As others have pointed out, there's a lot of sci-fi that takes place in the past, and a lot of sci-fi concepts that eventually became true, but, regardless of that, Fern seems to have completely missed the contradiction between "it takes place in the future" and "it isn't real". If it's in the future, she can't know if it's (going to be) real or not.
OMG, is there a rule that comedy panel show creators have to either sleep with Fern Britton or let her be on 1 episode to get the bloody thing made?! She disses Dr. Who, who spends most of his time in the past - if she'd said she doesn't like it because, while the TARDIS can move through time AND space, it mostly ends up in the UK & the aliens all speak with a British accent, even the Daleks, she might have had a point (not that anyone else minds...).
@044orange044 Apparently, the extended editions are aired on Sundays at 11.55 PM and repeated on Mondays at 12.40 AM. I would be extremely grateful, too, if someone was kind enough to upload them.
The Independent has a very nice article about the science fiction debate: blogs.independent. co. uk /2012/01/23/room-101-why-fern-britton-needs-a-crash-course-in-science-fiction/
Anybody who thinks there's no science fiction movies set in the modern day obviously hasn't seen Terminator, Jurassic Park, Independence Day, Back to the Future or even E.T.
I don't really mind Fern throwing sci-fi into Room 101, but it sounds more like she had issue with Doctor Who, Star Wars and Star Trek than the whole genre...
@ArtificialIdiot yeah, it really seemed like she had issues with the whole space travel/ship, alien thing rather than science fiction as such. I get why people might not like that sort of thing...but to complain about it for being not real (as they also pointed out - that's why it's called FICTION) is quite stupid
@hopelesslypassive Davina McCall made the exact same argument about sci-fi during her appearance on the old show. I think their problem is more the fans who act as though it were real, but sci-fi is no longer alone in the universe in that regard. People even think panel shows are real.
@ArtificialIdiot Also... as the Doctor can kiiind of travel through time, and in fact the very first story line EVER of Doctor Who was set around him taking 2 contemporary English school teachers to the birth of fire, her "Why can't we have past and present set sci-fi?" whine is, how you say, redundant.
Enjoyed it a lot. I do like Danny, but what an odd thing to put in. I think he meant it to be lower quality panel shows and then tripped overhis argument and so on, but that was very strange. Don't mind Fern, she worked well with Mr. Webb.
@StickItUpYrBumGugle All of Danny's choices - coolness, punk, cheap comedy panel shows and, in the extended edition, news media - were not so much about the fact they exist at all, but how they've evolved from vibrant/noble pursuits into brash, enslaving monsters.
Total reboot, and I like it a lot. Frank Skinner is a wise and fair host, and Robert Webb, well he's always wonderful in every way. Go to hell, Fern Britton. GO TO HELL.
I am not British I am Bulgarian but I appreciate that you upload these shows as I have taken an interest in them. When is 8 of 10 cats usually uploaded :-)
I always felt a bit guilty about not quite liking Fern Britton because I couldn't think of a proper reason... Thanks to her usage of the word "dreary" and the context she put it in - guilt gone!
Dear Fern Britton, the fact that Robert could quote the first line of every Star Wars movie, doesn't make him a nerd. It just means he has seen at least 1 of the six movies...
I dunno how i feel about the new format, I used to love how you got a little window into the psyche of the guests in the original show, and the guest didnt have to be a comedian for it to be funny as usually youd find something really surreal out about them (Like Cilla and the Oxo cube oranges). Still, Frank Skinner's the perfect host so its bound to still be funny
the countless inventions alone (from mobile phones to space travel), that stem from the writings of Douglas Adams, H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, Isaac Asimov and the like, are proof that sci-fi has given more to the world than, I dare say, any other type of fiction!
How can anyone hate on this? I think it is a new refreshing take on the show. Now, they need to at least up the ratio of cool guests from 1/3 to 2/3. That is the problem. It is harder to have three good guests and episode than one guest and episode. In the old show, even if you didnt care that much for a guest, by the end of the show your newfound knowledge of the person would make you like them a little more.

Fern, "Room 101" from "1984" (Unless you think literature excludes SF)

Fern, if your teenage boys are up until 2am, it's not homework. They're just fapping. Nobody pre-university needs to be up until 2am.

As much as I like Frank Skinner .. I'm really sad that Paul isn't doing this anymore.
I know some people prefer Nick Hancock, but Merton is just so brilliant.

I will still give this a chance though.
