It means literally " vassals of the sun " , and the meaning is that the field workers in other centuries were called like that , because they had to work the whole day exposed to the tropical sun .

NO, they are called "Vassals of the Sun" because most afrovenzuelan celebrations are around St. John's Baptist's day on June 24th, close to the Summer Solstice on June 23rd, in which the sun is in the highest point in the sky. This is because african peoples used to adore divinities related to the sun. After Christianization they continued to celebrate those days but with catholic images instead.
