  • thanks for explaining so well the true meaning of Northern Soul-

    good music never dies -

it just keeps on keeping on !!

  • One great guy who loves his Northern Soul like me

  • Anyone know what the title/artist of the song at 5:50 ?

  • @bloodywomble The Metros, since i found my baby on RCA

  • Much of Northern Soul has similar roots to our Southern US "Beach Music," which has a huge (largely white) following -- especially in the Carolinas, Virginia, and Georgia. The music is uptempo R&B (rooted in the 50s/60s), with a 4/4 shuffle beat of moderate to fast tempo. Many of the same songs are found in Northern Soul. The Beach Music dance evolved from 50s "bop" dancing, with earlier roots in the Lindy Hop and Jitterbug. It's called the Carolina Shag (no relation to the British meaning!)

  • ARK OF THE HEART TEAR

  • hi all

  • hi all

  • Some quite strong opinions on this thread, what you should all remember is that we (white, black, brown, yellow or whatevever colour you can think of) just love the music and the scene, people's jobs are unimportant, if you like someome you like someone, easy as that. There is so much bs about how you should think nowadays it's brainwashing the working class (by the way, if you go to work you are working class). Keep the faith all soul brothers and sisters.

  • Dance Style: The origins is based in North Country Dancing all as mentioned below plus Lancashire Clog Dancing and the American Cake Walk. So please, this is a lifetime study for a soulie, we appreciate you comments and thank-you for listening but please: speak with knowledge or, as we all do when we start out, be quiet, watch and learn. We recognise another soulie simply by their OWN dance style, you never forget a pair of feet! Happy New Year to you all. KTF

  • as for you comment

"black Americans (even some 60s and 70s soul artists) don't even know what 'northern' soul is..": if you were to look at some of the posts on these clips you would see that we are indeed 'educating' the "interested" Black Americans about the lost music heritage of theirs that they have never heard of. So that is of no surprise for you to say such a thing. So although you are reasonably eloquent in your statement that does not hide the fact you are terrifically uninformed. KTF

  • Can't believe what I am reading here below...That attitude was on the football terraces when we were all dancing our frustrations of a working week out on a dancefloor. Stop baring your teeth about something you have no need to defend. It is something that is for joy and entertainment and as with all true loves brings real comraderie and bonds built for life. Remember, if we have to explain it, they'll never understand it. Pity them in their ignorance.. KTF

  • How ironic that this video ends with a shot of ballet dancing.Soul music in general is great but I think it's plain to see why this 'northern' soul genre has stayed underground. The style of dance is an odd white manifestation of soul dancing, which appears unnatural and inappropriate.Perhaps this is why you rarely see a black face at 'northern' soul events? What's even stranger...black Americans (even some 60s and 70s soul artists) don't even know what 'northern' soul is.Great music. Odd scene.

  • @Umskiddy: Thank you for your polemic of a working class past time. Juxtaposing it with ballet dancing, a white upper class 'skill', was neat. The hint of 'racism' within the genre you identify appears to be emblematic of your total ignorance.

Your critique suggests that Northern Soul to be an ephmeral 'scene', but how has it has lasted 40 odd years?

To conclude, stop being a perjorative cunt and leave us working class people alone.

  • @t0mme1981 Didn't mean to offend. However, I have since learned that my thoughts are echoed by a number of high profile soul djs, namely, Trevor Nelson, Jazzy B, Nornan Jay etc.. I love soul music of all generations. I was simply stating that this 'northern' soul scene is very insular and very white. The style of dancing is strange and simply does not connect to black music or culture. Take a look at some of the Soul Train vids. You'll clearly see how the dancers move appropriately to the music.

  • @Umskiddy: Trevor Nelson, Jazzy B don't they come from the centre of your universe, sorry I mean London? Ah, they must know everything then!!

Do a bit of self reflection mate. Why do you despise any folk traditions of the white English Working Classes? Do you also laugh at Morris Dancing from your self-righteous tower? I bet you also raise your nose at our 'Chavs' enjoying themselves on a Friday/Saturday night.

Your failure is in your inability to 'let yourself go' after a hard days work.

  • @t0mme1981 What is your hang up about your working class status? I certainly see no problem with it.I also have nothing against our white working class traditions. From your northern soul perspective, I just find it strange and extremely odd that a scene which was built largely from 1960s black music has virtually no black participants and adopts a style of dance which has no links to American soul music or black Americans both now or in the 1960s.You can't blame the average person for asking.

  • Keep the faith fella !

  • wow - what a real eye opener for me. so strange seeing someone so passionately into music completely different to my own taste. Made me dizzy watching it. haha...

  • The man seems both Green and Clear, top Stelladex - so spansule!

  • when soulies used to get arrested at soul dos for takin phetes i dont know bout you but i think this is a clue why we got caught there was a copper in the do lol RICKY@NOTTS

  • keep on keeping on buddy .....

  • 4:04

  • It would be interesting to see how differant some of these comments would be if the story didn't mention his job? if you can't look past the uniform, maybe you should be taking a harder look at yourselves. Keep up the good work Noggsy, on and off the dance floor!

  • whats all this then . DANCING ON WHITE POWDER.

  • gud on ya mate keep on keeping on

  • I think it is a common factor, the plod are good when they are on their feet. Keep it up mate it brings back good memories!

  • All coppers are......

    born dancers.....

    Parkside my fav nick

    Keep on keeping on .

  • everyone dissing him for being a copper, well mate he has a living to learn, he's clearly not a dickhead and the way he's acting at the end he's probably still on drugs! haha!

  • love the casino pics

  • reply to qahtani, dude get to the uk !, i would love people -who were into soul then, to get into it - here and now !,i have wished for years ,that detroit had a rare soul club/all night dance scene -it should have!,i presume [maybe wrongly] that its old news and would'nt draw a crowd, and detroits run down + violent !?,maybe barrack should get into a bit of what we call northern soul. !!, the world would be a better place,he probly is ! PS try soul source web site for worldwide events.b good p

  • as long as there are lips to be kissed love will never die or say bye as my eye will all ways blink and wink wink and lips to slide my lips against and steal a kiss for it is not a crime .

  • well said and true

  • yeh true back drop or angel dive, well said

  • tolkin powder to take the swet away from the floor because many dance none stop

  • I'm from the US and grew up playing my mother's soul 45s; that tradition has kept on into adulthood. A week rarely goes by that I don't purchase some vinyl.

I recently learned about the UK's Northern Soul scene and it fascinates me. It looks like pure, innocent fun, great music and best of all -- an obsession with finding rare and classic records. I wish we had a similar scene here.

  • very good, cant remember what the tunes is at 2;24

  • Yer right he's boring' wonder what he'd be like with an handful of black bombers down his neck nooooooooooooooooooo...............

  • The soul records touch the soul.Soulies are obsessed with the greatest records ever made.Songs that have changed our lives. That's the reason.

  • kub90210 what a fuckin bore

  • ruokonie-I noticed your from Finland.

I'm half Finnish ancestry. We know, my being "a bore" certainly is not related or due to this primarily inherent melancholic temperament.

I'm actually very damn proud of this part of me.

Just accept we are white, lacking "that" real soul that blacks provided. We excel in other ways.

Indeed, it is such a fine thing that we find enjoyment in their music.

  • kub73158

Be honest, you are a contentious white guy, are you not? Go on, tell the truth!

You re-visit posts such as this to see what has fallen into your little trap.

  • Maestro knows all.I love it.Ain't no trap!

    Contentious,not really.

Look,I majored in psych & philosophy and simply want some other's intellectual/rational take on the huge attraction here.

I admit being heavy on inquisition;I just like to know purpose and reasons.

  • Just wondering-funny how these square white people get so charged up on music done by blacks.

I am one and really like some of it,but not a fanatic like some are.

Is it a lack of "soul",rhythm or something else that whites don't have and they look to this to "fill" a void?

Maybe some true expert can provide answers.

  • You obviously dont know that a great many northern soul artists were white and a vast number were not even from the states.Get your facts right before you post.

  • dizzyfergy-I do know that there were excellent white artists and those also from England as well;which include some of my very favorites.

  • these white folks arent 'square' mate, so he's a copper now well people get old but at the time i bet he was dropping gear like the best of them

look at most youth movements that start with raw music; mod, skinhead, soul, they are all white kids dancing and CONNECTING to black music. its not about lack of rythm or soul its just that these blokes dont need some existentialist white bread rock music to get their kicks. we want something to dance to!

  • Thanks jimmy,you're right.

The real best of the soul songs are among the coolest recordings ever; any musical genre included.Plus about the best to dance to.

  • @jimmypemis well said pity all the media ever want to talk about is boring rock music

  • I love this!

  • DOES ANYONE KNOW THE NAMES/ARTISTS OF THE SONGS IN THIS VIDEO??

I've been trying especially hard to find the first song...

  • Great music, great people.

  • Does anybody know what Temptation song is playing at 5:12?

  • That Temptations track is Truly Yours.

  • What about the Scottish Soul boy who wore tartan pants, just to keep his balls in check?

  • Sorry mate, from Wolverhampton myself, never really knew any of the Scottish lads. Stopped going in mid-1980 when the numbers really dropped off, but started again in Summer '81 and went to the last official night and last oldies night

  • The fast instrumental playing during the first set of dancing footage is Disco Connection by Isacc Hayes.

The first black guy, doing the handspring and spin, is Vernon, who I think came from Bradford.

The black guy dressed all in blue is Sparky, from Warrington, who won the dancing competition at the Sixth Anniversary (Sept 1979.

    Keep the Faith

  • yeah,i remember sparky knocking my friend john neilston from scotland out in early round of comp 1980,he re entered the next week and came second in final, do you remember any scots barney welsh in particular

  • Mmm... so what does he do when surrounded by good old fashioned amphetamine fueled soul boys?

Bust them or ask where he can score?

  • Hmm, sounds as if you went to the same places I used to frequent !

  • "twistedwheeliegirl66" says it all. I live on the south coast and met quite a few people who went to The Wheel regularly, best place down here was The Marina in Portsmouth and before that The Shoreline in Bognor, two great allnighters playing all the soul sounds of the day, long before the term "Northern Souls" was coined. Then when had funds started on Blackpool, Sheffield and Wigan. Four essentials for a great night were the gear, the clothes, The club (all night) and the music(soul)
