favorite character. i disagree with lukazila if anything the pacific is more personal and shows the war thru the eyes of 3 different marines. one who dies, john basilone. one whos wounded, robert leckie, and one who survives without a scratch but emotionally will never be the same, eugene sledge. i enjoyed pacific more than B.o.b. but still give b.o.b. 5 starss hands down
I dont see why people compare this series with band of brothers. BoB is a more personal story where most of the characters are described. While this is just war. Although, BoB was my prefered until I saw the last 3-4 episodes of this. The Pacific is sort of a love story in the end huh?
its great how snafu goes progressively from bad to good. That the more hes in the middle of it, the calmer and more sane he seems to be. Sledge, on the other hand, is the exact opposite.

PART#2: "someone else" emerged. That "new man" scared each other and ourselves. But SNAFU wallows in it. He has gone beyond caring, and given himself (and everyone around him) up for dead. We Marines fearfully watched each other (and ourselves) slide down that same slope in Nam, unable to stop it. Our personalities faded daily and (CONTD)

I don't think he was crazy to the point of being ineffective, he still fought well and looked out for his men. He was just worn out mentally from the war.

@RasMajnouni this snafu would probably kick some ass after he got said blanket party. he was an outstanding marine and knew when to get serious. he is a salty marine who saw action before the new guys came, so he can mess with the boots. Snafu was a great marine, in combat and outside of it. I'd much rather have snafu in my squad during a firefight than some of the guys from BoB. Not saying they weren't great fighters, mind you.
@RasMajnouni Not really. SNAFU was a PFC, who outranked the newly arriving Pvts. You wouldn't dare risk a court-martial by striking a senior Marine. Marines harass each other constantly anyway ~ it toughens them up mentally, and you want your buddy to be as tough as possible because your life often depends on him. Merriel Shelton (SNAFU) was real (like all the rest of these named characters were) and survived the war. He's still my favorite character in this series. Great acting by Rami Malek.

@jmach6677 No no ~ this is real stuff. Nearly every event depicted in this series really happened. Each named character was real, and some of them were still living when this series was being made ~ they met the actors who were portraying them. The series was made from the WWII diaries of several Marines who served in these units (1st and 5th Marines). They published their diaries after the war, and we're finally getting around to making a movie of them. No gimmicks here ~ Great work all around.
@DatPicksburghGuy In Sledge's diary, he relates that when they got to Guadalcanal, these very oil drums were sent to them as their fresh water supply. The missed oil inside each drum made most of them sick, teaching them the lesson of doing the very best job on every assignment they were given.
@FLSHBK1 Okay, number one, Sledge wrote With the Old Breed, a memoir based on notes he kept in a pocket-sized New Testament. He didn't have a diary. Number two, Sledge and his fellow Marines had to drink out of the oil drums and yes, most of them got sick from it, but ON PELELIU where there was hardly any water and it averaged 100+ degrees everyday

PART#4: who fought thru this hell in 1942-1945. If you had not done what you did, our generation would be speaking Japanese today. PART#3: for doing such a wonderful, convincing job playing this role. His performance has had a profound effect on me, and remains one of the highlights of my experience in this series. My old Corps buddy Dale A. Dye (another Nam vet) served as Technical Advisor for this series, and made it completely believable. Thanks for putting convincing faces to such Marine legends as Chesty Puller, John Basilone, Gy Elmo Haney and others. My longest SALUTE to the actual Marines (CONTD:)

PART#2: "someone else" emerged. That "new man" scared each other and ourselves. But SNAFU wallows in it. He has gone beyond caring, and given himself (and everyone around him) up for dead. He knows he won't go home, and lives minute to minute, awaiting the round which will liberate him from the hell which his life has become. SNAFU became my favorite character in this Mini Series. Altho he's not intended to be the hero, he was mine. I wish I could meet Rami Malek in person to thank him (CONTD):

PART#1: This was a wonderful mini series, perhaps the best I've seen. I was familiar with SNAFU ( PFC Merriel Shelton) from Eugene Sledge's great diary, wherein he called SNAFU "the most dangerous man I ever knew". SNAFU has seen too much combat, and has slid down to the bottom of that slippery slope then called battle fatigue (PTSD). We Marines fearfully watched each other (and ourselves) slide down that same slope in Nam, unable to stop it. Our personalities faded daily and (CONTD)

They put out a episode called the Pacific and call it a armed forces equivalent of B o B Then they mix it with a 20th century , Jerry springier generation generation kind of youth and call it the Pacific. @RasMajnouni this snafu would probably kick some ass after he got said blanket party. he was an outstanding marine and knew when to get serious. he is a salty marine who saw action before the new guys came, so he can mess with the boots. Snafu was a great marine, in combat and outside of it. I'd much rather have snafu in my squad during a firefight than some of the guys from BoB. Not saying they weren't great fighters, mind you.

@RasMajnouni Not really. SNAFU was a PFC, who outranked the newly arriving Pvts. You wouldn't dare risk a court-martial by striking a senior Marine. Marines harass each other constantly anyway ~ it toughens them up mentally, and you want your buddy to be as tough as possible because your life often depends on him. Merriel Shelton (SNAFU) was real (like all the rest of these named characters were) and survived the war. He's still my favorite character in this series. Great acting by Rami Malek.

@jmach6677 No no ~ this is real stuff. Nearly every event depicted in this series really happened. Each named character was real, and some of them were still living when this series was being made ~ they met the actors who were portraying them. The series was made from the WWII diaries of several Marines who served in these units (1st and 5th Marines). They published their diaries after the war, and we're finally getting around to making a movie of them. No gimmicks here ~ Great work all around.

@DatPicksburghGuy In Sledge's diary, he relates that when they got to Guadalcanal, these very oil drums were sent to them as their fresh water supply. The missed oil inside each drum made most of them sick, teaching them the lesson of doing the very best job on every assignment they were given.

@FLSHBK1 Okay, number one, Sledge wrote With the Old Breed, a memoir based on notes he kept in a pocket-sized New Testament. He didn't have a diary. Number two, Sledge and his fellow Marines had to drink out of the oil drums and yes, most of them got sick from it, but ON PELELIU where there was hardly any water and it averaged 100+ degrees everyday
