Those were some extremely strong and rare tornadoes. The same tornado that raked Marlboro County and the low country kept getting stronger and stronger. It was a multiple vortex wedge tornado when it arrived in Red Springs, NC. Red Springs was essentially a miniature Xenia, Ohio when it was all over....almost everything was flattened. We went to Myrtle Beach that summer and I can still remember seeing where the tornado went through at Bennetsville. Pine trees were broken like match sticks!
I remember the tornado very good that day my family had to replace my grandparents bathroom sink. My father left the wrench at our house i went with him to get it. We lived 10 miles from newberry we both saw the funnel cloud at 4 pm the tornado warning was issued. The grandparents lived in joanna,sc we lived in kinards,sc when we were at our house the lights went out. Time we got back to joanna the news was on they said downtown was torn up. We went to see we couldn't get down some streets.
I'm very confident that the logo was in existence throughout much of the 1970s on up late 1984 (which it was replaced by the famous "Big 10" logo and that had lasted until the early 1990s).
I remember that day. Me and my two year old son was driving home from downtown. It was a nice day but no air was moving. We saw the huricane trying to touch down and we freaked out. I thought it was going to pick us up in the car. It happened so fast. I'll never forget it.
I was born on March 24, 1984 in Fayetteville, NC and my mom always would talk about some freak storm that came around the time I was born. I'm glad I finally got some info on this!
I wish that there were more videos about the 1984 tornado outbreak, especially from the Eastern NC and SC stations (in addition to this one from WIS).
I had just left the Roses Department Store that afternoon and what was so strange about that day is that it was a beautiful day and all of a sudden that storm hit. It took away one of my co-workers. I worked at Hanes Hosiery and lost a very dear friend.
I was at the Roses Department store in Bennettsville, S.C. when the tornado hit. It was my first job in high school and I had been working there for 2 weeks. I remember when the roof flew off and I got hit with everything. I didn't get hurt bad, but had shivers of glass in both my arms for days.
1 month ago today, I was let go from my job after 16 yrs. & 4 mos. I have also been denied unemployment benefits (appealing). I am a 45 yr. old white male, local resident, Navy veteran & member of my local American Legion post. I will be a hard worker for whoever hires me. I don't believe in sitting on my rear collecting a check. If anyone can aid in my quest, I would be greatful. Either reply or call 864-445-8545 or 864-554-0517. Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks. mkl62
That news set looks somewhat identical to that of WTVD-11 in Raleigh-Durham, NC. I remember picking up WIS quite a bit where I used to live outside of Rockingham, and I always have enjoyed watching WIS the best out of all Columbia (SC) stations because there was always good programming lineup on that channel.
i was almost three the day that happen i have a vague memory of hideing in the closet with my teddy as daddy and momma took care of the animals we lived in pomaria at the time
My mother's side of the family is from Newberry and we remember the tornado very well. Several of my relatives had damage that they were still cleaning up when I spent the summer of 1984 there as a teenager.

does anyone have any videos of WTVD, WBTW or WECT during that time? I sure would like it if someone posted them around here.

I had just traveled down main street in Newberry, on my way home from school that day right before it hit.

The very same logo style was used at WTOL in Toledo, WIS-TV's sister station.

That's a strange sounding music sting during the opening ID. But I like it, in a strange way.
