This jump would have gone even longer but he took it down earlier. It would have been much worse injury. This is like Anssi Koivuranta at Obersdorf(Hill Record). He also had to take it down in there because the jump would have been too long.

For me this is a world record because the distance is approved he only lost a lot of points because of failed landing...

in janne's book janne says "the real height is about 244m" . also the book says that if janne wouldn't have taken this jump down it would have been 254m

i'm no expert, but it looks like the difference between his and Bjørn Einar Romørens 239 m jump. BER's landing comes naturally, whereas Ahonen needs to force himself to descend quickly and ends up falling to the ground like a rock and he has no chance to land the jump.

Could be, I went a little conservative with my judgment since I'm not really an expert.

I think Ahonen crashed mainly because he had to shorten his jump so much. I think he would have landed it if he wasn't flying so high.

@TheFiery I agree with your reason why he crashed. You can see him pushing his skiis down trying to land. If you watch the side view close up, it shows it really well. He must have been freaking out seeing the flats coming up and just got sketched out and reached too soon for the landing. IF he would have kept going, sure he would have been in the flats, but only 4 or 5 feet from the ground. The "Wing," of his skis would have kept him up. But MAN! What a jump! Not far under 800 feet! Who knows?

This is a great jump but it makes me laugh so much when I found out he was drunk. They should a law against drink and jumping lol. Anyway on a more serious note I believe Janne Ahonen is the only person who could ever beat Bjorn's 239m WR. Gregor S is incredible but it takes a very experienced jumper to conquer the largest hill in the world. Maybe Janne will give everybody a surprise in Planica this year. I am a Bjorn fan but I love to see Janne jumping like this and wont be sad if he beats 239
