for the first trick it might be easier to light a match and put it inside of the cup for 10 seconds or so, then put the index card on it.

If you put the glass with saltwater on top, you should be able to see the food coloring rise to the top glass after a while. This is just conjecture, but given the logic of the regular water being less dense than the salt water, the more foggy salt water will begin traveling to the bottom while the food colored water rises to the top
