  • That melody is sweet

  • Legend, what I would give to had met him, introduced myself and shake his hand.

  • Just watch Blakey muting the cymbal with his left hand at 1:24. You could see his sensitivity on playing the drums or, just music.

  • I can see why Bill Bruford is a fan of this guy, hes got some serious chops!

  • sounds like dogshit combined with catpiss.

  • Incomparable. He was not only a genius on the drums, but a mentor to so many talented players. The Messengers were a jazz University of the highest calibre. I was fortunate to hear him live many times. Never disappoints. Roll on Arthur, roll on.

  • hear this joey jordison!

  • killin it!!! art is killin it

  • 17 people missed "like" button

  • @kakadu2xx Your comment is disappointingly unoriginal.

  • He makes faces when soloing, just like I do!

  • Woah. Ginger Baker used the same pinned ride cymbal as Art Blakey, I see.

  • warning, extreme exposure to Art Blakey's buzz roll might cause the following symptoms: loss of hearing capability (Blakey's fans know about this), lack of bone marrow, extreme feeling of being a sucky drummer, loss of the ability to listen to non-jazz messengers jazz, extreme euphoria, spandex-phobia, changes in drumming style to hope to achieve a perfect buzz roll, a non-ceasant buzz ring in your ears, lack of the ability to listen to shitty music, jazz adiction, inscrutable feeling of joy...

  • ....and for some reason people are saying justin Beiber is a great drummer. people also are thinking that bands like brokencyde are a good band. Music has really fallen hard...

  • A musical drum solo, not divorced from other instruments / instrumentals.

  • With a suit on!

  • haha what happened to all the black drummers?

  • @nicofernando1 The MPC happened.

  • @Jayisiss ha!

  • @nicofernando1 they all combined to create denis chambers

  • Chris Kim was here

  • I wish I started out liking jazz instead of fucking metal. Well bye bye metal drumming, hello real drumming.

  • @macarthur19 you can still like both. it's not a bad thing to just play everything on the drums.

  • if i could get my buzz rolls to sound jus half of wat his sound like i would totally be satisfied..favorite jazz drummer of all time..

  • the BEST drummer of all time.

  • Art was a flippn BEAST!!!!!!!

  • one fat thumbs up for buhaina!

  • 13 have no idea about drumming in general and they dont know that art is a LEGEND

  • 13 people must have no concept of jazz.

  • normally i think its a little lame when people comment something like "what were those dislikes thinking!" but really in this case, What were you thinking?

  • @damoniegetta - personaly, I was thinking that ART is a better drummer than those 13 people.

  • Pure art.

  • @JoeJacari well played

  • anybody know where this is played at/ where I can get the full footage?

  • "Son, don't try and read all the music; take some and leave some. And when you get in trouble...ROLL!" -Chick Webb to Art Blakey

To me Art Blakey's buzz roll is the best. Its just a solid wall of sound that creates a vacuum in your brain and melts your endocrine system.

  • @BillyWasAMountain , My pancreas hurts.

  • @BillyWasAMountain W IL DUCE

  • i like the sound of that kit..

  • Oh man, bop drumming.

  • what's the name of this song?

  • whats the name of this song?

  • Great drum solo by one of the ancients!!! can't say I care for the drum sound too much but it still was performed awesomely.

  • Art and Roy Haynes have to be my favorite jazz drummers. These guys set up everything we do today.

  • tight stuff

  • search: Amorphic drum .....( 1st video result ).

    what technique is this??

  • BLAKEY IS THE FATHER TO ALL THIS SHIT. RHYTHM EVOLVED BECAUSE OF BLAKEY. MEDICINE MAN AT HIS FINEST.

  • howa bout that...

    interesting as he ever was!

  • Art Blakey give me your hands!!!

  • Appreciate ?! whats not to appreciate? This fool is doing all kinds of impossible cross ups on a 3 peice kit ...

  • A musical drumming genious.

  • Thank you for posting this. Art Blakey is actually my cousin. Hes my dad cousin.

  • Amazingly quick stick speeds with what appear to be pretty heavy sticks for a jazz drummer. Love that Gretsch siund.

  • this is the hottest shit ever been looking for it on youtube for a long time

  • Anyone ever hear of the album, I believe called. Rhythm in motion. the entire album was composed of nothing but drums.

  • That guy certainly has a lot of energy, one minute drum solos, wohoo

  • BADASS.

  • this dude is shreding is a suit

  • 1:41 Gives me the chills. Perfect time to cut to a close-up of his face, *killing*... it's even killin' him.

  • he will be a death metal drummer if he's living in today's era...

  • @naplame to be fair, most of the jazz muso's i know today despise metal, do you think they'd be the same back then?

  • cool, super cool

  • Unf***inbelievable.

  • Yes!!

  • Lovely! I can hear where Ginger Baker has been influensed!

  • @Moonfast1 Good call! I was thinking the exact same thing.

  • And all in a shirt and tie - man at work.

  • Buddy Rich idolized this cat. He was Buddy's #1 inspiration. To me it all started with Chick Webb. I believe Chick was the first drummer to have a recording, actually. He and Art Blakey are my top 2 faves of all time. They had chops but could also groove. They both played for the music and really felt it. And Chick kicked that bass drum so hard that it had to be secured so he wouldn't kick it right off the stage.

  • My favourite drummer of all time....

  • The great thing about jazz is that less is more.

  • he's amazing... especially playing like that in that suit..... he must be really hot.....

  • "why didn't blakey allow whites in his band?"

Gotta know your jazz. Art DID have white people in the band. Who....Geoffrey Keezer, Joanne Brackeen, Valery Ponomarev, and more. Oh heard of a guy named Charles Frank Mangione aka.... CHUCK.

  • Blake played with David Newman, a black man, and Dr John, a white man, in Bluesianna. Plenty of guys are in bands with all black guys or all white guys. Doesn't mean much.

  • art blakey is fuckin ill..... ps moes is gay

  • Bu's Delight..fantastic song

  • Will definitely BUY this dvd soon.

  • why didn't blakey allow whites in his band?

  • I read somewhere that blakey didn't allow white people in his band? how come?

  • @stridegum1213 If were black growing up when he did I probably wouldn't either

  • @rubrbandball

    yea i guess so

  • I read somewhere that blakey didn't allow white people in his band? how come?

  • God damn Art Blakey is awesome. I love his energy and intensity.

  • No, I really don't understand what you're talking about.

  • raw talent!

  • @agorare wtf are u talking about?

  • nice!!!!!!!

  • Art Blakey was a MUSLIM!

  • @awesomewelles90 So what?

  • So mash'a'allah, all the great muslim musicians!

  • Art Blakey was one of the nicest, happiest players in the history of jazz. Who gives a crap what religion he was? Do you think he was born in Kenya, too?

  • A musicians spirituality and religion often (always?) influences their music. If John Coltrane didn't let his spirituality guide him to writing A Love Supreme then we'd all be missing something lovely!

  • yes actually he was but he converted to being a muslim later in his life.

  • I don't think you're right actually, he converted in his early career, before he made what are considered his more important and classic recordings with the jazz messengers etc. In fact the "Jazz Messengers" name derives from the fact that the prophets were called messengers. To Muslims Muhammad was the last messenger/prophet of God.

  • you sure? i mean it makes sense but in a

Britannica article i read it said later. or i may have misread... but whatever the case may be, he still kicks ass. and hes from my city :)

  • ibn buhaina!

  • CHECK OUT MY DRUM VIDS!

  • Art Blakey and Jazz Messengers is one of the best bands ever formed! Though I usually don't like jazz drum solos, it simply doesn't seem musical to me, may be I need to listen more ha?

  • @ACMetan

I also have a hard time listening to drum solos. But I think it's because I don't play the drums and don't fully understand what's good and what's not. I really have to practice listening to drums and playing some, then I think I will realize.

  • well... I play the drums. It's not related with playing or not; if you play a solo, which is music, it should be fun to listen by all other people. Most drum solos aim to be complex-hard to execute and mostly inconsistent in order to appear different from other solos. Since I'm a simple person, I prefer simpler, faster and more consistent solos. I guess preferences change over time.

  • This guy is amazing!!!

  • SPeechless!!

  • 2:07 swatting a fly that was bugging him?

  • just watched this it was on bbc4

  • Ha, so did I :)

Such an awesome song this is, incredible solo from all of the performers as well as Blakey himself. Really wish they'd put more of these on more regularly on BBC4.

  • @Xithon to be honest i watched this now im in love with jazz

  • which is the name of this song?

  • art looked like he was having a lot of fun there. nice vid.

  • this is awesome to a point of being scary. I'm talking about the dissonant chords at the end, duh! sc arrrrryryy1y1y!!!!1

  • Wicked. Not enough people appreciate these players anymore. its unfortunate

  • @OddManOut13 your right, to many people just like the singers and fast simple guitars of rock and other stuff and the words from simple songs, its a shame there are not very many people who enjoy music that is more than playing fast simple, catchy stuff.

  • @selector111 exactly!!! totally agree

  • @OddManOut13 Yeah I agree.I'm 19,and all of my peers would rather listen to cheesey, plastic mainstream pop like Lady Gaga. While I'm here collecting vinyl, and researching all kinds of music frim Jazz,Funk,Soul to ambient, folk and real Hip Hop.

I'm completely obsessed with Jazz drumming at the moment though, being a drummer myself,I really repsect and love what these guys are doing.Especially the odd timing and offbeats.

  • @Bacon4464 medeski martin and wood, some nice jazz there. i would honestly get the cowboy beebop soundtracks too. the songs tank...rush....bad dog no buiscuits kick some major but.

  • @OddManOut13 i kno rite hes my uncle so i would appreciate him anyway

  • very welled filmed, the angles are so interesting and the drumming superb

  • seko!!!

  • is thelonious monk on the piano?

  • WOOOW!!

  • Brilliant!!

  • ILL

  • power

  • they do have such dirty style but such grace and such, loud low tuned toms. i mean god. haha, its nuts man. love it nice post dude.

  • no one can say he didn't love what he did. just look at his face while hes playing. wow.

  • are those double handed crossovers at 2:06?

  • yeah , 121, 121, 121 ,121

  • what's the name of this song?

  • Thank you for posting this. What a cool monster on the kit.

  • I feel like he could kill me with his drums lol...Hits with such power. So good!

  • Excellent.............

  • grande

  • It's so good when he opens his mouth and looks up LOL

  • he's got dirty style....

thats what makes art one of the greatest

  • Buhaina's Delight !

Search for it, someone has the studio version posted.

Check out the other solos on it as well.

  • amazing

  • he play,s like an old man but he swing,s

    like he is 20 !

thats the(good) thing avout blakey !

    god bless you !

  • Art has so much power coming from his shoulders yet he's so relaxed in all he does

  • Awesome!!!

  • Hands down!

  • Art blakey is amazing, so much power, energy and feeling.

  • his traditional grip is very unorthodox in a classical or drum corp sense but it's also beautiful and the way he plays is perfect, the best drummers always seem to have their own technique that defines them, Blakey is no exception this is jazz perfection right here
