The illustrations REALLY set the tone for the books. I didn't know they weren't in the UK versions. I'm glad I've got the US versions. Using scratch board seems SO much harder than just drawing the images but I guess that's what gives them at unique appearance.

I really think these illustrations pull these books together. I read a UK version with small illustrations at the beginning of each chapter, no black pages with white text, and didn't find it scary. I guess I needed the illustrations to help my imagination.

I read the first six books in the US (so the books with these illustrations in them). Am now living in the UK and just read book 7. Wasn't the same experience without these fantastic/creepy illustrations.
