  • Have you made these samples? I'd be interested to know where do those sounds come from. Reason? A synthesizer? Some VST?

  • @Ottomatik0 They came from Native Instruments Reaktor, one of the Electronic Instruments Vol.2 I think

    Thanks for watching:)

  • love this compostion

  • Wow it sounds really nice

Im thinking to get one too

    well done!

  • @dendendn yea I finally got one !

  • can you chop and record samples directly to the unit or do you have to transfer them to a unit from a computer or another source?

  • @coughlintm You can chop on the unit, its not easy though, much quicker to do it on a computer then import samples onto the pads.

  • Amazing

    i need one!!

  • Very, very good. It sounds like I'm walking through a machine shop with cotton balls in my ears (this is a compliment by the way). Keep up the beautiful music.

  • Hi, great job. Do you think you could the same thing with the software Battery? Thanks.

  • @fabiovsroque I think so, I use battery, works the same way, you'd probably have a lot more control of each sample too, compression, envelope, level etc. Just not sure if there is a max sample length per cell in Battery.

    Thanks

  • Great song man, I've listened to this several times just randomly stumbling onto it on here and I enjoy it every time, but I have a question.

In this you have like 10 samples all looping at the same time, but on my 404(sx) normally after the i hit the 7th or 8th sample, it will stop playing the first, as if I hit a limit.

Am I doing something wrong here or what?

  • @brettgreen1 Depends on your samples being mono or stereo; the SP 404 samplers have a 12 note polyphony, so either 12 mono samples or 6 stereo can be played at the same time. Chances are if you are already using the maximum polyphony, and then trigger another sample, it will cancel a 'playing' sample out. I converted all my samples to mono on the PC before transferring to the sampler to maximise the amount of samples I can play simultaneously. Hope this helps. M

  • I've had my sp for 3 days & I was a lil stumped at 1st, but now I see your using some samples without gates & with loops. Very Creative Stuff Bro! I like it!

  • @digitaljosh Cheers man, thanks for checking out.

  • i really want one of these and theres one going second hand great condition for £220 ($350 USD) should i get it?????!

  • from where are the samples??

  • good music!

  • you should make a recording of this. I'd download it.

  • does this already come with sounds built in?

  • @SordidClot if it does they're probably lame

  • wow i really want one!

  • how on earth are you doing this man!? im completely new all this but ive been fancinated by it, are these recordings, or built in synths? if they are samples, how have you managed to get them sounding so brillant?

  • @thescatterbrain123 Thanks, they are samples I made/altered in Reaktor (software) then just bounced them all individually so they are one each pad. I have been doing similar stuff lately just usung found sounds from garden/kitchen and processing them through reverbs/vocoders, thats probably a good place to start.

  • ehehe biosphere stile, nice work man! five star°°°°°

  • Nice and hypnotic!

  • @youtraze if I could get an MPC1000, would you say that is preferable to the sp555?

  • @sheatheman Yeah, I'd definitely go for an MPC after owning one of these, SP-555's are good for loops and basic triggering, but if you really want to get creative, go for an MPC (my opinion) Thanks

  • @youtraze man i didn't expect a reply for 5 months. thanks. great stuff by the way. ever listen to Biosphere? some people might say this bit reminds them of selected ambient works vol. 2, but it really has something.

anyways, better than Fuck Buttons to be sure; I love warp but I don't know how much longer we can trust them. hopefully forever.

  • @sheatheman Hey thank, am big fan of Ambient works Vol.2, recently listened to Fuck Buttons, bits of it were good but didn't really do it for me. Warp though; all good things come to an end.

  • @sheatheman

    Warp?

Get Flying Lotus's Cosmogramma. Warp ain't dead! :3

  • @YoungUnicorn i know they're not dead. cosmogramma is a good album, as well as sufi and a killa. i get an album from warp at least every month.

  • Simple, yet AWSOME! Especially the background drone. U should consider signing a contract with Warp or something. Artist like High Places or Fuck Buttons are highly praised by critics, so I guess if u release an EP with this kinda stuff, the reception will be quite good.

  • nice. perhaps you can enhance the vid by recording direct audio from it so that the noise of the button presses aren't so distracting. keep it going!

  • Nice- have you recorded any other ambient things? Would be nice to have a direct ver of what you did here. I'm a big fan of BOC, Terry Riley, Eno, etc.

  • Where'd you get the samples from? You make them with a keyboard or download them? Awesome stuff. Very Atlas Sound-esque.

  • sounded a bit like sumfin port blue or album leaf would do.... well done its mint (y) x

  • ahhh i like you wor here with the roland....nice

  • Very nice! Reminds a bit of Tim Hecker!

  • @satyr42 HI, I have a Sp 555 now, but have experienced some similar problems, it's down the speed of the card, i.e. haw fast it can read and write, because the Sp 404 7 555 both read and write directly to and from card, it causes problems, so go for the fastest card, i'm currently using a Kingston Ultimate, which is fine.

  • Yes! I returned my 404 because of CF problems. The 404sx, however, uses SD cards up to 32GB! Which i will purchase as soon as I get the cash.

  • excuse me if this is a repeat question, but did you sample a Hang Drum for the main sound?

  • @justFUNdimples HI, no i used a kick drum put through a vocoder and reverb, and a phaser I think too. Thanks

  • haha i thought it was a hang drum too.

  • do you find yourself using a lot of patterns with this type of music?

  • great ambient stuff.....! congrats.

  • hi satyr, you should only use the manufacturer recommended cars, i always use sandisk ultra II and they work perfectly!! have fun with the 404. greetings, f.

  • whoa, that's awesome!

  • nice drone

  • hey, you shoudl do an ambient sound tutorial. i also have the sp 555 and i keep watching this video to see what your flipping with the knobs, doesnt work. i dont know the 404 numbers. i understand if its your little secret its just dam amazing, id be interested in see how you flipped the original samples into what im hearing. anyways, nice video!

  • few cutoff - much hall :D

  • sounds awesome....im lookin to get an sp...either 303 or maybe the 404 after listening to what you are doing....how do you up load the samples and assign them to each pad?

  • You put all the samples on to the flash card which goes in the front, then i just do the bulk load function which basically puts each individual sample on the next available pad. I have upgraded now though to the SP 555, this comes with a software interface which allows you to assign specific samples from your computer hard drive to any pad you want.

  • Great video man! I am about to purchase one of these and I need to know something.

Is it possible to (using a card reader of course) upload drum kits (drum samples and other stuff) to the card, plug it into the roland sampler and use those drum kits. Just for variety so I'm not using just the generic ones in the drum machine.

Also after I plug it into my mixer and turntable, does this have a recording function on it so I could put together a set of patterns to record a track?

    ~DJ Aizu

  • Hey man, I've listened to an incredible range of music, and I'm sure you realized ambient is one of the best ways to go, so keep up the work.

I was wondering if you could tell me, is this sampler as versatile as it sounds? I mean I know the hardware AND software limitations, but musically, is it?

    Thanks.

  • Hi there, thanks for checking the video out. regarding the sampler itself; i've recently upgraded to the SP 555, which is quite similar, it's fairly versatile from a performance point of view if you want to trigger samples (loops/one shots) and run them through the on board effects, the new 555 is much better though as it has a loop capture function similar to the boss loop pedals.

  • For sound creation its not the best, quite limited and a little frustrating at times, but as with a lot of Roland gear, there are creative ways of using it, probably not intended by Roland themselves.

    Thanks

  • That's awesome dude, sounds so professional.

  • Thanks, glad you like it. M

  • Not to everyones tastes, I know. Thanks for checking it out.

  • I can't believe someone would think of this like that. This is amazing!

  • some pretty goddamn great humming and screeching every once in awile music!

  • Amazing! Very good and inventive work!

  • Thanks for checking it out.

  • that looks really fun, i think im getting a roland sp soon. i think you'd like my music, look up "Hear Hums"

  • thanks for posting this...very cool

  • really great work

  • do you listen to animal collective?

  • does this have a card input or even usb?

i have multiple synths and drum machines but none have the ability to sample, i want to use a lot of vocal samples i have recorded on my computer in my tracks will this machine do the job?

  • yeah i'm pretty sold on this machine now. damn.

  • Beautiful. Calming. Inspiring.

    Thank you.

  • Nice! Just bidded for a 404 on ebay because of this.

  • I really like this track!

Do you have an mp3 of this? Or even an album?

    Cheers

  • BLISSFUL! Good to see someone doing something interesting for once instead of the usual boring hip hop stuff.

  • i cant wait til i get one of these!!!

  • Are you Byetone?

  • nice track

  • Guys, where do you get the sounds from? I'm new in this.. what websites do you recommend for me to get libraries of stock sounds and loops? I know the SP404 includes many but what If I want to bring in my own? thanks!

  • Make your own! Thats always the most fun

  • wonderful - i just got a 404 so this is encouraging.

  • oh! soothing

  • reminds me a bit of caribou, check him out if you've never listened to them

  • thats enlightening my friend

    youre very talented

    thank you for sharing that

    im gonna re-watch it

  • where do u get the samples from? iuve been wanting to do stuff like this

  • very nice sounds, man. i see a lot of youtube vids of people doing really mediocre stuff with good equipment, but this is something i'd actually listen to. very loscil/biosphere-esque. I'm planning on getting one of these to hook up to my padKontrol to get some glitch-hop done, it looks like an excellent sampler.

  • does the 404 have midi so i could use it with Reason???

  • Im using real guitars bases synths pianos and drums with a boss rc50, roland portastudio, tascam reel to reel with all the usual samples aswell.

  • This is great, it's good to see something other than "gangsta" beats on these samplers.

  • @Greenblackie LMAO... Gangster beats hahaha. Thats exactly what i was thinking, the fact that most of the vids show people making not so impressive beats. This is probably the best video demonstrating the SP-404 ive seen so far. Its a real inspiration to make me use mine more... so cool!!! Love the ambiance.

  • What Memory card do you use??

I can't find any of the ones that it requires!!!!

  • They take Compact Flash cards. Try craigslist/ebay. Lots of older cameras take them.

  • trippy shit, love it!

  • Did you splice that sample from an mp3 that you chose? Or is this off some package that came with the product. and if so, are you able to loop your own samples with the sp 404

  • All the samples were created individually, then bounced over to separate pads on the SP 404. So yeah you can loop your own samples on it. Thanks.

  • This might be dumb but can you make the same sounds with the sp-555?

  • Yeah, you can, except the 555 has more features (and thankfully more pads)

  • yeah, im thinking between this and the 555

is the extra stuff really worth 300 bucks?

  • probably not, to be honest though if you look around you can get an mc-808 for less than the 555 and it's better than both.

  • I think im gonna get the 404, its half the price of the 808

  • yeah, if it's sampling you're after than it's perfect, but i'm getting the 808 because it has 128 voices of polyphony, this one only has 12, but that's cool since it only has 12 pads anyway

  • yeah, 128 poly would be nice to midi keys into and play weird shit (if you can do that)

but all I really need is that quantize feature to just play my emx songs on

  • yeah, see, you already have an emx, so this would be perfect for you, instead of going out and getting an esx. I don't already have a drum machine, just a bunch of synths that sit idle in my room. I need this to whip their asses and get them making music. And the fact that it's got a sampler is just icing, but powerful icing.

  • yeah, thats what I was thinking

the 555 has that loop catch thing, but I has the kaoss pad also, which kinda does that anyways, I just need something to throw songs together, so its either this or the mpc500 (which seems more taylored towards hiphop rather than trance)

  • thanks man i like what you're doing with that it just looks like a toy but im out here in the desert so you just sold me i think roland owes you a check lol do you think one of those m-audio midi keyboards are compatible with this i mean if looks nifty wish it came in black lol but thanks none the less man

  • you can get a black faceplate for it on ebay, all you gotta do is unscrew the silver one off and replace it

  • i have a question im in iraq and i need something portable in the sand my mpc 2000 is too big to lug around the 404 seems cool but

is there a way i can record a midi keyboard directly into it?

and how can i record songs onto cd or transfer them into mp3 files whats the best software?

also theres no screen so how do you know what samples you are loading ? thanks a bunch you seem knowledgeable about this tool

  • Hi there, you can record a keyboard directly into the stereo line in if thats what you mean. To transfer afterwards there's loads of software out there if your on PC soundforge or wavelab is good, for MAC soundstudio or peak are good too.

Regarding the non-existent screen, you just have to remember what pad and bank the samples are on, which can be a little frustrating.

    Thanks

  • I really like this. Where did you get the samples?

  • I just got one today..and I must admit I am abit over-whelmed. Let me know if you want to exchange e-mails..be great to have some support..lol.

  • Great stuff dude...how do you record your final product?..do you have a flash card reader to transfer it to your computer?...Let me know if you can...

  • well done! just tried one of these, and

thought the effects were very good.

  • I used to line record, but i fucked my speaker configuration and it wont work no more. :(!

i have to record with a mic. its good quality though.

    I don't use a memory card, i need one.

  • very nice work!

  • how much that thing cost

  • This is really good, i like your sounds!

  • could you be any more baked?

  • ur a dumbshit btw...

  • this is amazing, i love ambiant stuff! good work.

just one question, what do you use to make the sounds, im looking into getting one and i need to be able to do lots of ambient stuff, hoping you can help me as this is the only video i can find of ambient stuff using one of the sp series.

  • Hi there. For this video I used a lot of sounds made in Reaktor 5 by Native Instruments. However, some of my new stuff uses more natural/found sounds, just have to edit them in an audio editor on my Mac to trim and change pitches etc if needed.

  • nice,im going to try and get reaktor, quite expensive though.

just wondering how do you record your natural sounds?

im interested in hearing more of your stuff have you got any more videos ?

  • Natural sounds, quite literally go out with a digital recorder and mic and go for it. Or sometimes uses sample libraries. Then process them on the computer before transferring to the Roland. I'll try and put up some more video's during the week.

    Thanks

  • mesmerising

  • I am stuck in the world of Fruity Loops. I never had the privilege to learn anything off dj equipment.

  • So am I, FL is good once you get the hang of it, whats worse is, once upon a time (11 yrs back) I had access to a Roland Drum machine, mixer and Yamaha pro Keyboard.. creating beats was easier and faster!

  • hey dus any1 no if u can make a hole track on this roland sp 404 im mean do u still have 2 use fruity loops aswell???

  • I have the sp404, and use fruity loops. What I do is build the beats on FL, then dump the .wav file onto the sp404. Then I use the samples with my live band. Cool stuff.

  • I finally got myself a nice sound library to work from. I am less spiteful for not having 30,000 dollars in dj equipment. ^^

  • this may sound dumb, but im new to the world of electronic music and i know nothing. are those sounds being produced from that or do you get them from some where else. if some were else, where from?

  • I get the sounds from a software program called Reaktor 5 and load them into the Roland sampler to use live (well sort of anyway).

  • neat vid. thanks for posting

  • Beautiful.

  • this is really inspiring, thanks!

I also compose electroacoustic/ambient sorta music and have been seriously looking at the 404 as a live tool I can use along with my ebowed/prepared guitar. this video helps!

  • Nice! Together with a FM synth, and a couple of fuzz pedals will be a great setup for noise/industrial/ambinet!

  • that was very relaxing. great ambient started drifting off. very well done. i wanna see more of this for sure!

  • very simply

  • how long can you have the samples coz i might get a korg one if this isnt very long

  • Sample time is great, I've got a 1 gig card and you can fit hours of stereo on it, the sampler reads and writes directly frim the card too, so sample time is pretty much endless, you could have all pads with 10 minute samples etc. Cheers

  • hey do u play this through an amp and are all these sounds already on the sampler or are some from your computer as well?

  • None of the sound s are from the Roland itself, they're all from Reaktor 5 on my Mac. Thanks they're just individual tone on their own, but when put together you get that rich sort of texture.

  • up to 512 , u must mean up to 1 gb ,might as well get all u could get from it

  • This is great

im getting the SP-555 for christmas, hah, im excited to start sampling.

  • I need to get myself a memory card.

    I'll buy one tomorrow. :)

  • u can use more banks only if u stick some compact flash in it!...if im right...up to 512mb..I have the same sampler...and im using all banks... derzhis!

  • no, it'll take up to a 1GB CF card, that's 6 hours of recording time. Just upgraded from the 303 to the 404 today, loving it!

  • This is amazing.

This is what persuaded me to buy my Sp404.

I'm still a little rusty, and can't get good samples, and i don't know how to use the "c/g d/h e/i f/j" banks...

    Can anyone help?

    x

  • use your manual :P

  • I approve. Curious where your sample set comes from - home built, found/purchased, a mix of the two, or something weirder?

Also - give us a direct audio feed and no camera mic noise! It's worth it.

  • Thanks for your comments, I made the samples in some Reaktor 5 patches software (native instruments, some of the samples are just sine tones at varying frequencies and envelopes, some are slowed down noise run through comb filters and colour chord processors, then I try to re-sequence them live.

Thanks again, I checked your stuff out too, very good. Cheers.

  • beautiful.. u got feeling ...soulful...the touch....!

  • Thanks

  • wow, how much did you pay for that?

  • Think it was around £220 from Digital Village

  • Fucking beautifull man!!

  • thatnks for posting you probably singlehandedly persuaded me to get one ; p

  • very nice. much different style than what is expected from this machine!

  • awsome stuff

  • I`ll get mine coming week...

how about midi clocking it ?

  • Its got MIDI in, so will sync up with any other device. Ive used it with a korg electribe and a macbook, no problems.

  • This is very good stuff. Seems like a fun machine to play with. The high pitched squeaks are a bit loud for my taste but great work nevertheless. Lovely digital sounds.

  • This is great stuff...i listen to it over and over ...wish it were a 30 minute groove...makes me want to run out and buy a roland to try and learn how to create some a this...how hard is it to learn? where do you find these samples?...i think you are very skilled.

  • Thanks for you comments. The sampler is quite easy to use, its just a case of getting the samples you want to use, then experimenting. I got the sample from Reaktor 5 (software instrument) then bounced them down to audio files I also used some sine waves at various frequencies (the high pitched stuff). Thanks again for listening.

  • This is great stuff...i listen to it over and over ...wish it were a 30 minute groove...makes me want to run out and buy a roland to try and learn how to create some a this...how hard is it to learn? where do you find these samples?...i think you are very skilled.

  • thats good

and sneezing sounds fit together creepy

  • thats good

and sneezing sounds fit together creepy

  • that roland machine, is it any good?

  • Yeah, for the price it's wicked! sample editing features aren't great, but I edit most of my samples on a laptop anyway - its perfect for live use; manipulation and sequencing samples etc.

  • ill shit! and yeah it's sp-forums(dot)com

post some more videos if you can

  • Hey man nice soud you've got there.

Anychance of telling where you got those samples from??

  • Some of them are from Reaktor 5 put through a sort of colour comb-chord filter, like a vocoder, some are just sine waves at different frequencies with various amp envelopes.

  • great video!!! the forum is sp-forums see you there!

  • I really liked this, different from most uses of samplers. Great Stuff!! Keep it up!!!

  • Haven't been on any forums, didn't know there was any, do you have link for it? Thanks

  • thats like groove planet or something. have i seen u on sp-forums. interesting stuff.
