Idea #1: Great idea. I'm all for it

Idea #2: I'm sorry, but a balanced budget amendment from the same government who can't balance the budget is painting your house in horse manure and calling it a new shade of brown. Just because you make an amendment that says you should do it doesn't mean you WILL DO IT. Where's the "world peace amendment"?

#3: A 4% national sales tax ON TOP OF payroll tax, social security tax, state sales tax, etc. So more tax on the middle class? Is that what we need now?

There is one problem with the current balanced budget amendment: It says you can't run a deficit. Period. There should be a sentence that allows the government to borrow, if necessary, in case of national emergency (hurricanes, earthquakes, etc.).

There are many solutions to the debt problem and they are quite elegant. The point is this, solving the debt problem is not on the agenda of TPTB. The politicians take their marching orders from TPTB. That is why the military budget is off the table and cuts in spending are taken from the people. The president is a puppet, in a suit. The great depression lasted a long time as the government didn't spend any money, as the government spent money tooling up for heavy manufacturing during the war the economy improved dramatically. At that time the tax rates on the rich were much higher.

Good luck getting the Tea Party whack jobs to understand that decreasing expenses AND increasing revenues is the only way to solve the problem. It's not so much that there is a national debt. It's the amount that has gotten out of control. If the annual interest on the debt is lower than the annual rate of inflation, then it's actually cheaper to carry the debt. But for some to think eliminating this debt can be achieved without reducing spending and raising taxes is living in fantasy land.
