  • Don't try to compare Tolkien VS Howard by the movies of theirs tales,,,,, read them,............ My winner is Howard

  • almost an entire montage of people looking down.

  • While Howard is the creator of "sword and sorcery" fantasy, Tolkien was the creator of "high fantasy", so while he probably was inspired by Howard, Tolkien's fantasy is still somehwat different to Howard.

Either way, I love both authors, and both of them should be credited as the duo that created fantasy in general. They're not only two of the greatest fantasy writers of all time, but two of the greatest writers of all time in general.

HAIL CONAN THE CIMMERIAN, AND HAIL BILBO BAGGINS!!!!!!!!!!

  • Tolkien came years after Howard, and yes he was taking his cues from Howard...just about everything Fantasy related was borrowed from Howard, even to this day nobody fleshes out a character in so few words as howard did...he was by far one of the most influential writers who ever lived!

  • 40 years ago, I got hooked on conan, and no action writer, can equal him. he was the best of the best.

  • I think the still at 1:37 is my all time fav... I love the look in his eyes... *sigh*

  • He has created the greatest character in the world,i have all the books about Conan, great, great fantasy!!!I belive that, like Tolkin he has conntected to some other reality where sword and magik rule the world...a better place perhaps no utube thou

  • A Great Man , A Great Writer,A Great Artist........

    In Three Words..........

    Robert Ervin Howard

  • i will never forget being blown away after reading The "Tower of the Elephant" that was one of the greatest fantasy short stories i have ever read. I pray that the new remake shows the real Conan that all of us REH fans grew to love. Its a shame the way his life ended but to me he is still alive through Conan.

  • The Twin Gates

    The gates of Hades stand ajar;

    above the portals, blazing clear

Are words that may be read afar:

    "Abandon hope, who enter here"

Above life's portal stands a screed

Where, through the mist of approaching near,

The quivering, unborn soul my read:

    "Abandon hope, who enter here"

    Robert E Howard

  • this lovely video is still one of the best on youtube

  • Tolkein and Howard are at oposite ends of the fantasy seprectrum.

  • Yep.

Howard's Work - Genius, to the point, wonderfully creative, dark, savage, electric, energetic and overall superb.

Tolkein's Work - Genius, dragged out, wonderfully creative, classic, sophisticated, drab, fantastical, and overall . . . not worth sitting through three books of scenery detail.

I may be bias, mind you. Don't listen to nothin' I have to say. XD

  • That and Tolkein is boringly religious.

  • @almanacofsleep

Howard is 'hard and realistic' fantasy adventure with some elements of sci-fi.

Tolkein is more 'soft and magical' fantasy.

  • I like COnan cause its diferent to the Tolkien High Fantasy you get nowadays. I like how in Howards stories there is no good or evil just shads of grey. Also some aspects of Conan are quite dark as he does do a fair amount of rape and pilliage , were as Thoth Amon sort of comes off as a anti hero rather then out and out villian.

  • @almanacofsleep

I disagree, you obviously aren't up to speed on Conan.

Conan never rapes a woman and only kills when he is betrayed via capture.

Some of the other characters are more open to rapine, in fact in one of the story's an adventurer in the desert considers raping the girl he's rescued having killed her captors, but decides not to when she is completely innocent to the ways of the world.

  • I'm pretty sure the first Conan stories were written by him, then where taken over by overs after he died.

  • he wrote quite a few didn't he?

  • To be fair he had been battleing with servre deprssion for most of his life. And when she did slip into a coma he was told she wouldn't recover I think thats when he snapped, remember most of his later day Conan books were written so he could pay her medical bills!

  • A great tribute.

  • Simply wonderful. Thank you for this visceral awakening.

  • Best Movie EVER, should have been nominated and won for Best Picture that year! Vincent is AMAZING in this and should have won an Oscar for his role in this, "The Whole Wide World". Thank you for this video, I have seen the movie, I MUST buy this DVD. Renee and Vincent were awesome together; so heart wrenching...shame on the real Novalyn Price for her behavior towards Robert E. Howard; Read Novalyn's true book, "One Who Walked Alone", that this movie was based on...

  • thank you for this. it was just what i needed.

  • REH the best!!

  • Hey, awesome job! I just saw TWWW again for the 2nd time (the 1st about 6 mos ago) I forgot how it had ended...what a beautiful but sad story-I literaly gasped at the end and cried. Vincent became Robert E Howard.

  • Being a huge fan of both Robert E. Howard and Vincent D'Onofrio, I thought this was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.

  • Thank you, this was awesome. This is by far one of my new favorite movies, amazing story, and Vincent D'Onofrio.... yum!!!

  • YOU HAVE THE MAGIC TOUCH! I just watched in complete shock at how you put it together, and the music...too much....I must say, you are excellent at this...you got my vote!
