  • What an awakening on this planet. We sure can use a lot of light over the darkness.

  • Ron Paul 2012 !!

  • Titan

  • I play this over and over, as needed.

  • Thank you for the great post! Hedges speaks to and for so many. Subscribed, sub back!

  • Yes,yes,yes!

  • This is SO MUCH better than the average idiotic Marxist speech I heard.

This is freedom, this even sounds like JFK-like "conservative" liberalism.

Vote Ron Paul 2012 and you'll get this speech IN REAL LIFE... or don't, vote Obama back, and it's gonna be MUCH WORST!!!!!

  • CHRIS HEDGES FOR PRESIDENT

  • @ScotiaWaHey NOBODY FOR PRESIDENT-END THE LIE THAT IS STATISM-EVERY MAN BE HIS OWN LEADER>

  • We need great orators like this wonderful man...to stir our souls, to make the hairs on the back of our necks tingle...to remind us of our human-ness and our need for community...to join together and remind us that we all feel the same pains and joys....and that Hope is something we need to hang onto when the 'Powers that Be' seem determined to wreck everything around us to destabilise and disorient us...Viva OWS et al

  • "Hope sees in our enemies our own face."

    WoW.....

  • chris hedges=integrity

  • Wow.

  • Disrespectful people speaking while he talks what the hell!!!!!

  • Behringer speakers!!! Nice!!!

  • Mr. Hedges should run for president. He has all the qualities that exemplifies the true characteristics of a leader.

  • I've only become aware of this guy recently. Very interesting perspective. I'm a bit cynical myself so this kinda resounds well.

  • I REALLY would like to participate in this movement.

  • Wonderful speech.

  • he should be president

  • Wow.

  • The speech is like Mark Anthony's as he holds the dead Julius Caesar and repeats the refrain that Brutus is an "Honourable man" ... "1939" was controversial as Auden was seen as abandoning Britain...But Auden was poet not a politician as such.

In any case. Let us hope there is hope.

  • He finishes with quote from Auden's 1939 written in the US on the eve of war. It is a good poem but at that time controversial. Auden had previously written the great poem "Spain" with the line "The necessary murder." This concerned the Spanish Civil War and the rise of fascism. He (wrongly I think) removed that line even before Orwell criticized it. But Hedges's choice of lines is still powerful.

  • @PETETHEMEAT42

somewhere on the floor of the octagon that showcases the perennial struggle between freedom of expression and censorship lies a drain into which the putrid slobber (re: your comment) runs. on this channel...i won't delete the vacuous blurbs from evolution's errata; these stupid comments simply remind the big boys that smurfs in fact exist, and that--simply for variety's sake--we have to be careful not to squash your species to extinction as we walk the higher, harder road.

  • @PETETHEMEAT42

p.s. : my apologies to Lazy Smurf, Grouchy Smurf, Brainy Smurf, Papa, Grandpa, Baby, Smurfette, Nanny, Sassette and, of course, Handy.

  • Still as powerful as the first time I heard it.

  • Still as powerful as when I first heard it.

  • @rabudman he's part of the new antiwar movement in October- I think things are shifting just look at Israel-the recent 1st world western nation to have a huge movement

  • @freddietz96 this is one of the best speeches to come out of the liberal movement in a long time

  • Very very moving speech

  • I thought I listened to this speech a lot when it came out, yet now I’m listening to it more. Maybe he’s saying “Keep fighting for the community over the corporation even though people’s hearts are small,” or keep looking for the God in Man. Or seeing a future where there really is liberty & justice for all. I, myself, find myself contradicting everything I personally like just to push forth the Dignity of Man, often feeling like a boxer now dreaming of the fight, as he’s already been KO’d.

  • Chris Hedges reminds me of the "weeping prophet" Jeremiah. Just as some don't like and are threatened by Chris Hedges' messages, so did many how hated and didn't take heed of the messages of the prophet Jeremiah. Mistreated, disrespected, laughed out and arrested, yet the prophet remained true to the One who gave him the message. Keep on speaking Chris. Your message is valid and encouraging to millions of those who hear it. Spread the truth and shine your light on the corruption of the USA.

  • Children, generations from now will read this in history books, or there will be no history books and our country will be a distant memory, written about and debated in future cultures as yet another in a long list of fallen empires.

  • Gandhian

  • Great speaker

  • Great speech!! Man that guy just gave me hope!

  • What did you expect, the bourgeois Barack Obama to deliver you? As Chomsky says, "There is one party and two factions."

The Democrats--like the Republicans-- are Capitalists who whisper in the ears of the American people while raping them without lubrication.

  • @danielbalter dems act like they are the party of the working man its all a lie

  • @phildirt3 Opt out of voting for the dems then... but the media has done a good job in discrediting alternatives between the dems and the republicans...

  • An amazing speech. This is a message that everyone should hear and pout into practice. Thank you for posting

  • Do not think...OBEY!

Yup, they're gonna have to shut him up...he's to dangerous.

To bad, he's a good guy.

  • Too bad about the camera work

  • "hope posits that people are drawn to the good by the good" - and that would be hope's power? no.

many people have commented on how friendly, honest and idealistic i am - they see that as a negative thing. and i am a radical, a freak, because of that. i have not drawn anybody who has values i would consider "good" to me in years. and i have not seen change in my environment because of the things i say.

if that was hope's power then hope would not exist.

  • wow...

  • why was he arrested??

  • AWESOME SPEECH!

This man is a REAL Patriot!! And OBAMA is a puppet lackie of Corporate Fascistism... like Bush, Clinton and Bush, before him!!!

    WST

  • Chris may not have realized it, but he has redefined "hope". Usually hope is about passive, wistful wishing that someone bigger and better will intervene in our fate ("I hope I win the lottery"). But Chris talks of action as well as hope, of shaping our own future, not permitting others to shape it. Well done, Chris!

  • The Martin Luther King of today's America. Standing up for the downtrodden.

  • This brings to mind Chomsky's quotation of Antonio Gramsci:

"Pessimism of the Intellect. Optimism of the Will."

Hedges has become one of the most impassioned voices sounding the warning bell re American fascism. Thanks for uploading this speech.

  • @TheeUnidentified

Thanks. More to come. Check out my other short films posted here and feel free to subscribe...

  • @TheeUnidentified yes. agreed.

  • @TheeUnidentified "Pessimism of the Intellect. Optimism of the Will." It wasn't Chomsky who say that, but Antonio Gramsci.

  • Finally, a sign of hope

  • Nader/Hedges 2012!

  • Hedges is a good man, and fighting a disgrace of a sytstem with one hand tied behind his back is no mean feat.

    Fantastic video!

  • Chris Hedges is a hero, a fantastic journalist, and an inspiration. Many of my YouTube videos are inspired by his work and activism.

  • Chris Hedges is a bright light in dark times & he needs the community to get behind him. His family carries a great burden as well.

  • Here's a first step one can take in hope's direction: Turn OFF the teevees. It's all lies and subliminal messaging.

    Great video - Thumbsup!

  • @DeSwiss Going on almost a year now withought cable or satelite...You are right...you feel alot better over time!

  • We must spread this all over in any form we can. I've got to learn how to convert all of the videos I've downloaded into a burnable video for a CD or DVD, so that I can pass them out in my real life travels around Massatack.

  • @forty911 you need four programs. Virtualdub, ffmpeg, H.264 Encoder, and Audacity. Use VirtualDub to convert the files from FLV to AVIs, and then if they are not in that format, use H.264 Encoder to get close to the smallest compressed video size possible, and after you strip the audio out with VirtualDub, use Audacity to convert it to mp3, to again save space.

  • I wish more people would listen to Chris Hedges.

  • @symzie we gotta make this go viral so that people will hear it

  • Great speech! : )

  • Salute to you, Mr. Hedges ! American people have become one of the most brain washed people in the world. But soon or later they will wake up to face the truth that you are speaking of today.

  • You guys think Chris should run for something? I think he might be the kind of guy who has enough charisma to lead, or is it just me?

  • @MustacheVerra he's got true grit

  • @MustacheVerra You need to stop thinking in terms of the electoral process. Your Republic is dead. Chris Hedges' task is not to rule you; it is to inspire you to begin to rule yourselves.

Americans were given the Republic when they were still at that level of immaturity when they needed indirect government. Now, however, you must go further. Every individual must become their own executive. The time of the sovereign individual is at hand.

  • @petrus4 You said it.

  • He is correct in saying that the Chris Hedges of the world are the small veneer keeping the angry serfs from bombing the capitol.

  • @starkweather444 well stated. Chris Hedges is the physical manifestation of hope

  • "I do not believe in hope- hope is too passive and always patient. I believe in action." Andrew Raimon Savage

"The man who lives by hope will die by despair." -Italian Proverb

"Stop hoping for something to happen and make something happen." Andrew Raimon Savage

  • Well put Chris Hedges, and a Thank You to all of the veterans of the military and CIA who have put their bodies on the line. You have shown the way and stand as an example to we the people,

Tea Baggers take note, that the chasm that divides us is a product of the corporate masters...peace

  • NO!! Don't Blow UP the PEOPLE'S PROPERTY,Just HIT THE STREETS. It's YOUR Country .Time the PEOPLE STOP fighting each Other ,Start Kicking the Corrupted Politicans Arses and Start Holding WAr CRIMES Trials for ALL the Bastards including the CORRUPTED CORP MSM. Those Bastards are Guiltier than the Prick Politicans,THEY SOLD the LIE to the PEOPLE.Jesus there's 350 MILLION of YOU,they CAN"T KILL YOU ALL. The USA is SICK and It's Time for Doctor HEAL THYSELF. You are BETTER than Your Government

  • I love Chris Hedges

  • It is time that we recognizea FUNDAMENTAL TRUTH about the vast majority of politicians and their masters on Wall Street: They are FUNCTIONALLY insane within the context of a humane and civil, social democracy.

Think about that for a moment...

That is to say, the very foundation of the American Republic, the Constitution, a document which has been amorphous enough to enable and encourage the worst of society to become the most powerful, disallows the existence of a civil, social democracy.

  • This this speech will echo in this country for many generations. Hedges has certainly earned his right to speak it. God speed, my friend, God speed.

  • @Wildfeather God Speed indeed, I'm an atheist but I admire Christians like Chris Hedges. His vision of Christianity should be, when Christ was alive. Tolerant and compassionate towards others.

I've had the fortune of meeting Christians like Chris Hedges. Though I personally disagree with Christians about God (some are my good friends) I can admire the vision the Christ they describe had for the world.

  • excellent

  • To Obama: Freedom is not doing whatever one want's to do - Freedom Mr Presiden,t is doing what one has to do not blaming a bush. By doing nothing Mr. President the people want freedom - Freedon from undeclared killings wars - freedom from the menacing forces of government .
