Read: Princess in Exile. GD Maria Pavlovna was the first Romanov feminist, and was true to Imperial Russia unto her last breath. This is a woman to be admired for her courage. She maintained a family secret with grace and determination.
I'm halfway through her Memoires right now, "Education of a Princess".
She was certainly herself ! An unapologetic Grand Duchess !
It was, even when she was growing up and living in it, a bygone menagerie........ they were gilded creatures. Gorgeous, pampered, perfumed creatures. I love reading about them, seeing vestiges of them and glorying in their evanescence...........
Their existence today defies logic and prudence. They are Pharaohs and Celestial Chinese Emperors.
she has suffered a lot, it is quite sad when I read she has a distant relation even with her son, she is raised up by ella, this makes me just can't help but believe she is a really good woman.
She once residented in US but move to other place as US recgnize soviet union, when I read this, I could help but nearly cry. She is a true romanov, not as famous as dagmar or xenia, or ever her brother dimitri, but she is living to her own standard, a very nobel standard.
A fitting tribute to the Grand Duchess Marie, I read her memoirs Education of a Princess when I was in my teenage years it left a lasting impression. Grand Duchess Elizabeth raised her in part; the book gives a moving account of Ellas life and tragic death I highly recommend it. This lady is a genuine example of what the human spirit can accomplish even under the most strenuous and painful circumstances.
@AXA0032 Thank you for mentioning her book Education of a Princess. Likewise I read it years ago. It is a very important document for those seeking to understand the very personal life moments of the era.
I fondly remember the relating of her final moments with Russian soldiers who protected her through the end of her journey away from Russia; holding a candle to each of their faces, Then gone forever.

1:13 Five generations of family... quite an achievement even in those times although Maria Pavlovna's poor mother didn't live to be there physically.
