  • How can I get one of those vices?

  • @Ascaidh Stanley makes it.

  • @Ascaidh it's like 50 bucks for a standard vice grip, not to mention you need a table surface to mount it to, and big ole screws

  • How do you select wood for your projects and where do you get the wood?

  • @elvin069

    Hey there;

I get the wood from a lumber mill up North. Use basswood to start, move on the butternut and then to cottonwood bark. You'll go nuts! Search on Ebay for smaller pieces.

  • To all the people that are dissing on this man, I bet you guys cannot even do half of what this man is doing. And just cause he says wack it off, he means to "hit" But you immature dumbasses(excuse my language) think its funny when he says wack off. Its not really that funny. He is trying his best to describe something for you cumcatchers so that you can figure this out without looking like a complete dipshit trying to figure it out yourself. Banjoman, I like your tutorials a lot thank u for it!

  • lol, this guy totally doesn't know what he's doin'

  • @xiaoli26

I am the same I am trying to make a metal version of a Stags heads ring, been trying for about 20 years, onlyt recently got hands on with it as I finally worked out that thinking about it and about the skills I need would not change one iota, until I actually put my nose to the grindstone, or use some elbow grease with the right tools. Duh!

  • this guy sounds like he's gettin' wood for this piece of wood :-D

  • lol "Come on baby!"

  • I want to thank you for putting up these videos. I just started carving a couple of months ago in detail. Last year I had to get myself used to the tools by cutting out the rot from the diamond willow staff I'm making for a friend. I usually work in paint, leather, and beads. Now I'm getting into doing wands for other Wiccans and stuff. I love hand carving even though both of my hands are in pain from injuries. Wood is a lot more accessable than the bronze I used to sculpt in.

  • Use protective gloves. Kevlargloves is best

  • The injuries are previous--like dislocating arm and wrist, etc. Arthritis. I haven't had too bad of scrapes with the chisels and knives so far.

  • very informative thank you

  • Hi there!

Actually I am very suspect of the terms sticky, barkless, and flexible. If you want to carve something, and enjoy the results, I suggst you find some basswood or butternut that has been dried. These are excellent carving woods. You might have to buy some at a hobby store.

Believe me, it is worth the small cost to start correctly.

    Happy Carving!

    chuck

  • @banjoman15 absolutely:) especially basswood for beginners. If the chisels are sharp and edges polished, basswood is almost like the modeling clay of the carving world, even cross-grain. Good call:)

  • Hi there, I'm in high school still and I'm trying to find my artistic nitch. I draw well, but I'm more interested in 3d art and woodcarving's got my attention. I grew up climbing trees up north so I'm fine with hunting wood down in my backyard (full of God-knows-what trees) but I'm not sure about the wood. It's white, sticky, flexible and nearly barkless. Is it worth learning to carve with that or would I be digging myself in a hole?

  • hey i like your vids and i was just wondering what kind of wood would be strong enough yet easy enough for an amateur to carve, you see i've been wanting to make a custom stock for my rifle, what would you suggest?

  • Tough question! really, amatuers probably should not carve a rifle stock to begin with. Start with basswood to learn how to carve, then you can move up to harder woods such as walnut, mahogany for the rifle stock.

A rifle stock is usually a big invstment of money and time for a sculptor, and a rifle owner usually wants a perfect result.

take your time to learn carving before you chop up your valuable guns.

Learn to carve woodspirits and patterns first.

    chuck

  • i guess i should have been more specific, its only an air-rifle so a stock is relatively inexpensive, compared to a rifle, but i was thinking a simple design, but i understand your concern lol, do you have a tutorial on carving something like a grapevine design?

  • whew ! try using basswood or butternut. Easy to carve, looks great. For an air rifle, not a huge risk. You can order these woods from lumber mills, and hobby shops (woodcrafters is a good source.) I do not have that tutorial created yet. Thanks for asking.

    ch

  • @banjoman15 What type of clamp are you using?

  • oh also i need some tool reccomendations (im kinda new to woodcarving) thx.

  • Hi Kid;

Basswood is a white wood that is easier to carve than most. Very popular among carvers.

I recommend buying the best you can afford. remember, you'll only buy these ONCE. Flexcut, Pheil are two I really like. there are others, of course.

Look up Basswood on the internet, lots of pictures there

    chuck

  • hey thx again man but im having a little trouble finding what basswood looks like, could u tell me what or where it can be found??

    tyvm, kid123455

  • hey man im new to carving so can u tell me from ur experience, what wood wuld i use to carve a woodspirit. im attmpting to carve/whittle it into a large staff as a walking stick.

    rply soon plzz thks man

  • Hello 'Kid123455'

Dude! Most carvers find a cool looking tree about 2 inches thick, remove the bark and carve in a design. Let it dry first.

If you want to use a certain type of wood , then basswood is good, as it has a strong grain for such a project, however, finding a piece 5 feet long might be an issue.

    Carve on!

  • hello I'm doing my first carving and I have a problem, I already make the nose, the the bear and the forehead but I have a very big problem to start with the eyebrowns and the eyes do you have a page o email where I send you my work and if you can help me to finish??

  • hello nice work!! what kind of wood I need to use? I try with pine but its a little to hard to carve

  • Hi there!

I used cottonwood bark in this video series. It is perfect for this subject. There are a variety of other woods to carve, and actually, pine is a poor carving wood around these parts anyway! Basswood, butternut, are two more very carveable woods to use.

    Happy carving

    chuck

  • do you use fresh or old cottonwood in your carvings?

  • GREAT question! I prefer to use the fresh bark, but there are restrictions (I understand) in some states that do not allow harvesting this bark fresh off the tree. So, much of the time I am forced to use the older bark from dead trees harvested from the forest. It's not the same, but it is still a great wood to carve.

    Happy carving!

    chuck

  • I was wondering where you acquired that vise (I have thus far been unable to find one like that)

  • Hi there! It's a Stanley Vise clamp. It opens to only about 3 inches? Maybe a bit larger, I am not there right now.

But it is da BOMB !!!! It has really helped me alot with the smaller sculptures.

I have other holding devices as well, and I will be showing these others to you in future videos, as I demonstrate other techniques.

    chuck

  • nice moaning hehe

  • nice clamp

  • ta very much for this video and the ones that go.... ive been looking for this kinda stuff for ages!! really informative )

  • Hi fluffy!

My pleasure to help out. I am working on completing this series soon, stay posted!

    thanks

    ch

  • thanks for the video!

  • Your accent, personality and phrases("comeone baby!") make this so fun and easy to watch. Its not boring or complicated atall!

  • lol i wish you were my carving teacher when i first started out

  • haha WHACK THAT THING OFF! Nice video

  • great video, very informative, great narrative

  • Thank you for uploading this. Honestly, You need to go into much more detail. I picked up a small carving set from a local hobby store. and I've started working, I didn't have any other wood around other than a derby car block. so I started with that. More detail would be much appreciated.

  • Thank you for sharing! This is great!

  • I need help!!!! What kind of wood is best for beginers. Can you do a simple craft, that I can do. Whats best for a small pocket knife. Im going to start this spring. Going into my woods and getting a piece of wood. Thing is I dont know what wood is best for pocket knifes and what sculpture is best??? Im clueless!!!!!

  • nice its just i dont have the gouge thingy

  • Good morning! I have seen MANY wood carvers use just the pocket knife. Of course, the craft got started that way long ago.

Give it a go, and if you find that you enjoy carving, take a class, or try gouges somewhere. You'll dig it, really!

    thanks

    ch

  • jumexcrash ebay is a real gooden for things like that....a wide gouge chisel is what he's useing :)

  • COOOOL THANKS . EDDY (YOBABYBUBBA)

  • Good job Banjo ... Great instruction ..

  • Great video. I am enjoying the series. I haven't carved in years, but I want to get started again soon. I've never carved bark before.
