  • I respect what anyone believes as long as they treat my belief with respect also.

  • I wish I was as articulate as Fry. I enjoy his view on the subject as well. I've been agnostic since about 17, and I was Christian before that since I was a small child. It just gives you even more to think about.

I like the correlation between knowledge and belief in god. The smarter we get as a whole, the less we believe in god. Which makes you think about how places that pride themselves on intelligence, tend to have fewer religious ties. All quite interesting.

  • Atheism that is not born of skepticism is far more arrogant and presumptuous than any religion every could be.

  • Why does it have to be a monotheism? Doesn't this guy study up on eastern religion? Why can't it be a panentheism? That makes much more sense to me.

  • Has his nose always looked like that?

  • absolutely Stephen!! :)

  • 1:49

What worm is he talking about? does anybody know?

  • @mihaimoldo Some sort of nematode I think.

  • Not sure I understand his reasoning for many gods. And atheists and humanist probably will love to flame this comment. But its like saying there is different kind of electricity. But I would like to throw out a thought. Look at god in a scientific sence. God is energy. Energy is everywhere. Why is there cancer if there is god? Thats like say why does energy have postitive and negative. Religion describe there is god and the devil. its a constant fight between good energy and negativ energy.

  • @mnemonicn Bah, humbug. There is only energy. You might as wee say there are bad and good electrons.

  • So true. People think they need a supernatural power because they don`t see the beauty and completness of nature/evolution itself or fear the truth of fatality or the fact that they are just another species-it´s vanity and fear that leeds to superstition and religion-it is here and now live your life and enjoy the moment in poetry, music, arts, relationships, frindships, love, debate, intellectual challenge, science, sports, food,...you choose-don`t expect rewards from any god in the afterlife

  • I just LOVE that moment when he says 'Where's your god now?'

  • I agree with his views about possible God(s). God(s) certainly isn't consistent and it is definitely not "all-loving." I do disagree with him about monotheistic beliefs to be horrible, though. I don't really see why monotheism couldn't be exactly what he described in polytheism. All in all, he is certainly a wise man, but I am slightly disappointed that he has apparently closed his mind off to the possibility of God(s). To each their own.

  • @GregorioXII I think this is a fairly common misconception held about atheists by theists and deists alike. The vast majority of atheists I know are not closed to the possibility of God(s); We're not closed to the possibility of virtually anything. We merely demand sufficient evidence. When talking deity, the evidence had better be extraordinary. If "God" wants us, "he" just has to show us the proverbial money.

  • It's so strange the way I disagree with Fry on this subject. For me, if there are any Gods there can only be one. There is no purpose if there isn't that one. I could imagine we could think deeply together on the subject.. that would be nice.

  • Stephen Fry is a wise man!! Funny and wise!

  • God belief is all about picking and choosing. Even the God concept is multifold, so that one can choose what better absolute attribute justifies an irrational claim.

  • Stephen Fry is such a warm and interesting person that it's difficult for me to understand how anyone could possibly dislike him.

  • there is no god, we all know that deep down, when someone truly frees them self of religion it is a great feeling.

  • @cptmuska This is the most derpy comment I've read all day.

  • @GregorioXII religion is a plague, Christianity is the most destructive thing ever created by man, it has killed more people than Communism and restricts humans basic human natures.

  • @cptmuska Oh, you were trolling! Phew, good to know. You had me worried for a second there.

  • @cptmuska.. you're right - the bishops invented mustard gas, landmines, high explosives, agent orange, napalm, the flame thrower, cluster bombs - and the atomic bomb. And while we're at it, it was the village vicars who filled the ocean with plastic, raised noise pollution in the seas to unbearable levels, wiped out the rain forest, and tested deadly plagues on the mentaly ill. How were they allowed to get away with it?

  • @GregorioXII liked for the work 'derpy', That's getting used.

  • I often wonder about people who make a distinction between monotheism and polytheism. It comes down to terminology. What the Greeks called a "god" we call a Hallmark Trademark (Cupid). What the Greeks might call a "demigod" the Norse call a "hero" (Beowulf). Fry's wrong... the really ghastly thing isn't monotheism, it's our (species-wide) NEED to label things in order to more easily dismiss them.

  • I wish I could have said it like he does when those religious people came with flyers at my door.

  • what confuses me about the Atheist Movement is that I'm not sure who I'm supposed to send my money to?

...that was a joke by the way.

  • @GrunGrauWeiss hahaha wish i could hear someone on stand up say that

  • People want there to be a god, that's why I'm sure 'god' is a human invention. Also, as Stephen says, troughout history you can see the changes in what people call god.

  • personification, we think we are special...WRONG

  • you have to account for bone cancer in children

  • True that.

  • I agree with this genius man, because I believe everything good or bad is for benefit. And thinking about the-worm-and lamb thing...that's just the result of sin, dudes. The world is crappy, and we have to take the good AND bad when contemplating God 'cause, well, He's not just this sweet Spirit people expect him to be. He can be judgmental and disciplinary...to keep all of us in line, 'cause He loves us.

  • @BNL07604 sounds like a stalker and a serial killer wearing your intestines as a bow tie because he "loves you" so much o.O

  • 1:56 I just can't stop listening to this

  • a little poem.

    I would almost say

    if only I were gay.

    my thoughts now roam

I might be cursed with straightness.

this is what Stephen makes me think of, a great entertainer, a great mind, a great man, a great human being.

  • @yummyotter45

Please keep your preaching for your own channel.

  • @freetheworldof Oh wow, no freedom of speech huh. Yes, you atheists are a vast improvement to religious idiots. Want to know the difference between an atheist and a christian? Christians have an excuse for being stupid.

  • @yummyotter45 Don’t agree with um but think its low to – there comment there entitled to speak there belief,They have not been rude or offensive

  • I agree with him, but for none of the same reasons. Gods would have to be human like? Thats silly. Any god\gods would likely be something very hard to comprehend and nothing at all human about them.

  • @norniron7

What is really sad, is that until you watched this video, you liked Stephen Fry. And yet he hasn't changed, he still entertains in exactly the same way as before.

I wonder, do you apply the same criteria for deciding which entertainers you like/dislike, based on their political views?

  • @freetheworldof your right i do base what i watch on their views, i dont think this is a bad thing really :)

  • @norniron7 I am not saying that it is a bad thing, simply that it is absurd. So you watch a program/film with say actor X. You thoroughly enjoy the program/film, particularly because of actor X. You then discover that his/her political view differs from your own. Has their performance changed? Obviously not. Does it change the fact that you enjoyed the program/film? Again, obviously not. So there is no logical reason to stop watching actor X again.

  • @norniron7 It is a safe assumption to say, that on every program/film you will find someone with a different viewpoint than yours on religion etc. By your logic, you would eventually end up never watch anything! As I said, absurd!

  • @freetheworldof call me absurd then. Honestly TV is a waste of time anyway. Good day sir bb ^_^

  • @norniron7

I should point out, I did not call you absurd. I simply said that your comment was absurd.

  • @norniron7 lol you dont like people because their beliefs aren't the same as yours that is sad.

  • @ewenson111 haha you amuse me little troll

  • @ewenson111

Of all the possible reasons in the world not to like someone, beliefs come pretty close to the top. The only thing I can think of that would be more important than belief would be action.

It seems absurd to criticize someone for judging others based on beliefs. If you exclude that as a criteria for judgment, then what else do you use? Appearance?

  • @norniron7 got owned mate

  • @norniron7 you see, this is what your religion has made of you. Your religion has given u 1 less entertainer to entertain you. Would u have been more happy before or after this video?

  • @kooltrainer i dont have a religion, i simply believe that God is the creator of the universe and that he sent his Son to die for me. does this make me a bad person, that i dislike someone that has a different opinion than me, that mocks My Father. You all same to be hate'in on me for voicing a different opinion than yours, do you like or dislike me and then how are you different to me. (this isnt pointed at you kooltrainer, mostly everyone fyi :)

  • @norniron7

    1) i did not say u were a bad person

    2) it is true that the cause of ur belief has given u 1 less entertainer

    3) as such u would experience more entertainment had u not encountered ur belief.

  • @kooltrainer 1) wasnt pointing that bad person statement at you (sorry if i didnt make that clear)

    2) yes i am 1 enterainer down now, (but i wont say thats a bad thing as i spend most of my time drawing now)

    3) no i find watching chuck missler ( evangelical Christian) more entertaining than i ever did Mr fry

  • @norniron7 Why do you dislike me? I have a different opinion to you and I haven't even met you, but you don't like me :(

I want to be your friend norniron, but I guess that just makes things worse as, because you don't want to be mine, we have even more different views :'(

  • @retteretter aw i have friends that believe different to me, you can be my friend, if you wish. :)

  • @norniron7 i think the problem people heve isn't that you like or dislike someone for their views. Most people do.

the problem is rather that people should be able to laugh at genuinely good humor; be it about their believe, their parents or them selfes for that mater. not being able to do so can easily be seen as a sign of a lack of reflection which in my oppinion is a cornerstone for any kind of extremism.

furtermore: disliking someone shouldn't stop you to recognise and enjoy theyr talents

  • @norniron7 An all-knowing being who created everything had to send his son to die for us? Even my son would think that story makes absolutely no sense.

  • He nails it very well! Bravo!

  • I laughed my head of at 'Where is your God now!!'

  • @MrBuch169169 He says it as if he's quoting something, is it from a film?!

  • @atomicmrpelly I think it's actually from the Bible originally, from a story where someone challenges the faith. But it's evolved into a kind of joke whenever something horrible is happenning. :)

  • @atomicmrpelly it's something David Attenborough has said on numerous occasions when asked about his faith.

  • The only problem is that I don't think Greeks even believe in polytheism anymore. I mean. I believe it was Plato, who was in fact Greek, who philosophized that polytheism can't be right, because there would be jealousy over who is more powerful. Although Plato also felt that a god that made mistakes couldn't exist, because any god that really is God couldn't have been created, therefore it would have always been around, and therefore would have to be perfect.

  • @LvndrHppE I think when he says the greeks he means the ancient greeks.

  • Hells yeah!

  • god or gods... which ever lie you guy is still a useless joke

  • @freetheworldof Think he means "buy"?

  • @lewisner Oh yeah. Do I feel stupid for not seeing that :)

    Thanks

  • @orjanst1

    I didn't understand UniqueVoyage either.

  • I listened intently, considered... and no. I just listened to a man puffed up by his own intellect, no one could ever fully understand the ultimate PLAN, why death and destruction pervade, but Jehova God Himself. Everything works for good in the end, an end which we have yet to see. This man is an idiot and has "made himself wise" through his own foolish thinking.

  • @Weewinkle7

To say "no one could ever fully understand the ultimate PLAN, why death and destruction pervade, but Jehova God Himself" is sadly, just a cop out of the plain truth. Any such god that puts forward the message of peace & love, who then indiscriminately murders thousands of men, women & children, can only be considered at the very least, as being a hypocrite.

  • @Weewinkle7

Your comments on Stephen Fry are simply a knee jerk reaction to hearing something that you do not like. If you were to do some research, you will find that Stephen Fry is one of the kindest, gentlest men in the world. This view is also held widely by a lot of religious people. He is also extremely well educated and can talk with some authority on a wide range of subjects. If you realy are courageous, I suggest that you research your so called religion. And I do not mean the bible.

  • @freetheworldof God is definitely no hypocrite. MEN are the ones who "indiscriminately murder thousands of men, women & children" God didn't tell them to do it. I get the feeling you don't believe in any supernatural being, God or the devil so the blame in that case rests purely on man. Label the right party a hypocrite, man himself who professes the desire for a utopian society yet goes around killing people and destroying the earth. Blame the right party, man, not God. Have a nice night!

  • @Weewinkle7

Of course you are absolutely right. Men do kill men. The phrase “everything we do is according to gods plan” comes to mind. However, which god would create a planet so unstable that disasters such as: Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Hurricanes etc occur. By your way of thinking, your god created the earth, therefore your god is directly responsible for these disasters. I refer back to my original point.

Off to work now. Have a good day yourself.

  • @freetheworldof The god of the bible told the Israelites to wipe out the Midianites and slice the women through the womb. He then ordered the men to bring back the women, keep the virgins for themselves and kill the rest of them.Charming.

  • @lewisner How anyone can resist his charm is beyond me :)

  • @freetheworldof Well I hear he patted a dog on the head after he finished his genocide and infanticide. He's not all bad.

  • @lewisner Oh! well thats OK then.

Just as long as he can end each of his 'charming' acts, with the message "no dog was harmed during the killing of all these people".

  • @Weewinkle7 'God didn't tell them to do it. '

...have you actually read the bible? ....'the LORD' commands over 2 million deaths listed in the old testament. and if you take 'the great flood' story to be literally true 'he' also murdered (drowned) almost the entire population of the earth:men, women, children, babies and animals.

...this would (if it weren't obviously bronze age nonsense) make 'god' the most murderous being to have ever existed - according to the bible.

  • @andthereisntone god was still cool with Incest. He killed Lot's wife for "looking back" but when Lot's daughters had sex with Lot he didn't punish them.Divine justice rocks!

  • @lewisner well 'god is obviously a perv then ;)

  • @lewisner ....as well as the the greatest mass murder in 'history'.

  • @Weewinkle7 Thats just a retarded cop out... where is your evidence for anything you say? Where is the emperically testable evidence for this god?

  • @Weewinkle7 Everything works for good in the end you say? Wow, your God must be far more marvellous than he appears! You won't mind then if I come over to your home some time in the next month, infect you with small pox and proceed to dance around you singing ICE ICE BABY as you slowly die.

  • @Weewinkle7

    you are a joke

  • Superb, as usual.

  • Stephen Fry is my favorite atheist. Thx for the upload.

  • @bravesirrobin8

He is certainly up there with Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens and Dan Dennett

  • @freetheworldof Are you subscribed to philhellenes?

  • @redice1024

Not as yet, but will look at it

  • @freetheworldof Thanks

  • @redice1024

Looked and subscribed. Very good mix of topics

  • You would think that if god was everywhere, that theists would be setting a better example.

  • @godlessmessiah

Ah yes, but don't they say that god is forgiving as long as they repent of their sins
