Shortly, it is about open standards. As long as Microsoft documents use proprietary features, these will not be compatible with IBM Lotus and will not be properly converted. The main rationale for using open standards based documents is that there are documents that will need to be opened in say 25+ years, like those used by government agencies.

But please contact the speakers themselves, IBM websites provide a directory with contact details for all their employees in the Contact menu.
