I hope this isn't a stupid question. Why is it that, in the sentence "j'ai fait du sport", the 'du' becomes 'de' in negating it? Why shouldn't it be "je n'ai pas fait du sport"?
@SeishinNoIro that is a rule with negation. any time you have un, une, des, du, de la, or de l' right after a negation, it becomes "de" or "d' " so for example, J'ai un sandwich. It will become Je n'ai pas de sandwich.
