I always loved playing Starflight for the space exploration aspect, but that UQM starmap gave me a real tingling in my pants. So much to see and do! And new places to die!
I LOVE this game i found it a few years back i was maybe 12 i sucked at it....but i loved it and played way to much of it XD. maybe now i should replay it....and finish it lol
I want to love this game, I really do. The story begins off great, and you have so many choices. But I found the combat absolutely terrible, in both controls and feel. Terrible enough to just not play the game.
I hope you do decide to run the full game; there aren't very many complete LPs of it (the only one I was able to find with some basic YouTube searches was a Longplay without commentary; the other LPs threw their hands up in surrender half-way through.)
That is one hell of a fucking awesome storyline. How come all the damn space games have mind-blowing storyline where your average game has a horrible one?
Oh god, not the moonbase. We'll be lucky if you get through the dozens of attempts necessary to beat that battle part by even the halfway point of the next video.
It's really the Ur-Quan Masters one large fault. It's like the developers were trying to get people to quit early on, way too large of a difficulty spike.
I sincerely hope you do end up finishing this one. Just put it on the back burner if you don't feel like playing it, but come back to it eventually. I don't care if it's years later, I want to see you play this semi-blind.
For it's age, this game has some pretty nifty dialogues, especially the Ur-Quan sound awesome, as in, awesomely creepy.
My only question, is the starmap as impressive as it seems, or is it more of a daggerfall approach where there's only a small number of unique places and the rest is pretty much copypasta ?
@PaulTDGreat Each star system is unique, but they're not all worth exploring. I don't remember if there are any stars with zero planets, but there are stars with only one, and it'd be a waste of your fuel and/or time to travel there.
Haven't been able to check how well it works, but I think it'd be fun to have a SuperMelee tournament with some of the VA regulars. "I win!" *planet gravity well slams ship into oblivion* "Dammit!"
7:28 - The joystick controls are still broken? Aww, sad.
10:24 - You need to go a bit further afield, Grimith, to find where you came from. It is close, but beyond your current fuel range at the start of the game. Ahh, there, you found it. Huzzah!
19:52 - If I recall correctly, if your lander gets destroyed here, you can get ONE more from the starbase (they'll make it for you), but after that, you're screwed.
@ScreamingDoom Ah, that's awfully generous to newbies (and people who don't believe in saving the game as much as I will), allowing the creation of one more lander. I just presumed you were screwed and didn't bother pleading for a lander.
@GrimithR Yeah, most of the... puzzles? Quests? Events? ... in the game that you can fail have at least one other way to get what you need (even if it is painful). One of the less forgiving events is at the very beginning of the game if you leave the Sol system before talking to Commander Rave DJ.
@ScreamingDoom The game is generous on that regard, especially since you need several items to complete the game and you might completely whiff on finding out how to obtain them in such a vast galaxy. Even after... uh, well, I won't spoil anything in my own comments, but I'm sure you know towards the end when Bad Things Begin To Happen, you can still obtain some of what you're missing.
One would think you could just lp this game however you would plan on playing it alone and to hell with any naysayers. I would enjoy reliving this game vicariously though you no matter how you played it.
Wow! I had no idea this game existed, much less that it is free and open source. It's even in the official Fedora software repositories. You're not kidding with how squirrely the spaceship controls are. It doesn't help that the ship takes a thousand hours to rotate.
@thedeathcat The ship rotates better with more turning jets. It's also easier to steer if you don't do what I do later and load it with 9,000 thrusters.
@gm3dgames Haha, I must have infected you somehow. If I were really reading that introduction, though, I would have mocked the numerous applications of ellipses.
Sadly it seems with the HUGE amount of people who lets play starcontrol 2, I have seen NO full let's plays of the game. I'm really into the story.

@BoboTheVulture YOU SERVE THE WILL OF THE WARCHIEF!
There's no telling what the humans are doing to themselves under the slave shield. Perhaps we shall find out in the future.
Also, it's a shame we can't enable an option to have the Starbase Commander always talk to us in Rave Mode.

The precursor ship you start with reminds me of the default terran transport hull types in GC2.
