This is great...and it's the same year '88 that I brought my five girlfriends to the Maple Leaf Gardens in a limo dressed in bikinis to meet David finally, after being on the road singing 'Ain't Talkin' Bout Love', and we were all so drunk on champagne we were all dumped on the sidewalk by the CPI crew. My producer was robbing me for my record production money and used the party to defame me so he'd get away with robbing me for the 5G! I still have never met Diamond Dave but I just love him so!
@weiisky1, you couldn't be more wrong. Have you ever heard Roth fingerpick? You can find clips on the internet if you look hard enough. The guy is a badass with an acoustic.
"pft. dlr can't play guitar, he just had someone tune it for him so he could barre the chords."
say what? so keith richards can't play the guitar either ... even though that was a dubious example haha? Or Jimmy Page, Adrian Belew or Michael Hedges? or a majority of slide guitarists? or loads of folk guitarists are doing it wrong using OPEN TUNINGs (google is your friend). how stupid of me to think of it as an respected art form.
@weiisky1. Dave is actually quite capable on guitar. The acoustic guitar in Take Your Whisky Home as well as the beginning of Ice Cream Man, just to name two, are both played by the one and only DLR.
Who is it to DLR's immediate left? That is the Skyscraper Tour, so his lineup was Steve Vai, Gregg Bissonette, Matt Bissonette, and Brett Tuggle I believe.
Gregg and Vai are easy to pick out.
I would assume Matt is on the stand up bass, so that leaves Brett, but he was the keyboardist, didn't think he played guitar as well, but maybe.
David Lee Roth? Only one of the best singers and performers I have ever had the pleasure to see live! And he is the nicest guy to! At 13 I called in to a radio station he was at, giving an interview. I was a lucky caller who got to talk to him. He was very gracious to this 13 year old girl! I have nothing but good to say about him, he will always be one of my faves!
He's not afraid to try anything, and succeeds in most everything, this is an amazing talent, and a very intelligent, articulate and interesting man. Multifaceted, always interesting and funny.
Dave did this song live with Steve Vai playing guitar in Sydney 18th October 1988. Anybody got that Sydney concert video converted to digital yet? I saw a few people there with Sony cams in the isles right next to me.
Dave also did "Wake Up Little Susie". I've got the sound recorded on an audio cassette somewhere in my garage but it might be a bit frail now. This is pretty good quality right here vid for 88....
I thought richie sambora sucked bad but.. this sucks in a completely new and unique way....ever the innovator.. stick with the overblown vocals and high wattage PA with a ton of echo and voice modulation that we know and love
@Stevie1Stifler, you're crazy man. Any rational person would agree that this version sounds pretty good. Good harmonizing, in tune, and showing respect to a classic song. Dave does a good job here.
@rch9000 2 true I am a crazy man.. I can't deny it.. although I've never been in prison so I can't be that crazy... Im sorry bro..I think Dave is one hell of an entertainer and in his prime second to none really at motivating an audience..I mean you see Sammy go out there and just plop down like a couch potato and Dave goes out there and puts out serious energy.. if I want to hear a slow ballad though you can't beat Buddy Holly for my money..
@Stevie1Stifler, I agree with every single one of your points. I just also happen to think this version is pretty good. Unexpected from Roth, and a pleasant surprise in my opinion. As far as Samobra goes, yeah, you called that one spot on!
I like that twang Dave it putting on the vocals. The backing band are all top of the food chain, knockout virtuosos, it is almost ridiculous the amount of talent on that stage.
@WhoKilledCallo he plays the intro to ice cream man, and thats a pretty damn good little bluesy number there. Considering he was with eddy van halen, of course he's not nearly as good lol but hes got one great voice!!
Just noticed your reply. We got a couple of thumbs down, but I suggest we stand strong ; ) "Surprisingly not the disaster I expected"...ROFLMAO...exactly.
And thanks...I like my user name a lot...I use it everywhere. It comes from another really great song.
Dave is playing chords set to an open tuning which means without putting his his left hand on the frets the guitar is tuned to an open A. Simple. His left index covers one fret for a chord and there you have it.
The point is he can do a Classic song and not fuck it up. Now the better question for you is, where is the point.?That would be on the top of your head kid. Ed
This refutes all the rumors over the years that Diamond Dave had pitch problems, couldn't remember lyrics had and relied on shouting. WRONG! Here we see a solid singer showing his excellent taste in classic rock - singing with respect and reverence, solidifying his place in Rock History.
I saw VH on the 1984 tour. At the end of the show he was shitfaced and forgot the lyrics to "Ain't Talking 'Bout Love" during the encore. He evidently straightened up by 1988.
DLR has certainly never been one to cater to the lowest common denominator. He marches to his own beat for sure. A musician plays, an artist challenges.
Winners, they come and go. Legends, they're forever.
yeah maybe, but this song was written by paul mc cartney, credited to lennon/mc cartney. check it on the album. it was mostly written by paul, so do your research before you say a biased comment like that.
Dave has such a unique voice and yet it fits so well into so many different types of songs.
