  • what a great game !!

I'm still learning from you videos hidetchi

    thanks :D

  • Hello Hidetchi-sensei, I have a question. Is it possible to promote two pieces at the end of the same turn? For example, if I drop a captured foot soldier into the opponent's camp, then on my next turn move a different foot soldier into the opponent's camp, could I promote both foot soldiers to gold generals at the end of that turn? Thank you for posting these videos, they have been so helpful.

  • @Got2BMoney No. You can only promote the piece you are moving in that move. Your dropped pawn would have to move to promote.

  • @backflipx84 You can always choose not to promote a piece that has entered your opponent's camp.

  • Dislike bar is the size of Justin Biebers'.

Oh and very good series. I WUV TIS GAEM NAO <3

Oh yeah, and considering the quality of English they teach in Japanese schools and the quality you're speaking, it's obvious you relearned it. Thanks <3

  • if u put a captured bishop in enemy camp and take it out it can promote is what he is saying

  • I love shogi however I cant play it that much because almost no one knows it here

  • @OverNightGaming Then you should play on 81 dojo!

  • very nice video thank you for your effort took me some time to find it though^^

  • I have a question...Can your promoted pieces move like the used to as well as like a Gold? So the lance can move like a gold, AND move completely forward?

  • @Strongbow520 No. The pawn, lance, knight, and silver simply become gold generals and give up their previous movesets. Only the horse and the dragon keep their original moves when promoting.

  • Nice..., Good to know there are things i do not know

  • Very good tutorial

but I have a question. You said, a piece can be promoted either when it enters or leaves the enemy camp, so is it like when it leave's the camp you can promote it anytime or is it an automatic promotion like when the pawn hits the last line of squares it can go?

and if it's not automatic promotion, how can you tell which of a pair of pieces got promoted?

    I might've missed something there....

  • @QuatreiZer0 You can choose not to promote in any case except for pawns, lances, and knights at the end of the board. You can tell whether a piece is promoted or not based on the writing on it. The writing on the promoted side is different from the front side.

  • Great!!! Thanks!! Haha, I loved the promotion sound effect! Cool videos.

  • wowww, great videos !! i'm gonna try watch them all (they are a few, lol) and than smash some asses, lmao

  • Thanks for the tutorial!

  • excellent job

  • ci...

  • can pieces only promoted when moved? or is it possible to have for example have a silver general threaten a piece on its back left, and if the piece moves behind silver, could it promote itself to gold? or would it have to move to be able to promote? Thanks you, great tutorials!

  • @Azukawa A piece has to move in order to promote. You can't make a promotion on the same square without moving.

  • Hi, I have 2 questions...

1.) I'm sure I know the answer for this one, but I thought I'd 100% confirm, can you drop a pawn into your first row, as in nearest to you?

2.) This one I don't know about, can you drop a pawn into the last row (Enemy Camp?) because you can't drop a piece promoted, so it can't move anywhere, right? Thanks in advance.

  • Please see the video of "Capture and Drop".

  • can the pawns promote in any row of the empty camp???

  • @orinablop Yup, but it's always optional. It seems like you'd want to promote a pawn the first chance you get, though, since it's pretty much pure advantage, new move set versus old.

  • Hi, another question for you, do you HAVE to promote a silver general on the last row? because it can move back without even promotion right? is it optional to promote it on the second last row, can you tell me more about Silver General on the 3 rows of Enemy camp please, thanks.

  • @vishalb you don't have to promote a silver general on the last row, since it can move back. The only reason that you MUST promote is if the piece cannot move anymore if you do not promote it (as explained in the end of this video around 7:10). So a silver in the last or second last row can still move diagonally backwards, so promotion is optional.

  • awesome tutorial video! remarkably established

  • So let's see, if I take a Silver General all the way to the far end in the enemy camp, do I have to promote, or is it optional, since a unpromoted silver general can still move back?

  • Thanks a bunch Hidetchi sensei! I had doubts about the promotions ^^.

  • i like they way you use those glass beads and these videos are very helpful for people who dont know how to play like me. Shogi is so cool i just love the idea of promotion.

  • I watched Naruto, Shikamaru is good in this game I just thought that it is like the western style chess but it is quite complicated as i thought .. Thanks for the time and effort. Great Job..

  • Complete newcomer to Shogi. Your videos are excellent and your effort much appreciated. Thanks.

  • a ni ga do ko za yi ma s

(I hope you know my Japanese)

  • LOL he was like, "Do you know another piece that cant promote?" I was like .. umm Bishop? And when he said it was the King, as though it was obvious, I felt so dumb ._. lol

  • well it was quite obvious to be honest.

  • Thank you for your lessons, Hidetchi Sensei :D

  • So a piece does not demote, even after being captured and replayed?

  • I was wondering what happened if you put a pawn at the end ever since you said how it moved XD And wow, all the way to Gold, what a lucky pawn. And while I'm commenting, I must say that your tutorial is incredibly clear. Good job

  • Thank you as hell! You did a great job! And your English is much better than mine!

  • Hi! Thanks for another interesting lesson! I'm assuming that nari means promoted, right? But what does tokin mean?

Thanks for your time and patience!

  • Hi, thanks.

    Tokin means "promoted pawn".

  • I thought it meant ''reaches gold''

  • hahaha, i just randomly picked lesson 1. i love Japan, so i got interested. :)

  • When lances and knights are promoted to gold's do they lose their prior abilities? More clearly, can the move as and only as a gold?

  • Right. When it's promoted, it gets the promoted peice's movements and loses their originals.

  • can u promote a dropped piece as soon as it is dropped?

  • Hi,

the answer to your question is covered in lesson #6.

  • mrdirka23, HIDETCHI will be right.

The answer will be that you cannot promote a piece when dropped.

  • i have a question. if you are already in the enemy camp, shouldn't you already be promoted? like when you showed the bishop? and why would the pond not promote? it would be a better piece!

  • If you place a piece within the enemy camp I would assume though I'm just getting familiar with the game.

  • well you can choose not to promote.. but no one should really not promote..

  • with lances and knights, does promotion limit the way they go originally, like can a lance go more than one step forward?

  • Lance and Knight will lose their unique way of moving after promotion. So we sometimes we choose not to promote them.

  • right,thanks

  • yea i saw that, but if we get them to the end of the board then how can we expect to move them again. since a lance, pawn, knight can't move backwards.

  • You are obliged to promote if you move a piece to a position where not promoting would mean it would have no subsequent valid moves. Ie you must promote pawns or lances when moving to the back row, and must promote knights moving to either of the back 2 rows.

These rules also apply to "drops". (See video 6).

  • 超面白い!!ありがとう

  • this is great :) Thanks, very interesting game

  • very interestin game

  • I learned alot, thank you!

  • The captions are not English. Captions in English would be helpful.

  • I'll make English captions some day.

Is my English hard to listen?

  • You English is good. But I need the sound to be louder. It is easier to understand if I can read the captions while I listen to your voice. Who made the captions for lessons 1 and 2?

  • I tried making the captions for lesson#1 myself.

As for lesson#2, one of my viewers from Germany made it and sent it to me. He also made captions for lesson#3 through #5, but I have to do some checking and correction to it before posting it. However, I havn't been able to take time for that...

  • I've really enjoyed your lessons so far. Your voice and accent are quite soothing. Sometimes I put a video on in the background when I draw. it's so nice to finally get a grasp of the game =)

A question though, if I may: Suppose that an opponent captured a promoted piece (IE: Dragon Horse), would he then be able to deploy the piece on his side promoted? Or would it revert back to it's demoted state?

I apologize if this is explained later. Thanks again!

  • Hi.

Of course it's explained later. See lesson #6 for the rules concerning 'capture' and 'drop'.

  • Thank you for this channel!

You are a patient and excellent teacher.

  • Great! 5/5! Can't wait to arrive to the strategies.

  • One question here: Can we promote a piece without moving them?

  • No, you can't. You have to move it anyway.

  • domo arigato gozaimashita!!!

  • Nice Video! Now I know more about Shogi and I can play with my friends in the future!

  • As a casual player of Chess and Shogi type games, I find this series of videos to be most insightful! This is excellent work.

  • WoW!! This is a crazy game! These promotion rules make the game almost imposible to memorize whole games like Chess players do in Western Chess!

This is a fantastic game and I'm going to learn it this coming year along with learning how to read Japanese!

Great videos I didn't know Shogi was so beautiful!

Does anyone know where I can buy so of the abbreviated Shogi pieces?

  • Why the short version of promoted bishop's name is "Uma" (not "Ma") since the longer one is "Ryu-Ma"? Sorry, I don't know Japanese at all and I'm just curious.

I'm happy that you use other pieces now because it's really hard for me to distinguish them from one another when both promoted and unpromoted sides are black.

  • 'Horse' is supposed to be 'Uma' in Japanese. But when its combined with other words, we alter it to 'ma' so as to make it easier to pronouce, like 'Kei-ma' or 'Ryu-ma'.

  • Domo arigato gozaimashita!

  • I am still learning from your lessons.

    Domo arigato godzaimas :))

  • this is a really good guide thanks. the wishing stones are a good idea. you are goood at english

  • Hello. Thanks for your kind comment. Please enjoy the videos!

  • fucking awesome guide thanks

  • This game deserves to be promoted.
