"The song itself was conceived during a very dark period in Reznor's life. When on stage in 2009 he disclosed that he had rented a house at the time on an ocean with the external intent to write some music, but in reality had contemplated suicide there. This song was the only song to come out of that time and place. He still feels strange playing it live because it serves as a reminder of this dark period in his life."

@TripleWeasel not only as into the void, i think other songs of this album have similarities as in The downward spiral. Its like a theater play all songs are connected and at the same time are very diffrent. This is a great song, very diferent from into the void.

A lot of people already know about the "suicide letter" in the background of the song.

Yes, those are the actual french lyrics. It's an aristocratic way of speaking - like the French equivalent of Olde English. No francophone I know would use the words "marteler" in this context though. It'd be more like "je deviendrait or deviendra" - French grammar is much harder than speaking.

@TheAaron87 I have 'La Mer' tattooed on my right shoulder. When I first bought this album I hated it because it didn't sound like NIN. But as I kept on listening to it, the album really made a difference in my life in relation to where I am now. I know this sounds dorky, but this song in particular helped me through a lot of problems that followed after I bought the album. I always go back to this album when I thinking of ideas to paint or write, or just to enjoy life.
