • I love, love, LOVE this song!!!!:-)

  • A great live off the floor version of this song, at a time when lip synching was de rigeure. Queen absolutely loathed lip synching, especially Roger.

  • There's another version of this, where his voice goes a bit higher and stuff and the guitar solo's different somewhat. Does anyone have it?

  • That's the album version. I'd gladly send it to you in a message.

  • Oh, well I have that version, on CD, I was just wondering if anyone had a video with it. Thanks anyway. :)

  • John contributed so heavily to create Queen bombastic sound with these beautiful basslines.

  • always the bassist that is the mos important part of a functional rock band such as queen, that gets little reconition for their work and their input into the band which is usually far greater than the rest of the members put togeather as with the case with john pauljones from led zep list one insterment that he could not play???!!!! hard eh he could play anything and play it like a pro could bearly play at his best, madoline keybord, piano(and still play bass notes with the pedals!!!) etc

  • en el minuto 1:42 canta mi amado roger!!!!!!!!!,ay,te amo,m encanta esta cancion, larga vida a la reina y que muera la musica basura que suena actualmente, solo algunos se salvan d ser basura

  • Brain May is one of the most UNDERRATED guitar players in the history of music. The solo in this song fu*king beautiful.

  • I totally agree.Actually,he's the best pop/rock guitarplayer, imagine Queen songs without his sound and style.Yngwee Malmsteen tried it on a song but played too many notes.

    Brian never did that.

    Burnsmay

  • exactly like the record

  • Tremendo!!!! increible performance!

  • this song is just AMAZING!!! i also love the guitar solo. 5 stars. NICE JOB ON THIS VIDEO.
