Would the results be the same if the money in the tip cup was an amount worth taking? Would the people who pass up the chance to swipe 10 cents still have the same stance if it were 10 dollars?
No wonder I always Failed Life. I forgot to rationalize when I got away with something and rather Rationalized when I didn't get away with something... God forbid I wanna murder you... by the time somebody found your body, every body would be saying... "(Your name goes here) who?... Ohh that guy yeah I know that guy... oh that's not the same guy cuz' you carbon dated the bones... humm howd he die... oh yeah bad way to go." Remember that! next motherfucker that tries to sell me a Salvaged POS CAR
The only thing I would question about this video is his use of the word "we". "We" feel comfortable rationalizing our non-monetary theft. Journalists do the same thing. It's a sweeping generalization. "I" do not rationalize petty theft. "i" have been damnably infused with an ethical standard that ensures that I never steal office-supplies, silverware, tupperware, or gym towels.
Had you placed the coke on a sidewalk fewer people would take it because it violates one's expectation and is therefor a risk. Perhaps cupcakes are a better example because coke is pretty safe in the aluminum can
Regarding the Six Pack of Coke vs Plate of Money experiment. My guess is that the reason money wasn't taken is that one is uneased by a plate of money in a fridge. Had you put the money on a counter without a plate it too would disappear. That one is more about expectation. You expect coke in a fridge, not money.
