@zee2011 my dear sister :D. he talks to the parents first as a mark of respect for your family and to preserve their honor :D. after a guy approaches your parents according to "sharaa" (islamic law) you are given a chance to get to know each other for a certain time first and then the choice is yours my dear sister if you want to continue with the guy or not, so then ur rights are preserved.
