FISA is a compromise measure- maybe one you don't like- but at least it requires court order for wiretaps. I think it was better to vote for a constraint on the government than allow the administration to find loopholes. It was also a brave vote since he had to know people would ream him for it. BTW, Nader isn't doing anything unique this year and Ron Paul is a very nice man... but getting rid of the IRS and CIA is just a bit much.
No, actually, it doesn't require a court order for wiretaps. Read the law and you'll see it allows for periods of 67 days in which there is no need for a court order or a warrant or any approval whatsoever. Even if, after 67 days, a court decides such surveillance was uncalled for, then the U.S. government can keep the information it has obtained anyway. Does that sound reasonable to you?

Yes, Bob Barr. I've spoken to Mr. Barr personally. He was very critical of the PATRIOT Act (and this was back in 2003 when he was still a Republican).
He voted for the Patriot Act based on promises by the Executive branch never to use the legislation for cases not related to terrorism and only after he was able to get sunset provisions in the final bill.

The bill shields telecom companies from civil suits, not criminal liability, which Senator Obama has said will be applied when he is president. I'm not saying this is a good bill, I personally believe that it is a deification of liberty and that most of the government should be voted out of office for even acknowledging this bill as a good idea. It's unconstitutional, and my support for Obama remains only because he is the only good option we have left, their are no other real alternatives.
There are real alternatives, but they aren't quick, and they don't involve just one person and one election. Basically, the People need to be more active in politics, and hold their elected officials to accountable norms. It requires us to also be willing to use or force the use of tools such as impeachment, and to lay down (and stick) penalties for people with "power" who break the law, no matter their position.
I meant real alternatives as far as presidential candidates go, McCain would only make things worse, vote for Bob Barr or Nader if you want to, but they have no real chance of winning, Obama is the only candidate who's, as a whole, the best chance we've got for president right now. Oh, and FYI I recently read that Obama is trying to change the FISA Amendment to not include the immunity for telecom companies in the Senate Vote. That would make the bill an impediment of Bush's wiretapping.

FISA is a compromise measure- maybe one you don't like- but at least it requires court order for wiretaps. I think it was better to vote for a constraint on the government than allow the administration to find loopholes. It was also a brave vote since he had to know people would ream him for it. BTW, Nader isn't doing anything unique this year and Ron Paul is a very nice man... but getting rid of the IRS and CIA is just a bit much.

No, actually, it doesn't require a court order for wiretaps. Read the law and you'll see it allows for periods of 67 days in which there is no need for a court order or a warrant or any approval whatsoever. Even if, after 67 days, a court decides such surveillance was uncalled for, then the U.S. government can keep the information it has obtained anyway. Does that sound reasonable to you?

Clinton had three weeks to wiretap without a court order during his presidency, though I don't know if the government could keep the information at that time. You're right- the law sucks. But I think it is all this Congress could get through right now- Bush would have vetoed almost any stronger law to limit his authority. The question now is whether you want a Democrat who wants to change the direction of the White House or not.

Yes, Bob Barr. I've spoken to Mr. Barr personally. He was very critical of the PATRIOT Act (and this was back in 2003 when he was still a Republican).
He voted for the Patriot Act based on promises by the Executive branch never to use the legislation for cases not related to terrorism and only after he was able to get sunset provisions in the final bill.
He is against the Patriot Act more so then Obama, McCain, or any other candidate running.
And write-in votes for Ron Paul will not count!!

Not really, because Barr is one of the strongest opponents of FISA and the Patriot Act and now regrets voting for the Patriot Act.
Obama is NOT regretting his vote for FISA and as far as I know, is still defending his support for the FISA bill.

I'm a libertarian, a free market anarchist. Bob Barr is not only a liar but he supports or has supported many things that a true libertarian would never in a million years support. In short, he's not a real libertarian. Ron Paul is the real deal. He is a minarchist, but at the same time he is definitely a libertarian.
You are right about Obama, he supported the fascist FISA legislation and in truth he is just a tool of the power elite.

I will do the absentee ballot and Obama will NOT get my vote for going back on his promise and failing to stand firm against the pressure from the dark side.
Obama also fails to recognize the power of people's will. He does not seem to care what people think and is more keen on pleasing those who give him the cash.

Folks, you nee to see the bigger picture. By supporting this imperfect bill he can avoid being painted soft on terrorism, the main attack point of McSame and the GOP.
On the other hand, the constitution is the highest law, and any bill conflicting with the constitution or its amendments can be sent to the courts for repeal.
Obama himself said the bill was flawed, and as Prez he would have it revised to abide the constitution.

It's Unconstitutional .. thats all there is to it! Theres no way around it! Any public official that denies the constitution which they are SWORN is a traitor as far as I'm concerned. Respect the founding fathers FFS! I wish Ron Paul were still running. If theres no one else but McCain and Obama then I'll put in a vote of NO CONFIDENCE by not voting. Then I'll be able to sleep at night in the future in peace knowing I'm not responsible for fucking up this country even more.

I love this video. Couldn't have said it better. It doesn't seem to matter who we vote for, policy will remain the same.
There are a lot of countries in the world with opportunities and basic health care that don't waste so much time pretending to be a democracy.
America, love it or leave it. This used to be the slogan. "or change it" was my amendment. I'm beginning to see that we have lost the ability to change it.

I said this previously.. I can't believe I ever supported this guy. I'm effectively without a candidate. I have no choice but to write in a candidate. I'm not a Ron Paul supporter, but Ron Paul has consistently kept his values and has *never* betrayed them for a shot at the presidency. So fuck you Obama and your "change". Ron Paul gets my vote.

Well done. Supporting and defending the constitution are pretty much the minimum requirements in the job listing for POTUS.
Just as I wouldn't hire a plumber who refused to fix my plumbing or a consult with a doctor who refused to address my ailments or an accountant who refused to do my taxes, I cannot vote for a chief constitutional officer who announces he has no regard for the constitution.
Seems like a no-brainer.

The only problem is that this whole process is a joke on the American people to think that we actually have a choice. If I dont vote for Obama essentially i'm voting to elect McCain. I'm not sure what to do.

The electoral system of this country is in the shitter as it is, if you vote for McCain (and I in no way wish to tell you how to vote that is your business) you are going to get not only the same policies of Bush, but made progressively worse as time goes on. With Obama, as I mentioned earlier, you get the best shot we have right now, and at least he's trying to change the biggest problem of the Bill. No one is going to outlaw WWT while Bush is in power, but maybe we can slow it down.

That's silly. Can't a Democratic Candidate stand for the issues that We The People hold dear in our hearts? Do YOU care if your conversations are tapped or the next POTUS has the same power? Any candidate must be able to take a stance on constitutional law. Presenting the argument does't mean the person wants McCain. Why vote for the lesser of two evils? It is a right to express to candidates that which we want, expect. Which this his video represents quite well.

Barack Obama lost my vote too. This was an unforgivable betrayal. The only way to make it better, and get my vote back, is for Barack Obama to admit his mistake and vote against the FISA Amendments Act this week in the Senate.
However, Barack Obama will never get my TRUST back. That's lost for good.

The bill shields telecom companies from civil suits, not criminal liability, which Senator Obama has said will be applied when he is president. I'm not saying this is a good bill, I personally believe that it is a deification of liberty and that most of the government should be voted out of office for even acknowledging this bill as a good idea. It's unconstitutional, and my support for Obama remains only because he is the only good option we have left, their are no other real alternatives.

There are real alternatives, but they aren't quick, and they don't involve just one person and one election. Basically, the People need to be more active in politics, and hold their elected officials to accountable norms. It requires us to also be willing to use or force the use of tools such as impeachment, and to lay down (and stick) penalties for people with "power" who break the law, no matter their position.

I meant real alternatives as far as presidential candidates go, McCain would only make things worse, vote for Bob Barr or Nader if you want to, but they have no real chance of winning, Obama is the only candidate who's, as a whole, the best chance we've got for president right now. Oh, and FYI I recently read that Obama is trying to change the FISA Amendment to not include the immunity for telecom companies in the Senate Vote. That would make the bill an impediment of Bush's wiretapping.
