I was at this, and it was quite good.there was a previous one at the barbican on september 24th 1999 with joe boyd robert kirby and others. coincidentally that was exactly 30 years after I first saw him. its frightening the time thing.
@jimicocobop you're right there... all star band but some of her versions i remember wincing at the glamorisation of certain lines. i couldn't list them but i'm sure you thought the same
Melodica >check. Glockenspiel >check. Indulgent self-reverence >check. Affected whimsical air >check. The predictable nature of indiefolk. And what is it with 30+ yr old women who present themselves as precocious 13 year olds?
So completely wrong for this - or any other Drake song. Her smoked-with-innuendo superannuated indie-chick Lolita schtick makes this a travesty.
I'm doubtful about many aspects of some homage albums concerts. Drake's works of quiet dignity will never need such homages.
I'm not sure where these remarks come from. I see a relatively normal 30+ woman here. How exactly is she presenting herself as anything else? I've yet to see a "precocious 13 year old" use orchestral backing, for starters.
I've never cared for Lisa Hannigan as a musician, but here she seems to have stayed pretty faithful to Drake's original (hate to break it to you, but he's one of the biggest influences on contemporary Indie Folk).
Perhaps one day when you're older you'll acquire a sense of the word 'empathy' being rather more than a camera phone-posed affectation. It's about being able to do 'wistful' without having to 'do' it. It's about not being so smugly self-assured as never for one moment doubting yourself, your career, or the certitude that you will be anything but an unqualified success-story.
First of all, don't make assumptions about people's ages, as it's in very poor taste.
But more to the point, I'm really not seeing where you're seeing smugness. Maybe the impression is amplified because Drake himself was a manic-depressive shut-in, but I'm not really seeing excessive confidence here. Looking at the covers Lisa Hannigan does - in terms of both quantity and selection - I'm not prone to the impression that she's terribly into her own career.
'Re assumptions about people's ages': no assumption, just taking on good faith the age you give on your channel. Finally, to touch on LH: I don't know or care whether or no she's 'into her own career' -it's immaterial. I've never heard of her before & I won't be holding her or her career up to minute analysis. The intention wasn't to attack or disparage her personally, but to reflect critically on the performance of this song. I was minded -if grandly- to protect Drake's work.
@pierstheoneandonly But here's the thing, man, you are attacking and disparaging her personally. All throughout your comments you've implied she is 'smugly self-assured', affected, Lolita-esque (this is frankly just bizarre- since when is wearing a nice frock Lolita-esque?). You aren't just saying you don't like the take - you've made assumptions and presumptions about her career and about her personally. All this while claiming you don't know a thing about her. Bad form.
@pierstheoneandonly Wow. Good one. Namecheck a few common features of a genre & call it predictable. You might as well say "bass>check, drums>check, guitar>check. The predictable nature of rock" for that matter. ... Well, this is what I was gonna say... til I realised you don't actually have a clue what instruments are present here, & so your argument is not only pretentious and stupid, but completely wrong!. Melodica> nowhere to be seen or heard. Glock> I don't see one, I don't hear one...
@pierstheoneandonly ...(cont. from below) ...and before you say it, the instrument you see at 0:53 is neither of these, so get a clue. SO let's see what we've got. String section, oboe - wow, such predictable indie-folk fare, hey? And the fact that you interpret this performance as 'smoked-with-innuendo'? Dunno, maybe you've spent too much time watching videos of other women on the net? Come on man, seriously.
More then wonderful! I think this tune's overlooked and neglected, and at the same time one of the most beautiful ones made by Nick. And yes, Lisa is gorgeous!
I agree I am a hard judge when it comes to covering Nick Drake's songs. I don't know. After hearing this, I almost want to say she should've just left his songs alone. I am not a fan of this version or any of the other ones she's done. I am sure there was a lot of time gone into learning the song but there are so many aspects of the original song missing here.
That’s when they’ll know what you were truly worth. The same ones who chased van gogh out of ARELS now light lanterns to line the river wall, where Van Gogh used to wander.
Don't like the way she feels the need to put that affectation into her voice. She trys too hard. She should sing in her natural voice - it's beautiful.
If this song is not on one of her CDs already, it should be. She sings it beautifully and her dress creates a good feeling for the song. Thank you for putting this on youtube.
You know how some people look really good from far away and the closer you get the not so attractive they turn out to be? Well in Lisa's case it is completely the opposite, the closer you get to her the more beautiful she becomes!!! She doesn't need make-up or fancy clothes, she is pure beauty! I think I might have a little crush on her!! : )
if thats the case so we should give our own versions of Beethovens 9th or the Mona Lisa or Sgt Peppers or whatever else. loada bull m8. leave well alone.
@rubiconhomer Firstly, Jimi Hendrix did a cover of Sgt Peppers and it was great. Secondly, You can't really do your own version of Beethovens 9th without completely changing it. Oh and please don't compare music to paintings, its completely different.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
to be honest no1 should TRY and cover any Nick Drake songs. Its like an artist TRYING to repaint the mona lisa! fair enough she might be influenced by him but she should leave it at that. p.s. she tries too hard as well. mediocre singer at best. nick drake is unique.
Hey Leojoe, if you notice? the orchestre an Lisa are doing counterpoint?...For you that seems out of Key???Actually that is the highest level of Artistic interpretation...She is absulutely in key mr Musician, haw haw
@maursun I completely agree with you. But her body-language says that she is extremely nervous. See her hands at 1:40. Maybe she is a very shy person...
nick drake's voice in the original song is so sad and terribly desesperate... absolutely impossible to remake.... (so is the genious).... but this singer realized an excellent wishful performance... she stays inside the song and it's no question of ear.... very gorgeous....many congratulations to Lisa
You have no musical ear if thats what your picking up...dont get a low key of singing mixed up with being out of tune....why do you think she was asked to cover one of his songs?.....i,m a guitarist and singer and i know that this lady is amazingly talented.she sang and played most instruments on her debut album and also done it ina week or 2.get over your one sided opinion and your high standards of your beloved drake...she has her own style of singing thats ORIGINAL.
@lejoe48 Lisa did a great job covering this song. A cover should not try to duplicate the original but somehow make it a bit interesting while maintaining the integrity of the original. Maybe we can hear your version? or are you just a critic.
@cannonballcab I don't know who is "Lisa" ..I am not interested...She's simply OUT OF KEY, the cover is mediocre..she is a pretentious amateur. This is a really sad video because the song is so good...My honest opinion. Yeah, I hope to do better than this.
@lejoe48 ...you havent a clue man.....your a prententious amateur of a music critic thats for sure and lisa has more talent in her little finger than you have in your whole body.
@exteriorzulu09 "Lisa" has no vocal range, not accuracy or expression, she's sometimes out of key, i don't like her flat tone, her accent is strange to this songs...sorry i do not like at all ... is this a crime? I love Nick Drake..this is..absurd
@lejoe48 out of key?....and its an irish accent.....and what do you think everyone has the same tone and range?.....now thats an absurd comment.shes a successfull recording artist who tours the world and has people pay to hear her voice.your the first person ive heard that dosent like it.....oooh and how many albums or sold out gigs can we credit you with.just because you like drake dosent mean you should shit all over other peoples covers of his songs....a cover isnt meant to sound identical.
@exteriorzulu09 I have the musical ear enough to know she's out of key. Too many sibilant ssss too... She has no vocal range at all. She's not a singer, could be called an "out of tune whisperer" or something...anyway she's not singer at all. I agree with you i am Nobody, so what..I don't know who is "Lisa" and I'm happy!
@lejoe48 ...open your ears and realize that not all artists sing in the same key............................listen to this.....your judgement will tell me alot about your MUSICAL EAR..............PERSONAL JESUS BY LISA HANNIGAN....CHECK IT OUT.
Many thanks, I was looking everywhere for this concert ! the only place I seemed to find it was on HD Preview at John Lewis! .... I saw it three times on iplayer but didnt get chance to record on TV. Big Nick Drake fan and live down the road from his grave / ashes in Tanworth in arden. Like a lot of these compositions from modern artists but also check out some of the Elton John ones.... mad how Elton John wanted to cover Drake in the 70's look how big a star he could have been.
@CarlosFromPhilly I can understand your position. There's certainly nothing worse than a bad Nick Drake cover, and I think most musicians would shy away from covering any of his material.
This is a rather straight rendering, however - and it's hardly offensive. Hearing the string section is nice in itself.
@CarlosFromPhilly ...it ws never amazing anyway?..the origional from Nick drake is just Boring Dribble..Just thank Lisa for going to the trouble to remind us of who Nick Drake actually is,? an for recreating the False Nick Drake myth
@IrishFrech The original by Nick Drake isn't good? I certainly don't agree - his singing and guitar are wonderful. But I'll agree that the arrangement here is better (and Lisa sings it well, if not quite as well as Nick). That sax on the original is just too intrusive IMO.
Oh yea, it's only right that Nick Drake should be interpreted by the Mistress of interpretation...Lady Lisa ,LOVELY MAID..who will go down in history as perhaps one of the greatest interpretors......Lovely Lisa....an good that we English n Irish can collaburate??...'tis rare, but beautifull when it happens,Love to all, Cunla
@quemo2009 ...Yea, what's Lisa doing in 2010..Are they still together the band?...I ordered their c.d" Sea Sew" last month, an i still haven't recieved it...Must admit i don't think Lisa's not busy, not her nature....an i imagine she's gettin some new lyrics together, hopefully alternative jazz rock fusion....Anyway wish her luck n much love
@quemo2009 I think the fact the band aren't there is simply because she was invited as a singer to perform. She still works with the same people she did way back when she was singing with Damien Rice. After he dropped her they got together and started making music. Check out her tumbler page there are videos of her and her band writing for the second album.
I couldn't understand the genius of his songwriting until I heard other people singing his songs on that BBC4 concert , because, to be honest, I didn't really take to his voice.
But I think all the musicians at this concert did him proud. Loved it.
Not a huge fan of Lisa's but this is pretty damn good cover !!

Lisa, where is your band? You know, the one that got you to where you are today? Geesh. Shame on you for dumping them.

Loved it.
