This is opera. Why do people get so aggressive and offensive with their comments? No need to shout, swear or abuse each other. It's not like your lives depend on it. Just agree to disagree.
You are both forgetting something- First this story is of a biblical nature, Scecond Dalila SEDUCED with DECEPTION, as all women do. They must tempt you with that that you desire most. Most important, it is the MUSIC that we love, not the idiotic discussions about it. Thank you-now shut the FUCK UP.
Opera is about music and singing . This must be one of the greatest interpretations of all time , with two of the most beautiful singers and marvellous direction in this Covent Garden performance . Whether Dalila id making love or faking , this moves me to tears , I have made love like this and to have a woman woo me with such passion would be totally captivating . Shirley Verrett was one of the greatest Mezzo Sopranos with a beautiful rounded voice and tone .
Come on guys! This is awful! She is off-key so often... The interpretation is also completely wrong. Dalila was not in love, she was pretending and many phrases are supposed to be only her thoughts, not an explicit love declaration to Sanson. Really awful.
@FilmGuyNewyork No, the Dalila story is not about seduction, it is about deception, no matter how much seduced you are by Ms. Verrett. She conveys the wrong emotion and lots of it, which makes it even worse. In addition to being off-key so many times. If what you like is the music, there are plenty of better interpretations.
@1marcelo well I am sorry to say that I don't believe Dalila could deceive without seducing. if she couldn't seduce there would be no deception. Besides there are more than one emotion going on in this characters head or what would be the point. As for there being "better" interpretations that is a matter of opinion. With all do respect I look at or listen to art to be moved and we are all moved by different things. A sound I love, you might not get. A sound you love I might not get.
It's the great singers and their great performances that makes so many want to become opera singers. Wow! Love Shirley Verrett! She sings like a goddess. She's got everything! What a performance by both! Jon Vickers gives me the chills, too! Why can't they live forever?!?! Onegin65, Thank you for the great post!!
Not only is Miss Verrett superb as Delilah, but I can't help but rave with sheer pleasure with how hot, masculine and a superb bear figure tenor Jon Vickers appears in this scene. Quite frankly as a gay man, I would unashamedly trade places with Miss Verrett in this scence, ring down the stage curtain and make passionate love to Jon Vickers. Many thanks for posting this beautiful love scene.

can someone note down or give me a link for samson's lyrics in this? sadly i seem unable to find them, and vickers seems to have given up enunciating in this performance. or maybe thats just the french.
Could you find and get on youtube the whole opera exactly in this performance (with Sir Colin Davis. J. Vickers, Shirley Verrett, J. Summers) please? Thanks a lot!!
@cornificius22vain Look up the B/W version from 1971, BBC. There she is AWSOME. 1981 she had begin to break inte 'two registers'. But around 1962-77 she was second to none.
Miss Verrett: One of the best of all time. How the world will miss that magnificent voice and beautiful personality. You were always such a joy to the senses.
Tout est BEAU...les timbres...les voix...les intonations...l'expression...le jeu d'acteur...la prise de son ainsi que la partition de Saint SAENS. Que d'émotions!!!
I'm spending the evening exploring La Verrett's YouTube videos after learning of her death this weekend. I had forgotten what an incredible range this singer had. From dramatic mezzo to dramatic coloratura, and superb in each fach. I love this recording, despite it's human imperfections. They are both such such magnificent musical actors, and her Dalila is the best on record.
despite the technical flaws from both, this performance is the one that always moves me to tears, Vickers cracking, Verrets off moments, all add to making this a bit of imperfect PERFECTION,.. Vickers heroic last note is almost like a swan song to me, and captures a feeling of ineffable poignancy and pathos. This is truly tear jerkingly romantic and beautiful.
I am moved...thank you to the two great artists, for this moment captured in time for us to enjoy. M. x
@JCLAWS apt description on Vicker's explosive high B. It sounded like the sound of Vicker's voice went from 1960s standard stereo to 2010s True HD on that single incredible note.
I love her but isn't she out of breath? Please explain if it just my imagination? Isn't this a mezzo role? Isn't Shirley a soprano? Other than all those questions, I love what I hear.
@lucca54 She began her career as a mezzo and then transitioned to soprano roles with varying success. And when I say varying I mean HUGE variations between wild, scintillating successes and some unfortunate choices. But yeah she's a singer who defies "fach" designations and basically did her thing and thrilled us for years and years.
Ms. Verrett is a true gem! I heard her perform this aria in recital in Milwaukee, Wi. She received three curtain calls and was kind enough to greet me warmly backstage. Classy LADY!!!!
She is the best Dalila I ever heard. I have never heard such nyance in this aria as she has. Her voice sonds powerfull in voce di petto as in the high register. He is also an amazing voice, and several cracks that occured him during the performance do not change the impresion. Being singer myself, I know how it is dificult to sing when your throat is dry and how easily can crack then. This is a very unpleasant position to sing and support the voice, which is essential when some problems occur
Please point me toward a singer who does it be better and can also match her level of involvement, the timbre of the sound, the drama and the passion. I won't hold my breath.
Who could you possibly be? His final Bb was the size of the Mediterranean Sea. Yeah, both way too old, but this is opera. It's a total waste of breath to criticize music making of this stature, depth, and brilliance. They know what they are singing about, my God...old and ruined, but way epic. Her mugging between the verses is just priceless. She paid a dear vocal price for her preference to take the chest voice too high, but what a performer!
What an exquisite duet. I could listen to this forever. No wonder Samson gave in to Delilah with the luscious exquisitve sounds of both artists. Many thanks for this post.
I can't see myself listening to Verrett as I fall asleep. I could listen to Callas for that. Instead, Verrett sings with fiery passion and BITE. She knew how to satisfy an audience's need for drama and JUICY singing -- much like Price. Verrett takes this pleasant lullabye and turns it into a wild, passionate vehicle for lust and hormonal exploration. Watching and listening to her is delicious!
Positively divine. Vickers, during his lifetime had no peers. Verrett, prior to trying to be a Soprano had no equal as a Contralto. This is a piece of history, thankfully comitted to video for all time. Simply, sublime. Thanks Onegin65 for this post and all of your fabulous posts!
What a fabulous low register she has. And he hardly "cracks"--what critics! To be able to sing with her right on top of you--what lung power Vickers had!
I was there! - it was spellbinding. I remember Jon V cracking but it seemed in keeping. Shirley was so sinuous and compelling. I went again a few years ago to the same staging, but with Jose Cura and ? - not a patch on this!
Even the great Jon Vickers cracks but as most people are focussed on Verrets great rendition, hardly anybody notices in 5:6. Amazing document and great video! I don't know how can Vickers sing those pianissimi in that position. That's the beauty of YouTube. Thanks for the posting!
Two geniuses makin' whoopee. Okay by me. I could watch these two forever. Maybe I'll play it in the morning instead of tacky news programs. Shirley is so masterful at these roles, always a little hard at the bottom in this area to emphasize the passion of the moment and not the beauty of the melody, which only she and Callas seem to understand. Horne, Resnick, et al have their great points, but Shirley's soul is pure and her musical knowledge so miraculous that she gets the ring in my opinion.
i have no idea how she could keep singing when he was groping her and all...i would have forgotten my notes...this is absolutely amazing...one of the best performances i've seen
THIS is what it is all about. this is hame fur me. j'taime.

The soprano part is better than the mezzo tones here. But in the earlier b&w version she is the best ever.

Callas fan here, but you must give credit where credit is due, and the fact is it doesn't get much better than this. What a superb Dalilah!
