I think Eric Johnson is from a future era where musical and mathematical precision down to the quantum level are taught from the time of birth. "John's son" is *obviously* a reference to him being an alter-ego of John Titor, the web's most famous time traveler. There is no other way to explain his uncanny abilities. He needs to do a work with Brian Eno, whom I also suspect of being a time traveler. Seriously, who ever heard of an "Eno" before him? It's almost Orkan in its tone.
Normally i don't like jazz! it's kinda too tricky and non-melodic to me! but this guy just makes it melodic all along with the tricky stuff ! He's got it all figured out !
@BrianGuitarShred yea i know he plays fast like in Cliffs Of Dover I'm just saying in this video he isn't and he makes it sound amazing. Everyone today thinks you need a really cool lookin guitar and huge amps and everything to be good but eric can just play simple stuff and still kick ass
@funkman082 Watched your video. You think this is better than EJ? It wasn't bad, not trying to dog you out. But, it wasn't better. Just my opinion, which, probably isn't worth much more than a bucket of manure.
@xSnoweyexp for instance. check out jonathan kreisberg. listen to "five bucks a bungalo" starting at 1.25 and "twenty-one". eric johnson CANNOT play jazz. and ya i have an idea about what i am talking about and probably better than you do. i am a jazz guitar major so i play jazz and this clearly isnt. and im serious. listen to those songs.
@funkman082 I always have the feeling jazz musicians think they are better than the rest :S WHo cares if this is pure jazz or not. If music is enjoyable than its good to me !! I'm not a fuckin musicdoctor or something. There arent many guitar players out there that can play all kinds of different styles like EJ. Ofcourse this isnt really the orthodox jazz but does it really matter ? Not to me, Eric is one of my biggest influences !!
@xSnoweyexp1 thing I disagree with, if I may. You say he ca play many styles. Well... do you really think that he plays many styles? Every time I hear him play, it always sounds like him. I think he has that one style, his own one. Really, guitarists shouldn't be pinned down by "styles", music is music, surley all players should be able to play something musical over everything? It's why jazz player know that they're better than other players. Shredders tend to think in scales, not in music.
@ibanezbloke Shredders tend to think in scales, ehmmmm so every shredder is exactly the same ?? So what u are trying to say here is that Jazz players are the most musical and best musicians in the world. Mmm i think jazz has some really cool stuff going on but why do we always compare and put people in certain places. I enjoy listening bach as much as Slash, it depends on the mood i'm in. If you only love jazz , sure go ahead no problem there are no rules in music !! do you even like eric ??
@xSnoweyexp Not every shredder is the same, but a lot of the time there isn't a whole lot of variety. The ammount of times I've heard shredders say something along the lines of "and this line is an A minor scale in groupings of 3". That's great, but it's an exercise. I do like Eric, but every thing he plays sounds like Eric to me, I don't here 1 tune as country and another as rock. For the record, most shredders play technical exercises, while jazzers play melodic ones, we all know that's true.
@ibanezbloke Myes , well i think u mean shredders like michael angelo batio , i must admit i don't like players like him he plays like robotic scale machine scales up and down as fast as possible. Thats true !! Phrasing is soo important and a lot of players seem too forget that its about the music rather than all the crazy techniques, if ur a great player with a lot of technique than its good but if you miss the improvising skills than its boring yes. The best music came from people with fantasy
@xSnoweyexp I think you should be able to pick up another instrument and sound pretty much the same. If you're playing different lines on a guitar than on a saxophone, there is something seriously wrong - that means your fingers are dictating, not your mind. Its annoying for me - I'm a decent guitar player but in the past few years I've just really started dislining my instrument. I love music, but I wish I'd picked up something else instead.
@ibanezbloke guitarists DO sometimes have Meaningless Shred Disease, but your premise is entirely off-base. Each instrument demands its own idiosyncratic approach, and while a musician brings themselves and their knowledge to whatever instrument they play, it would be slightly ridiculous to expect someone to produce the same sounds from a banjo that they would an upright bass or a full-sized pipe organ. If one plays the same on every instrument, it means one is a dilettante with them all.
@funkman082 Sorry to tell you from another jazz guitar major to another, this IS Jazz. While he isn't rippin bop lines everywhere, it definitely falls under the immense umbrella of Jazz...
@mattjazz3 alright i am not talking about shredding as in metal or gay shit like batio. im just talkin about his pentatonic shit. im using "shredding" as a general term.
I don't think the drummers speciality is jazz... But maybe they wanted that particular groove/feel to it. But (another but), his fills wasn't very "jazzy". But (final one, I promise) nice playing anyway =)
By the way, the chord progression is just the same as in "autumn leaves". I think the bass player is Jimmy Haslip.
Great video =)
