I listened to this performance again and my opinion has not changed. The tarantella is a fast dance, but the way Mr. deMaine played it, it was undanceable, just WAY too fast. Also, perhaps because of the extreme speed, the performance lacked the dynamics that would make it interesting. I have to say that my 11 year-old daughter's playing of the piece is far more exciting, if less perfectly played.
@FractalBob At the age your daughter was playing Tarentella, Demaine was performing Rococo Theme in front of orchestras.
But it is still up to opinion- I respect that. ^^ However, I thought it was a bit of a stretch when you talked about your 11 year old daughter being better than a professional.
@FractalBob are you stupid? Did you see the expression physically he gave???? and he can play it fast and it sounds almost perfect. the notes aren't slurred and the shifts are amazing. that was very fast, but he can play with no problem that way, while on Tv.
Amazing how a piece like the tarantella can be transformed into an an amazing concert showpiece in the hands of a virtuoso like deMaine. WOW!!! Best upbow staccato I've ever seen.
Bobby - you should have a show talking about classical music -- and playing some of course -- you're fun to watch and speak very well and with passion -- people need classical music education - especially the non-instrument-playing among us! (I know your sister Donna -- all of you are SOOOOO talented!)
Keep your eye on this guy. As a former cellist myself as well as a lifelong concertgoer and music lover, I recognize Demaine's immense gifts as an effortless technician, and among the warmest, most natural musical talents on the scene today.
DeMaine is simply a phenom -- unsurpassed technique, the most natural musical sensibility, and a humble human being. Do everything you can to hear and see him play!
Spectacular. Bravo!

I performed this when I was 13. Great piece but he was too fast.

Way too fast and played without much feeling, IMHO. If it were a race, he'd win.

Wonderful performance! I wish the camera could have let us view the bowing more as well. Disappointed they talked over the music (ending).
