After reading people's comments about her refusing to eat the whale meat I expected a big to-do, a huge protest. But she seemed really polite about it and not at all like she was offended or wanting to shove some kind of PETA nonsense down anyone's throat.
Such hypocrisy to say it is wrong to eat whales but perfectly fine to eat baby lambs, cows, chickens, etc. She is not thinking at all, just following cultural trends by other stupid people. And to complain the lotus root dish had too little truffles is like saying Mcdonalds doesn't have enough pizza. Utterly absurd.
@armadillo01 As if she is aware of any endangered species listings. People also complain about the Japanese eating dolphins which are not endangered. How do you explain that?
@robotpanda77 Actually, most people know about the status of whales, certainly anyone who was around in the 80s Save the Whales era (or has seen Star Trek IV). People complain about the method that some Japanese fishing communities slaughter dolphins because they pick and choose their battles. Why don't you bring up the seal-clubbing in Canada while you are at it? In all three cases (including whale-fishing), it's a practice that is almost extinct, so it's easier to try to stop it.
@robotpanda77 Please explain your logic? Dolphins are too high on the food chain to be eaten in the quantities that one eats animals that reproduce quickly and eat plants. From a scientific perspective, dolphins play a more important role being alive than dead. You're comparing apples to sesame seeds at this point. A dolphin is superior to a chicken in a thousand of ways. Even a venomous snake out ranks a chicken.
@MrRadaikon Let me put it this way, bull fighting is considered cruel by most Americans. But most of Spain loves it and cherishes it as a cultural tradition. Many Americans would find the force feeding of geese to make foie gras cruel and yet, most French love it and cherish it as a cultural tradition. If this actress was Japanese she would not give a DAMN about eating dolphin or whale. It is not about logical thinking it is just people being brainwashed.
Dreyfus lady is an idiot... truffles isn't even used in Japanese cuisine and she wants more of it in the tempura?? The theme isn't truffles here... it's Lotus Root.
rofl that white chick knows nothing about food every time she sayed ehr opinion only thing she could think is.... it needs more truffles.... if that bitchs wants truffles she can go get a pound of it and shove it up her ass dumb stupid slut refusing to eat food she needs to be eaten i think
because it's whale meat, it's illegal in most all of the united states, plus there's a moral thing behind it, whales are near endangered animals, also sometimes whales are killed very very brutally, starving and beaching them to death on metal boats. (this is very controversal) Delicacy in japan, taboo in America.
Julie was the most beautiful woman in the Kill Bill movies--her admittedly evil character was ruthlessly maimed by the cowardly b**ch played by Uma Thurman; now I know where Julie learned to speak Japanese so well.
I am so glad she made a stance and refused the whale tongue and also blessed it. I'm sure it humbled the already cocky and obnoxious challenger by making his menu seem a bit insensitive, but I'm also glad that Ishii-san also put her 2 cents worth in and put it back into perspective. It's easy to become desensitized to our food, and this i just another example of realizing what you are eating. I do, however, agree with Ms. Dreyfus.
I agree only because it would give Iron chef an advantage :/ even though I always cheer on Iron Chefs, I thought it was a bit of a disadvantage because it was something she hasn't tasted before while everyone else seems to have tasted once before :/ So...yeah,I don't think it's fair to have someone who hasn't had that before as a taster. at least the show wasn't on whale meat xD!
It's actually a rather rude gesture, I felt. When you go into a cooking competition as a judge and accept the duty of tasting dishes, you need to graciously receive what's placed before you.
I am all for the preservation of endangered species, but I am not so presumptious as to endorse or condemn the culinary usage of any animal.
I would say that the presumption would be in valuing a job on a cooking show over a closely-held moral value, even if it's not a value shared by one's peers.
Of course it was awkward at the time, but if a person is willing to give up what they consider important just for the sake of convenience, there's no reason in having the value to begin with.
VampyressKatt - "I am all for the preservation of endangered species, but I am not so presumptious as to endorse or condemn the culinary usage of any animal."

Talk out of both sides of your mouth much? "I'm all for preservation but eat all you want." Sorry - you don't get to have it both ways.
You can't tell a culture not to eat something. You can limit in the spirit of conservation, but to disallow it? Nuh uh. So yes. I believe it IS possible to have it both ways thanks. :)
I agree, I certainly didn't go out & tell someone 2 kill a whale but when it's put in front of me, the deed is already done, no point letting it waste
I think you need to look a little more into things before making those kinds of comments.
It's not impossible for him to lose when he plays around the whole time, and makes 7 dishes instead of concentrating on a few less to really make something unique and that will be good all around
Thanks, Leon. This battle was one of the best, because the main ingredient was so difficult. This is also the only time I recall one of the judges refusing to taste a dish.
sometimes i wonder about the translation. i don't know if sakai would say, "shut up! nobody likes you around here anyways!". kinda childish. nonetheless, good post archo.

It's unsuitable as a judge.
But I think she didn't eat whale tougue is OK.
Because she maybe didn't know there is whale tongue is in one of Kandagawa's dishes before match.
Her choices of her foods is her own right.
And she didn't do any negative comments about Japanese people are eating whale.
That's OK.
That's no problem.
Problem is a few comments that forcing to erasure Japanese culture in HERE.
I want to say to these type of guys "leave us alone about our culture".
